- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -10/+59The OS itself does not look like OSX at all. Features might be similar, but how many times can you reinvent the wheel?
- Snoz, on 10/12/2007, -16/+62Dear Apple fanboy (samsoffes) :
STFU! GO SUCK ON A 1ST GENERATION SHUFFLE.
Thanks

There's a profanity filter. Use it if swearing offends you. - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Remember that video mockup of Longhorn Microsoft released a couple years ago?
Talk about overextending yourself. - WorldGroove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24@defectDS
At the risk of getting buried, I'm gonna say that video made Vista look very cool. - orbit1979, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32"they finally gave up said lets just copy os x"
Not even close. - mranime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23@Atomic1fire
You must be new here. - Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Who remebers this.

Watching that brings tears to my eyes. - alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23Oh, cursing has it's place, but there's no need to be so short-tempered, is there?
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Vista has come a long way. Can't believe people though build 4074 looked better.

take forever for images to load without it. - MackDiesel2010, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Talk about pictures of software development
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15The screen shots only show changes in GUI. Think about how much the underlying operating system code has changed and how much the user will never see. I'd like to see the number of lines in the kernel back in 2002 versus the final release.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Holy crap! Give me the operating system they used in the video! ...Better yet, the supercomputer they used to demo it!
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10If OSX had a different theme, and this Vista released with OSX's current theme you'd be still crying how ugly it was.
If Redhat or Debian relesed with OSX 10.4 theme, you'd ignore them all the same too. - speaker219, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yeah, you know we really need torrents for about five images.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Hmm, i think vista's gonna suck."
I thought that too for awhile, but in the interest of objectivism, I grabbed a copy of RTM, and gave it a shot. Personally, I love it. Don't get me wrong, if my laptop didn't have a million driver and hardware problems with linux, I'd be running Gentoo, but if you have a decent enough system to run it, Vista blows away XP. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@defectDS:
Nice post. I especially like the use of the song by "Pink". I had no idea the suits at Microsoft were so hip!
I, for one, can't wait to "get this party started" with Microsoft Windows(R) Vista(TM) - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Am I the only one who misses the blue ice type theme? Glass is nice too though.
- nowiknowforever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I am an apple user but I am still sooo happy to see something other than stories
about iphones and whatnot...
thank you! - Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@mongrel
at the risk of being buried I'll suggest that perhaps they're a bit late to the show regarding transparency effects? - knellotron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Just for fair comparison, lets take a look at how far KDE has come in the same amount of time:
Behold KDE 3.0, released in April 2002:
http://www.kde.org/screenshots/images/1152x864/kde300-snapshot1-1152x864.jpg
http://www.kde.org/screenshots/images/1152x864/kde300-snapshot3-1152x864.jpg
And now KDE 3.5.5, released October 2006:
http://www.kde.org/screenshots/images/3.5/01-welcome.png
http://www.kde.org/screenshots/images/3.5/35-superkaramba.png
And the future for KDE 4 looks bright. I'd post GNOME too, but 2.0 (from 2002) doesn't look that different from 2.16 in most screenshots: http://www.gnome.org/start/2.0/screenshots/ - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Longhorn would have, and I guess did, collapse in on itself. It couldn't stand under all of the stuff they were piling on. Hopefully they can use Vista as a stepping stone to do what they wanted. At least we got a decent operating system in the end.
Still, I am impressed with Vista, especially compared to XP and the builds of Vista since I've been testing (Build 5270, the December 2005 CTP) - mongrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ahmed, no - that was an early concept video. I'm sure they had all those behaviors in the lab, but very little of that is being released. From a GUI standpoint the high point of Vista is semi-transparent blurry windows.
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wow, that is cool. was that an actual tech demo, or just a mockup?
- Kanundra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just switched to Vista on my work laptop and I must say I love the new GUI. Some of the menu's aren't intuitive at all, but at least the OS seams very stable. Getting 3rd party programs to work on Vista is another story though.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@alwaysmc2
You have a point.
(Sorry I thought you were one of those overly sensitive types) - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It might look better but you couldn't make any folders on that build. :P
- EasY_TargeT, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Wow, vista looks so much better in that video
