- Skyfire, on 01/29/2008, -0/+93Aw man, I didn't even know there was a Skyfire browser. They so freakin' copied my name.
- skyfire1, on 01/29/2008, -0/+58You're the reason I had to pick 'skyfire1'.
- skyshock1, on 01/29/2008, -1/+44They were going to be named Skyshock, but I told them to kiss my ass.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -1/+34Good thing they didn't name it Stormwysper. That's such a faggy sounding name.
- inactive, on 01/28/2008, -2/+25And I am still sitting here staring at a blue Lego brick my iPhone gives me instead of a flash animation/video...
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -2/+22What kind of idiots does engadget have writing for them?
"Sounds too good to be true? It is, and you don't have to just take our word for it, follow the read link to get signed up for the beta, this is something that just cannot be missed."
That means that it is not true. - 1jaxstate1, on 01/28/2008, -2/+22So I read this, then go to engadget and read the full article, bounce over to skyfire's site to download the app. I then fill a quick beta tester form only to have "Coming Soon" pop up after I finished.
- bowe, on 01/29/2008, -1/+18Michael Bolton: Yeah, well at least your name isn't Michael Bolton.
Samir: You know there's nothing wrong with that name.
Michael Bolton: There was nothing wrong with it... until I was about 12 years old and that no-talent ass clown became famous and started winning Grammys.
Samir: Hmm... well why don't you just go by Mike instead of Michael?
Michael Bolton: No way. Why should I change? He's the one who sucks. - DietMountainDew, on 01/28/2008, -4/+16Very cool, but if you can't wait to get a beta invite, check out Opera Mini:
http://www.operamini.com
Doesn't do flash, but it is tons better than IE Mobile. - cmajewski, on 01/28/2008, -6/+14Finally - PIE is such a joke, and well Opera isn't even close to this, or even free for that matter...
- Error601, on 01/28/2008, -2/+9Of course "service side magic" means you will have to buy a subscription from them and they'll have a record of everything you browse. They can't do the content crunching if it's using SSL to the source site.
- zakatov, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7What are they smoking? "This is the first time Google Maps could be run on a mobile device?" Hello and welcome to at least 12 months ago. And I bet half that ***** was cached anyways
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -2/+9Really...the joke is over. Move on.
- hurtmetomysoul, on 01/28/2008, -3/+10soooo
who's got mah beta code? - eatasandwich, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7For all you know, this new browser could teleport me to the moon. How about you wait until the thing is released before blurting your irrelevant non-smartphone related iPhone propaganda.
- livejamie, on 01/29/2008, -2/+8yeah and then they were going to use livejamie and.... yeah nevermind
- DiggaDave, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Opera mini is free and probably the best browser you can use right now. Can't wait till i get the invite for skyfire.
- namuh, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Total fake, you tube ran smoothly on the TILT! (Not fake but..) Video playback on the tilt is total ass right now though due to poor display driver support from HTC. I know, I own the tilt. Yes I'm upset with HTC. Please check XDA developers site in order to sign the petition!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3 ... - balla786, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Someone on the engadget site noticed this in their "disclaimer":
From their Privacy Policy:
"Once you have subscribed to and begin to use the Browser, we will collect information about your use of the Browser on your Device (“Browser Usage Information”). Browser Usage Information includes such information as which websites and programs you access or download on your Device, how long you visit such websites and use such programs, your activities (such as products purchased or advertisements viewed) on such websites, which specific areas of a website or webpage you use and for how long, websites you bookmark, search terms you use, referring/exit pages, browser and platform types, the geographic location in which your Device is being used and information you provide on third party websites. All of your Browser Usage Information is stored by Skyfire under an automatically generated, random identification number (“ID Number”) that will not be associated with or linked to your Personal Information. Please be aware, though, that your Browser Usage Information, when viewed in the aggregate, may reveal your identity even if it is not associated with or linked to your Personal Information." - fkr3, on 01/28/2008, -1/+6It is, but I wonder if it's sustainable. It's essentially a proxy which means every page and file anyone views = a 2x bandwidth hit for Skyfire. Free is all good and fine but that's going to cost them an arm and a leg, while their revenue streams seem limited to branded-versions and advertising within the program (presumably ala Opera way back when).
The actual url:
http://www.skyfire.com/ - rfquinn, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5Everyone using Windows Mobile should check out Picsel Browser. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good.
- fkr3, on 01/29/2008, -1/+6Ok. Imagine you're using Skyfire and you decide to watch a 12 megabyte youtube video.
