Share Huge Files Online with Gigasize (1.5 GB/FILE!)
gigasize.com — Gigasize is new on the block, but compared to sites like Rapidshare and Megaupload, it is light years ahead. Without signing up, you can host files up to 1 gigabyte, or sign up to host huge 1.5 gigabyte files. Could sites like this kill P2P networks?
- 2649 diggs
- digg it
- thetaco82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25I just uploaded a test file (free, unregistered) and am downloading it at around 250KB/s. I see mention of a daily download limit, but I can't find any specific details. Does anyone have more information?
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50On http://www.gigasize.com/page.php?p=how_it_works, it says:
"There is currently no limit on downloads! We love it when our accountant tells us that bandwidth charges are through the roof. In fact we love it so much that we give GigaPoints to users for every download of their files. We like to reward every user who plays a role in making GigaSize a success." - thetaco82, on 10/12/2007, -28/+15"The Premium Account (Heavy Uploaders)
*Bypass all limitations set on free accounts ! Speed limit, multiple file downloads limit, daily download limit…
*You can also upload bigger files."
How dare this free service have inconsistent information. I want my money back. - scheper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+98I have a suspicion this site will not last long with its current setup.
- x50x50, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27ok! looks like the site is sufferning a digg effect! if they cant handle a diggin why should we trust them with our files?
- MikeJo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Is this bubble storage 2.0 ?
- phbradley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45hopefully it'll spark off a competition war like Gmail did with email. Sites like rapidshare REALLY need to clean up their act
- diggywiggit, on 10/12/2007, -20/+7I have a suspicion that it is a RIAA bait.
- ntl4, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2so how come my uplaod times out?
- DuoPros, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I can't register with my Gmail account - anyone else got this problem?
- rzurad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15or you could stick to good 'ol fashioned p2p.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -20/+5@DuoPros
You dont have an invite yet i thought every one had an invite. email me bobothn at gmail.com and i will send you an invite to join gmail. any one else want an invite email same adress. - touch0ph, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Yeah I'm having trouble registering my Gmail account as well.
- r2d7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Site looks like a generic php upload script to be honest. The filesize and bandwidth will probably last about as long as digg's attention span then it'll quickly become akin to rapidshare.
Same goes for all the other "innovative" copies of the same script that get posted on digg. - DuoPros, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10@bobothn
I'm having trouble registering for gigasize *with* my gmail account.
I already have one, but thanks for the kind gesture :-). - msj5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5is it me or is this just a parking page?
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"Could sites like this kill P2P networks?"
No. We had sites like this before, in the late nineties. Then they started getting takedown notices. That's why we *moved* to P2P -- decentralization made it a hell of a lot harder for the **AA to get at us. - christina1982, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems decent I uploaded a 640 Meg file.
- tom6a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It looks like they were still in alpha phase...see this post:

Nice, now i can download file at work.

- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Filefront is also incredibly slow.
- toppgun, on 10/12/2007, -25/+26not always. last night, at around 10:00pm i was getting around 800kbps on a 75mb file
- toppgun, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22why was i dugg down for stating a fact?
- jtjdt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28People don't like the speeds you were getting. :-)
- ChrisGilliard, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4@toppgun
For whining about being dug down. - Shadar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"why was i dugg down for stating a fact?"
The first rule of digg is to never mention being dugg.
- ollyx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20look good, although I seriously doubt that it will kill p2p... nothing can kill real community spirit right?
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Actually, P2P killed sites like this!
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Pfft! RARhost already offers unlimited filesize hosting. Search for it on Digg as it's already been submitted.
- basselope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Rarhost only unlimited in the respect that you can upload as many 200mb files as you like.
Still a good service.
- basselope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Rarhost only unlimited in the respect that you can upload as many 200mb files as you like.
- sh0elace, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Wow, I doubt it'll kill P2P networks but hey, not too bad.
- x50x50, on 10/12/2007, -16/+11uploads time out when i tried to upload anything larger than 20mb! seems to me like a publicity stunt! http is to unreliable for large uploads
i recommend using more reliable sites like http://mihd.net/
they provide 2GB uploads (over http and ftp!) for premium members and 51MB to free users, with no download limits like rapidshare or blocking ips like megauplaod
also downloads are resumable!
on the other hand the interface could be better- bimboo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8well thanks for that! http://mihd.net/ is still ip
while gigasize has

- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2It's not down because it's a link halfway down the comments in a comment that's been modded down, Good luck to it if it were to ever be front page on digg.