and I love how they skip me - mongrel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Atomic, the Apple praise is (and always has been) all about being in the vehement minority, same reason tiny insignificant countries have really really big parades. Just show them that you have an iPod and that'll make them happy. Don't make direct eye contact though.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Name two other things that were removed. I bet you can't. The only thing people are able to name is WinFS.
90% of what WinFS was has been incorporated into everything else, ranging from the Search indexer to SQL Server. - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10what is it with all the apple praise
- kernokerno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4shiny poo, always be...never mind :-)
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OBKenobi: You'll get dugg down because you think you have a better grasp of design than the countless designers hired to design Vista.
Don't like the theme? Change it or turn off Aeroglass. It still isn't going to affect the 99% of people that think it looks awesome. - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Aeiri
You know nothing about WinFS. To you it's just a catchy acronym that you've heard from other parrots such as yourself. Please tell me what WinFS was going to do that MS hasn't been able to incorporate into Vista without WinFS? - raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The best type of desktop or application is the one that keeps you busy or preoccupied, not the one that makes you mouth off in defense of it like a rabid fanboy on Digg.
I like OS X, Beryl, XUL, GoboLinux and WPF. They are all interesting to me, and I like working with them. But I don't go off saying that my choice of window manager, operating system, widget toolkit or layout engine is better than anyone else's, even if they're either doing the same or the exact opposite (putting other's choices down on the basis of presumed "inferiority"). It's pointless.
On the function over form thing: I think that there's a method of function to the madness of form.
Someday, they're going to find something useful and strategically important for Beryl to do, other than plug-ins and themes by the plenty.
Someday, WPF will serve a greater, more popular purpose other than being a competitor to Flash and PDF.
Someday, we'll even be playing 3d MMORPGs on some Dashboard or Yahoo widget, via some massive Javascript implementations.
The developers and vendors just have to keep the user public interested long enough before any of that happens. The name of the game is giving the developers an inch so that they can go a mile with it. - Ayavaron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Site is getting slow.
http://duggmirror.com/software/Screenshots_of_Vista_from_2002_to_Today/ - stoneyjonez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd have to agree with you on that one. I have Vista Ultimate (RTM) installed on my computer, and honestly it 'feels' a lot like using a Mac.
- shakestheclown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am using both, Visual Web Developer 2005 Express and SQL Server Express on Vista RTM, both of them work just fine.
I had to turn Visual Themes off, which is the first thing I try when apps crash on Vista. This usually fixes the problems for 90% of the programs out there.
You also may have to run them as Administrator or disable UAC.
Photoshop, VMware Workstation, Nero, OpenOffice, Winamp, etc all work fine as well. - wabbiteh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As much as I respect KDE, and like the look of it... You must admit, part of the reason for such a huge jump in 4 years time is because KDE didn't look that hot in 2002, by any standards.
- Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Pause at 2:19 and you can see a tooltip pop-up saying "we should change that third bullet point"
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, with SP1 for the both of them, and UAC turned off, SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 should work perfectly.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@perfectDS
I love how they had to screen "youll be kissin my ass"
And I did like the name Longhorn better. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um... hardware accelerated graphics... Vista can do that.
Whether or not they tore up all that eye candy is another story though. - osiris24x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While I truly have a difficult time caring about Windows Vista, I do hope that it contains some original and innovative features, so that other OS makers don't get lazy at the lack of competition.
- Aeiri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Most of the anti-MS crowd flat out ignores anything under Vista's hood."
All the good things under Vista's hood that made we want it so bad were removed. What happened to WinFS? - MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Most of the anti-MS crowd flat out ignores anything under Vista's hood.
It's much more sophisticated, but you get attacked or blocked when you mention it.
So just keep smiling *Love Apple*... pretend to be a zombie and maybe the rest won't catch on.
You'll live longer. - 35263526, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's beautiful. That being said, given what they're doing with things like WPF, the foundations are all there for some third-party (or even MS itself in patches and/or expansions) to do all the stuff in that video.
P.S. rledwich, you're kidding, right? No offence intended, but you must have been living under a rock for the last ten years. A geforce2 could generate those effects without much effort. Also, was it just me, or did they have ~1 second showing a ME presentation? I watched it again, and I'm pretty sure I can see it, but I'm not 100% sure b/c they skipped past it so fast (not that I can blame them). -
