- ProfMoriarty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Make your friends follow you to Gizmo.
- macman81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Get Gizmo. It's better :-)
- kenkanif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i too am going to stick with good 'ol Skype.
- iamsojelin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was listening to the latest Engadget podcast, and they were using Gizmo, but there were so many harsh sound artifacts that I only listened to about 5 minutes of it. TWiT uses Skype a lot of the time, and while there are still some noticeable audio mishaps, it's by far a lot easier to listen to.
- surffoxy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0If Gizmo changes it's name it will be a fatal error. Skype is the one that needs a name change, it sounds like a skin disease. The Gizmo name is part of the reason I use it instead of skype.
- nerdtek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Speaking of VOIP software if anyone has used either one of these programs, especially if you've used them to create podcasts, I would be very interested in your feedback, check out my digg article, and attach a comment.

- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's hoping Gizmo will name itself something cool.
Ubuntu and Mandrivia are not cool. - pete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wrote up my thoughts on skype vs gizmo here: http://www.petefreitag.com/item/522.cfm
- pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just for the record...the "guy who made Kazaa" didn't put all of the spyware in it, that was Sharman Networks who purchased Kazaa from Scandinavian programmers Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. It's these guys, or maybe just Niklas who created Skype...not Sharman Networks.
A lot of people here are saying to use Gizmo. I have not used it, but I've heard from those that have, the sound quality is lacking quite a bit. Anyone here have comparative experience with Gizmo and Skype? - whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am wondering why Gizmo is better...first off, it does not appear to be GPL or FSF free (tie). Second, it does not mention that it uses encryption (Skype clearly wins). Can anyone explain to me how the audio quality/latency compares w/ Skype? Otherwise, I am sticking with Skype.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gizmo is nicer looking tho I put my trust in skype which has all the bugs worked out of it
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Skype is awesome. I love it
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We use Ventrilo for podcasting, $10/month for 50 person server, and high quaility audio codec sounds a lot better than Skype. The only problem is that you have people who don't know how to set it up, or have ***** sound cards. But for the most part, we can usually guide people through the setup of it through AIM.
- mdramige, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The current encryption situation is like this:
* SIP messages are plain text. This is non-sensitive data like your IP address and what number you are calling.
* The actual voice conversation is currently unencrypted. We intend to encrypt the voice data, when Gizmo Project releases a production release (and leaves Beta)
* All profile data, passwords, security images, etc, are currently encrypted with HTTPS/SSL - mrblogadise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a bunch of these voip services now like Wavigo for example. http://www.wavigo.com
- whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks for the info mdramige! i will stick with skype since a) it's not beta and b) the contents of communications are fully encrypted (even if the routes/who is involved is not). but competition fuels innovation and drives the market, so i look forward to a finished gizmo.
- richhand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One of the complaints was that you can't have your own avatar. Did not seem to be a problem for me. I re-sized my Skype avatar to 64 x 64 (jpg) and placed it in C:Program FilesGizmo Projectavatars. Went to the profile and selected the new image. I didn't find any other funky things, well except not everyone I wanted to talk to has come over to Gizmo... soon!
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, actually, Skype has a couple of their services in beta, so that statement isn't exactly accurate.
- rjnsmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This exact artical was here yesterday too... or it was the day before... i dont get it... it may be a glich in digg??
- DnH500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I sticking with skype until my friends move to gizmo
- LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Get Gizmo, not because it's better but because the guy who made skype made Kazaa. Kazaa would be ok..but there is just tooo much spyware.
- mwheeler1982, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why has this been dugg so much, this is OLLDDDDD news
- rjnsmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How did this get to the front page... wasent this on the front page yesterday??? or the day before???