- Moeface, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I don't think I'll use this, I'll stick with P2P. I mean, who _doesn't_ want to spend time sifting through hundreds of badly labeled, corrupt, bad quality music!?
- Jaybob404, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18music + torrents + organization freak = me spending my friday night labelling music instead of dating :(

Too bad all those poor girls are missing out on the Love Doctor cause you haven't managed to make time around renaming your Kazaa downloads.
Hehe. - damentz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1eMule? its basically bittorrent except slower, but instead of finding tracker sites, its all done through connecting to a serv or a decentralized network like gnutella for instance. Even though it is slow, you WILL get the file, no matter how long it takes to download, as long as someone has peices to the file you are getting.
http://emule-project.net
noting this since there are like 10 fake sites, this is the real one

lol
- SpeckledJim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Guess it'll do OK until their VC money runs out and they have to find a new way to pay those bandwidth bills.
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17they hope to have a large user base by then to justify high pricing for ad space... at which point the service will go to sh!t and a new site will come out touting free this and that for people to flock to, thus completing the circle of life.
- sneeka2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10And I was just looking for a site like this! No, really! Need to put a hi-def video online, so YouTube or Google are out...
Digg is... scary... sometimes. - Egotrippin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14I digg it. Easy to register and $5 a month for the premium package is not that bad.
- soccerboi00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Are you guys digging him down because he said the premium price or something?
- soopah256, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8haha, seems to be down already.
for a site that's suppose to host huge files, it's not very reliable.- bimboo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2yea u right it is down
- deltaphi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3how would that kill p2p?
if one uploads a file, it has to be slower than, for eaample torrent.
and you have only 1 gb free. not that much for filesharing - d892, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2down, damn it sounded too good to be true!
- rkcrawf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3i agree that http sucks for huge file uploads, but i blame the browser. does firefox have an upload extension??
also, before you slam gigasize for reliability, note that they are in alpha...- mihd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5yea typical web2.0, if you dont have a greek character in your name ur not cool enough!
- gigasizeadmin, on 10/12/2007, -15/+11hi our site is not down (but we are taking a heavy diggin), we really do offer 1.5GB and our bandwidth is cogent (doesnt mean its slow tho)
digg this thread up please!- mv36, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3You use Cognet which means a reliable provider.
We have confidence in your site as of yet ...... though how you will support bandwidth is another question. - MysteryFCM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to run a small free file host and can guarantee you, unless your planning on some major ways to support it financially, aswell as being able to moderate the files on your server (it's you that will get sued if they're illegal ;o)), your service won't last long (mine only lasted a couple year or so before I had to take it down).
- mv36, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3You use Cognet which means a reliable provider.
- inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This site will be dead the minute somebody will start releasing Xvids movies on it. How can a site like this survive from the RIAA
- gigasizeadmin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5all illegal files will be deleted and added to our patented filter technology
- jaxxstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5rapidshare is probably number one for online hosted content right now, and all they do is remove links once there is a complaint. Its perfectly legitimate for someone to upload a file for family members or friends to download, as someone earlier mentioned about sending a zip file with pictures to family members.
They can easily survive the RIAA, they just adhere to the rules - afex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"all illegal files will be deleted and added to our patented filter technology"
something about me doubts that someone who uses the words 'u' and 'tho' (in later comments) got a patent on a filtering algorithm... - striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He means in his notepad file of bad URLs... poor reseller...
- gd007, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2does it come with a upload booster?

when I click on that button It ask me to register ....
" Register for a free account"
At the top of the page. - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Business plan for uploading business:
1. Have cavalier attitude towards "other" sites.
2. brag about being free
3. Have stupidly large file limits to attract crowd.
4. Burn through original venture capital.
5. Seek out new investors
6. Capitulate on your site's original goals.
7. Introduce tiered pricing plan
8. Mediocrity and loss of credibility. - retral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Like all new hosting sites, this will worsen over the next few days/weeks while it gets used more.

