Witch - larsra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I took the wiki offline temporarily because our server couldn't handle the traffic. Feel free to join the mailing lists. What a _wonderful_ problem to have to have! --Lars
- rkm28, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This CD is beautifully packaged -- great graphic design and awesome variety of useful software.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4BitTorrent files:
OS X: http://mirror.softwarefor.org/downloads/SSS_osx_2006.01.dmg.torrent
Windows: http://mirror.softwarefor.org/downloads/SSS_win_2006.01.iso.torrent - vernsan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm downloading it right now. Looks very useful, I've got alot of friends always short on cash and they never want anything to deal with pirating. I've given them Open Office they love it because it can do pretty much everything as regular Microsoft Office can. Plus some of the other programs on it are nice also. Not everyone like to get illegal software.
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is awesome. I run a workshop durring the semesters regarding FOSS programs like GIMP, Firefox and OOo, but this is amazing. I'll have to check it out and see if I can do anything with it for my workshop.
Great digg! - herlo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because they will also be giving these away as CDs on school campuses around the world. At least that's the plan!
- goozbach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://mirror.neverblock.com/community/SSS/ (my mirror) needs some help. If you're interested please contact mirror@neverblock.com If I don't get some help soon I'm going to have to stop offering full http downloads. Thanks.
- Jeral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These people are awesome... and now you too can control Tux the Linux mascot!
- INMCM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not all the software on this disk is OSS (Deep Burner Free for example).
- RetroActive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2got the page to load and found these direct html download links for those who dont use torrents.......
OS X: http://mirror.neverblock.com/community/SSS/isos/SSS_osx_2006.01.dmg
Windows: http://mirror.neverblock.com/community/SSS/isos/SSS_win_2006.01.iso - wthulhu, on 08/29/2009, -0/+2"If you can afford a computer, you can afford to buy software.
If you can't afford a computer then buy a typewriter instead (no software required)."
This doesn't even make sense. Many students have recieved thier boxes as gifts, I know several. Besides that a computer can be purchased for less than $400 while Photoshop, Microsoft Office, various anti-virus and internet security programs and utilities would EASILY add up to more than that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks useful... thanx
- hardwarehank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+294+88+174 = 356...
$356 would pay for a class for a college student. - jjpictures, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very good stuff, put all this on my laptop. Dugg
- Phredegast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Software isn't that expensive anymore."
True: FreeBSD costs only a single ISO download and an FTP install, and there are thousands of programs in the ports tree for just a compile.
When I'm on my Mac, though, it's great to have a nice compilation of available, free, legal software I can use in OS X. This CD provides that, and along the way I found out about several applications I'd never heard of or considered before. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is a great collection
double digg!! - denied, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3but...if they already have bittorrent, why would they need free software?
:P - RetroActive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1too bad all they have is a torrent link.
- louiem3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great! I'll be uploading the .ISO on to my server if anyone is interested.
- straylightrise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sweet
- louiem3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's the URL to download the ISO for the Windows version. If someone needs the OS X version, contact me. Thanks.

- Colin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ yes, on the web site there is, but it seems to not be responding just now.
- superfly210, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they just removed the direct download links! i was 70% done too! :-(
- modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Downloading it now.

however it doesn't seem to be up ATM, probably a digg effect. - JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"is there a comprehensive list of what software is available?"
Wondering this myself. I couldn't find a list of what's on there, and don't want to download the iso just to find out. Good idea however. - boicraig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg just for the comment by "theRed" of "*****" :)
- Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is there a comprehensive list of what software is available?

Why on earth aren't you using bittorrent? There's tons of seeders, and you won't be eating all the bandwidth of the people who were nice enough to create this collection in the first place. - wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is this just OO.o and Firefox? why do we need a separate program and installer for this?
just list what in it and let people get what they need - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Plugitin, I think you may have misunderstood Lars' message. We're actually grateful to have more traffic than our wiki server can handle. Our goal is to have our CDs distributed as widely as possible, so while an overwhelmed server is a problem, it's just the kind of problem we'd like to have. To us it's a wonderful problem. I apologize if it seemed ungrateful -- that was not the intent.
- goozbach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
they just removed the direct download links! i was 70% done too! :-(
Sorry, I'm gonna end up paying out my ear as it is. Ask around for people to help mirror.
Bandwidth is expensive.
New mirror forthcomming. - Nesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^bangs head on keyboard for not using spell check
- Nesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm getting great speads on the windows torrent (600+ k/s). I'll be seeding until I need the up bandwidth again (at least until tomorrow night). Thanks lars and mcshazbot for putting this all together for an easy download.
- FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is what Bittorrent was made for, you ungrateful slobs.
- wthulhu, on 08/29/2009, -2/+1"Yeah, if you're too broke to buy the software ... might as well steal it. The companies won't be losing any money anyways."
Sure, but need I remind you there are still legal and moral issues at play here? Some people prefer not to pirate music, software, or movies. No matter what the reasoning. Some people may prefer to use an open source alternative rather than risk jail time or lawsuits. If there is a decent and comparable free alternative, why not use it?
Need I also remind you that it isn't alwasy safe to download pirated programs. I happened to have downloaded a version of Maya, only to find that it had an infected plugin. - robbie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There's a reason ethical and legal are two different words.
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Software isn't that expensive anymore.
Windows XP home $94
Photoshop elements 4 $88
Microsoft office basic $174
These are not academic prices - it's the full price that any joe on the street can pay. You probably don't need the full professional versions if you don't already know that you need them :P - Historian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Students at Indiana University can get both XP Pro and XP Pro x64 Edition for $5. Gotta love it.
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Obviously a "starving student" will just pirate anyways, i mean does anyone actually own a real copy of windows XP or photoshop??
But i would definetly check this out as a "best of OSS" compilation, i'm sure there are a million programs that would make things easier for me, or provide an alternative to the big names. Good work on the disc "OSS guys" its a great idea. - theRed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1*****
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0"Need I also remind you that it isn't alwasy safe to download pirated programs. I happened to have downloaded a version of Maya, only to find that it had an infected plugin."
Only because you're a dumbass. The technically skilled can obtain nearly anything online at extremely high quality with no reprocussions. - JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Yeah, if you're too broke to buy the software ... might as well steal it. The companies won't be losing any money anyways.
