- feacesface, on 08/11/2008, -1/+36This will tip the edit war with SnotRag22227 over the proper indexing of He-Man_Trading_Cards (1983 Re-Issue) in my favor.
- Graphixcon, on 08/10/2008, -2/+36well these are quite good but google does provide efficient way to search for wikipedia... any ways nice for sharing
- fafnir314, on 08/11/2008, -1/+30Thank God they've made a search engine for Wikipedia! I would've just died if I'd had to use Google or, even worse, Wikipedia's own search bar for one more day.
- Llanowar, on 08/11/2008, -0/+23The worst title probably goes to Digg.
- jwolcott, on 08/11/2008, -0/+20Yeah, how about just entering 'wiki [search term]' (no quotes) in the FF URL field? Can't beat that for speed and effectiveness.
Try it now, enter 'wiki genital herpes' - bumcheekcity, on 08/11/2008, -0/+18Oh for ***** sake, just type what you want to search for, and then "wiki" into google like everyone else.
- frontporsche, on 08/11/2008, -1/+15So, what's a "pro" wikipedia searcher? The person at the library help desk, perhaps?
- jgatz, on 08/11/2008, -0/+14great tips
I have been using this method to edit obscure articles to make my political beliefs appear more widespread - thepinkc, on 08/10/2008, -4/+17Good tips. I wasn't aware of any of these search engines!

- stephenmeb, on 08/11/2008, -3/+12Wikipedia has one of the worst, if not the worst search engine ever!
- libertao, on 08/11/2008, -1/+8Better solution:
Bookmark this: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Aen.wik ...
Then right-click on the bookmark-->properties, add a keyword like 'wp' and then just type "wp [search term]" in the FF address bar. - abajaj2280, on 08/11/2008, -1/+7Dugg for the mobile Wikipedia
- shutaro, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5Hmm... Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
- ExRe, on 08/11/2008, -1/+6Who the hell would go to the library to look up information?
With Wikipedia you can get all the info you need on one page that takes 5 seconds to find. In the library you could spend days gathering it all only to find outdated information. - omgsideburns, on 08/11/2008, -1/+6Google.
- shagmin, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4I think he knew what the article meant. But he was asking who spends so much time searching things on Wikipedia that Wikipedia's own search engine and Google don't meet their needs.
- tiuk, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4I always use Google to search wikipedia because its default search engine is so horrible. Many is the time I've been off by one letter and got absolutely no search results.
- Soave, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4My solution, which works really well:
1. In Firefox, make a bookmark of the following URL:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site:en.wikip ...
2. Set the keyword to "w"
Now, you can type "w titanic" to bring up the Wikipedia page for the ship. Since it uses "I'm Feeling Lucky," it will automatically bring up the first page. Meaning, if you want the page about the movie, you can describe it a little more, "w titanic film" to bring it up.
If you don't want the first result, you can always Google "wiki ______" - rotundo, on 08/11/2008, -1/+4Yep: that's the way to hit it. Google (via FF or Safari) your term with the word "wiki" thrown in: much better than the built in Wiki search. You get spelling corrections and all that too. I'm so happy with that that I'm not going to even try the article recommendations. Feel bad for the folks who built all those search engines!
- TVarmy, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3Luckily, if you know exactly what you want, there's usually an article by that name with links within the article to whatever you were thinking about. If there isn't an article, the thing you wanted does not exist in the concrete or abstract sense and you are wasting everyone's time.
- WalkingAway, on 08/11/2008, -2/+5indeed much more useful than google search
- jtwyrrpirate, on 08/11/2008, -1/+4You can also go to Google and search like this:
site:example.com search terms
i.e. I want to find waffles on the English Wikipedia:
site:en.wikipedia.org waffles
It's not as quick as typing search terms into a browser search bar, but it allows you to be very fine-grained and has helped me many times on sites with bad search functions or illogical menus. - mogebier, on 08/11/2008, -2/+5Wikipedia and Accurate in the same sentence???
- borez, on 08/11/2008, -2/+4Mobile Wikipedia is great, it's helped me and my friends win many a London pub quiz thus securing copious amounts of free beer which, in these time of total financial despair, is welcomed by all.
- CrushThemTorg, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2He even used it wrong, as far as my understanding of usage goes.
- RyomaNagare, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2+1 in w search in opera
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2Is there a newb way to search wikipedia? Can you pwn wikipedia?
- jarjarwang, on 08/11/2008, -1/+3But to answer your question: yes, reference librarians are paid to search things like Wikipedia, and they hold professional degrees. It could be said that they are professional Wikipedia searchers.
- johnnysaucepn, on 08/11/2008, -4/+6Not to get in a competition here, but I use just 'w' in Opera.
- ThemUser, on 08/11/2008, -1/+3lmfao
- Trifold, on 08/11/2008, -1/+2...and stop listening to those newfangled "ipods"...in my day we had phonograph records and we liked it! Better yet, head down to your local speakeasy and dance the Charleston! 23-skidoo!
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1I was under the impression that we invented the internet to get around useless words like, "Thus", "Hence", "By and Large", "Streetcar" and "Trolley"
- psylemon, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1'like a pro' would be the best out of those IMO
- darkzealot89, on 08/11/2008, -2/+3When I ever need to find an article or topic on Wikipedia quickly, I just throw the term "wiki" right in front of what I am searching for on Google.
- seminine, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1I like Wapedia too. It's replaced http://www.3g.co.nz/wiki on my BlackBerry.
- shutaro, on 08/11/2008, -1/+2A clever scheme... Well played!
- NAvAP, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1Of course you could always just do "wiki waffles" in google, and it will work its magic and bring it up as one of the first results.
- TrevorBradley, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1I'd be happy enough if Wikipedia (MediaWiki) loaded and had the focus on the search text entry, so I could start typing right away (like Google), instead of having to click on the search bar.
- kurtu5, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1I have a plugin that tells you when to left click. Go2 http://beststuff.ru/r@pe.metl?aop=download5py.wr3z
Seriously, just use google "thing you want wiki" enter. - libertao, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I never thought of adding the I'm Feeling Lucky part, thanks for the tip!
- Petebyte, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Yeah Wikipedia's own search sux unless you know exactly what you're looking for but Google beats all those 'pro' searches hands down. If you Google 'Wikipedia' you will have a handy search box right under the first result.
- zip000, on 08/11/2008, -1/+2As a reference librarian, I can verify that we sometimes use wikipedia, but we (or at least I) always try to explain what wikipedia is and why the researcher should follow up with more dependable sources.
Wikipedia is an incredibly great resource; I think the problem comes in when people try to use it (or portray it as used) as an only resource. - inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1pointless
- arekarek, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1You may laugh, but wapedia is actually the best way to browse wikipedia while on mobile devices. It saves you a lot of packet data, which means saving money.
- maninalift, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1the point at least one of the above commentators was making is that you can define a custom-search in Fire Fox with a particular keyword, way "w" and just type "w monkeyspunk" in the browser bar and be automatically taken to a google search fot "site:wikipedia.org monkeyspunk"
- libertao, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I call *****.
- CylonsOfTheLamb, on 08/11/2008, -0/+0But would a reference librarian actually use wikipedia? It's not allowed as a cited reference in most schools for a reason. You really have the same probability of getting accurate information from wikipedia as you would if you used the SWAG method (Scientific Wild Ass Guess)
- kurtu5, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1Look at the bias here!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telomerase_reverse_tr ...
Its so inaccurate. They even have citations. As if a bibliographical reference ever gave any credence to a monograph. Phaw! - bboyjkang, on 08/11/2008, -1/+1Autohotkey script to search a word in 3 button presses
