- Godverbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29This is by far one of the best uses of the comment feature on Digg in a very long time.
Thank you. - Easty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I do my best.
- jetpig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27"vlc - remoting tool"
... vlc isn't a remoting tool. it's a media client... possibly the best video player out there. simply cause it has all the codecs installed already, it's simple, fast, and best of all... free (beer, speech, etc.) although the streming tool is awesome. i remember 5 friends of mine and i watched robot chicken over it over a network late one night... we were all at the same point for laughing consistently, and we weren't waking up other people... - goozbach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20@jimv
money making scheme my ear.
I spent over $200 on bandwidth last release so people who don't know from a torrent could get their own copies. There's a lot of work that goes into these releases, not to mention the costs of becoming a non-profit, etc.
Besides, since when did it become taboo to make money off free software? Seems to be doing Red Hat quite well. - tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Was anybody else confused by the title? Why the hell would I want to starve students?
- hwh43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14probably mean vnc.
- shahruz84, on 12/17/2008, -5/+19should put line rider there
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"why wouldn't you?"
Because it's not a challenge? - Novagenesis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You don't exactly need a linux version, considering most linux distributions come with all of the above.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9GAIM -> Win32
Adium -> OSX
Baka. - HomelessJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7As a frequently starving person myself anything that is free, allowing me to spend money on food, is golden.
- Railer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6OK I dugg it, and I agree with the idea but I request they change their motto. It should be Home of Software for EVERYONE.
Starving Students implies these programs are used if you have no other choice, meaning if you had money you would of course use much better products on the market. It's simply is not true, and leaves a bad impression.
Each of the programs on this CD are solid working programs in their own right. I would remove the starving and change it to the "Home of Software for Open Minded Students.
It's CD is filled with great software PERIOD. Regardless of price. - libelvox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Nice job guys! Sometimes the hardest part of free software is FINDING it. You've taken all the legwork out of running an open source/freeware box. :)
- dickeytk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7yeah i thought it was VNC, i get em' mixed up, sorry guys
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5[THIRD PROGRAM] is better than both of [PROGRAM] and [ALTERNATIVE PROGRAM].
- jarek91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@larsra:
I prefer AVG, too...I only mention Avast because their 64-bit version is free while AVG's is not. Given the choice, though, I'd say Grisoft has the better product. - larsra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I prefer AVG on the freeware side. I'll ask permission to include it for the next release.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I sometimes forget I have VLC but always remember it when nothing else can open an image or movie file. VLC has never failed to open a movie file that I can recall. Which is really pretty impressive considering I installed it a long time ago and never updated it.
- jaderobbins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You know there are alot more things that go into ***** like this than just giving it out. Bandwidth/programming the cd installation program do cost time and money. Also, he isn't CHARGING he is asking for donations, not charging you. I could ask for donations per digg comment and that doesn't make anything wrong and does not force people to give me money for something they feel is of value.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3COOL! Considering that there are better programs out there then McAfee, if for no other reason that there is no horrible popups that remind me that my subscription ended 7 months ago, i dont really care.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@dickeytk
Supertux is a Mario clone with Tux as the main character. - redDEADresolve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What most people don't realize that @$$hats on the net prey on people who hear about application X and run over to Yahoo/Google search to download it. They don't download from the creators website or a trusted source. They download from someone who asks for info or installs over stuff on their pc for the download.
One safe disc for people to copy, share, download is a great idea. - mrmcbastard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can digg on free stuff!
- CaptainLando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the package assumes that the student will use the games for some ''down'' time.
I am a student and I find taking breaks to do something enjoyable while I'm studying (or working) increases productivity so long as I make myself return to work.
For example this past semester I played one chapter of Max Payne every night on my study break (yes I know that's an old game but I never finished it).
For me the key to a software package like this is to pick out programs that could potentially increase productivity and utilize them fully--(not halfassed). The mac games will be nice for this coming semester. - ricree, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Perhaps the better question is why wouldn't you?
- kabifff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't understand why people are so hostile towards this collection... The author clearly isn't looking for profit. He simply wants people to donate if they see this as a worthy cause. I can think of many people who would find this useful who wouldn't know how to find it unless it came in an easy to use, consolidated bundle like this one. I don't see any harm in that, and it's not as though he's "selling" the software. I'd donate just to support the bandwidth.
- jaderobbins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2also the opportunity cost of spending time trying to find free software is neutralized with this compilation!
- mattcampbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One Word: Seed!
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like this packaging (along with "theOpenCd") but not for myself, since I already know about all these, but I keep one handy for other students. Mainly ones who ask me to pirate MS Office or the like. In any case, instead of telling them to "go download it, its free, etc." I give them the CD and say, check there first.
- MilesLombardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think it's the kind of thing that's useful if you're setting up a new computer. Install windows, pop this disk in and you've got pretty much everything you need to run a workstation.
- abid786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2but mp3 playing doesnt
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Might be worth including Quake shareware wad and a newer Client.
Theres also FreeDoom which is a WAD designed to replace the full doom wads (can't vouch for its completeness or quality) and ofcourse shareware versions again.
Actually theres a FreeQuake but it is just the shareware with client not an actual wad. (Actually i think its just the website linking to them)
Quake1 shareware with client is < 10Mb and I'm sure the license allows for redistribution (hence the SHAREware)
I'm sure there are a few other older demos with newer clients around too. - Feanor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What list were you looking at?
- kd5ftn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone have a mirror of the .torrent file? I can't even open the OS X torrent file now..
- nthdork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thanks for the list dickeytk
took me a while but i got all that info formatted for burning to a lightscribe cd.
going to burn a few copies to give out since it's a good compilation of software titles. if anyone needs the file let me know and i can email it out. i used nero and it saved it as a .ncd file - sism3477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They can afford to give it to you free when your paying 20,000 a year for tuition.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, but hopefully its upped the torrent speed.
- rancidpony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice well thought out collection of apps.
Suggestion: Add links to the various apps websites. Many people will actually prefer to go to the main website to download it themselves. Also add some short descriptions of what the apps are (One of the above posts did a decent job). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I prefer Active Virus Shield with the Kaspersky engine. It has detected things that both AVG and Avast missed. Oh and it is free (as in beer).
- TehMasterer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why are there so many games on this thing i mean the rest of the apps are great but who needs BZFlag?
- SierraAlpha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very cool but digg has just wrecked the direct download speeds. Either way I can't wait for it to finish downloading.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I need food. not a list of bunch of programs
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Being a starving film student myself, I can highly endorse this disc...
- rocket000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know but digg needs to add that feature and have the number of diggs update in real time.