This is what is really happening:
YouTube -> Skyfire -> You
When you do it through a 'normal' browser this is what happens:
YouTube -> You
That 12 meg video ends up costing Skyfire 24 meg of bandwidth because first they download it from youtube then they send it to you, and that's for every page and file being requested through their browser. - DBXMe2, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4As soon as someone has a download link for this beta, please post it, I'm in Canada, and this ***** is only available in the US. Thanks.
- Donatom3, on 01/28/2008, -2/+6I defintely agree. PIE is a joke and soooo slow. Opera is alright, but $30 for it and it doesn't do what this does.
- emehrkay, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4What rendering engine does it use? I'm hoping webkit or gekko and not IE's
- jnorris441, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4But today is opposite day.
- etx313, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3Awesome!!! I can't even use opera mobile on my HTC Touch, it doesn't work right.
- Demens, on 01/28/2008, -3/+6Brighthand has a pretty good demonstration video of Skyfire in action.
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPLV7fzyr5M
Article: http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13761 - buddyw, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3The problem with FI is the high compression ratio means you have to use high octane fuel.
- mooninite, on 01/29/2008, -2/+5Nokia has already released a firmware update that adds Flash Lite 3.0 integrated to their handsets browser. You can browse any site (including You Tube) at their full, main website and view Flash videos just like on your PC.
Windows Mobile is just getting to a "beta" of the same functionality? Sad. - fkr3, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3"Sure, there are ways to get Youtube and other mobile video content through proxy sites that convert on the go or with other 3rd-party applications, but this puppy does it all in one sweet and free package."
Engadget
Also the website suggests they process everything you request to format it / resize accordingly etc. - LumpOfCole, on 01/29/2008, -1/+4It's good to see Opera getting some true competition on the mobile browser space, where IE barely even counts for people who know better.
- cleverboy, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Yeah, it their choice... But I have a hard time understanding a sustainable business model with substantial cost, both developmental and ongoing service related... and a free product. Moreover... That stuff doesn't happen instantly like the video implies. I'd like to see a less fabricated video at some point. Let's see some things I don't like but wouldn't mind compromising.
- timlopez, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Real good potential there - Can't wait to try it out when the beta testing begins!
To everyone who tests it: send bug reports in!! It'll help make the software awesome when they release it! - RobotBuddha, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Kind of a pain to run on windows mobile though. It works, but a bit buggy on mine at least with IBM's VM.
- allisonmd, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Actually I don't think you will.
- lovekudu, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Where did you hear this was a proxy?
The article makes it sound like a portable browser with a decent rendering engine, like Opera, Nokia browser, or Safari. - MindTrigger, on 01/29/2008, -1/+3You are correct. +1
- juniorb, on 01/29/2008, -1/+3I laughed in an out loud way.
- mjfarina, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2I wish Microsoft would release that Deepfish browser for windows mobile. Anything is better than the IE version that ships with it.
- lengau, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Inaccurate. I've been watching Flash, using Google Maps, etc. on my mobile device for ages without any need for a proxy.
- Aitese, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Not sure if it's implemented yet but I saw a picture where that had been done...it might even fullscreen when the fullscreen button is pressed on Youtube.
- kyleandstan, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1That's right balla786! The price of that nifty browser (those pages were seriously cached by the way) is a neural shunt connected directly to skyfire.com's database. I wouldn't even give those guys my email address, let alone my phone number and every detail about every single thing I do on my pda. However, since you were like only the 2nd person to actually read that disclaimer, makes me think they will soon have thousands jacked into their matrix.
- osko2052, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1What about BlackBerry?
- enigmaneo, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Opera Mini 4.0 is light years ahead of Opera Mobile 3.65 and is free. Opera Mobile 9 will be coming out soon though. Opera Mini works great on my phone.
- WhoDey, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Works fantastically on my HTC Touch... try installing JBed as your Java VM and using that (google it up)
- slash128gnr, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1While it is good that it can do all this the server side conversion means a privacy risk. Since its all through a proxy server that means you cant have a secure connection to a website or a secure feed to the proxy for that matter.
- zakatov, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Is it just me or can you not arbitrarily zoom in there? it's either all (tiny as heck) or a pre-defined zoom rectangle? For example, he wasn't able to zoom in on that flash video so it would take up the whole screen.
- h2d2, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Okay, for those who can't wait for the beta, try this:
Opera Mini http://mini.opera.com/
For all your browsing needs
Vtap http://www.vtap.com/
For all your video (Youtube) viewing needs
Both are free and available right now. - etx313, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Car nerd! FI is the way to be. C'mon it's only an extra $2 a tank for a little turbonium action!