- sav2880, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just got the same message, tried to register a couple of different ways. We'll see how good the service is once the digg effect wears off.
- JoeyDeacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Doesn't accept Gmail addresses. No way I'm giving this site any other address.
- bryhhh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Have you tried a spambob address? (http://www.spambob.com/) I was about to try it myself, but there is now a 'Parking page' instead of the gigasize site.
- zerodotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just tried to register using my hotmail, then my yahoo, then my gmail address. The site said "your email does not seem to be a valid email" for all of them.
- bart5986, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7what on earth can you legally put on here thats 1.5gb?
I think that like most other uploading services they will just claim they don't allow illegal files when they really know its how they get popular.
All of them do it... except filefront.- jslice, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5a giant photoshop file for a graphic designer...
- WillyMF1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4an encrypted backup of my photos could be easily broken into 1.5gb parts and uploaded for storage.

I have to assume that anyone asking what 1.5gb of space could be used for legally is not out of their teens yet and lives/breaths/sleeps warez.

Question:
is there a hosting site that allows hotlinking? and has decent bandwidth?
i'd like a place to host some bootleg videos that would allow me to stream them via an embedded player on my website.
i've tried many sites. some work for a while then the bandwidth stops supporting the way i want to use it.

the beauty of p2p network is the hive sharing of files and not be reliant on a server or specific host to grab a file. Plus 1.5GB is nothing to the more advanced p2p networks. - bdmbdm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hello piracy.

- SpamHater, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Well of COURSE someone has to make it easier to share massive files.
How else will the "Fair Use" nut jobs trade the "Backups" of their PlayStation DVDs? - Bloodwine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How do these companies offer so much diskspace? Maybe they play the ISP dial-up game and bet on not everybody using 1.0-1.5gb of space so they overcommit on diskspace in hopes that most people really don't use 1.0-1.5gb of space.
Still, server-grade disks aren't exactly el-cheapo, so this has to cost a lot of money infrastructure-wise. Makes no sense that they give so much away for free. Seriously, 1.0gb would be enough for most people and there is little incentive to pay up for an extra 500mb.- JSolo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You assume they are using something high end, when they could be using cheap-o ATA disks of some kind.
- bobbygeorgina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I normally just use yousendit.com...it is easy to remember, especially if you're giving the URL to someone else (as it is easy for them to remember (and spell)).
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It cant kill P2P networks, all the RIAA has to do is attack this one site with there team of lawyers, and it is down. With a P2P network, the have to attack all the trackers, and try to take them all down, witch is impossible.
- usefulidiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ack this site has web 2.0 written all over it
- goredsox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3When are sites like this, YouSendIt, or apps like Pando going to realize that while it might be cool to share files for free while they pay for all storage and bandwidth costs, its an absolutely inane business idea and its destined for failure. It's like 1999 all over again!!! Where's your business model?
- JSolo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is indeed a business model via ads, paid access and/or bizdev deals. The idea though is to keep the company lean, the bandwidth cheap and the hardware plain old off the shelf whitebox stuff (no reason to go with san and Hitachi/EMC arrays for files that are not mission critical to a company).
Storage is cheap these days (go price out 250gb p/s/ata disks), the bandwidth they are getting is cheap (Cogent can be very price competitive depending on your commit) and theoretically, anyone can pay 35$ for their own premade PHP YouSendIt.com clone (my fave file sending site for sooo many reasons).
They could skip out on buying their own hardware and go with a CDN like Cachefly, Limelight or Akamai, but unfortunately as the site gets bigger, the monthly recurring costs don't scale very well versus having your own ops staff and hardware.
