- nethenm, on 04/01/2008, -3/+32It does it kind of sloppy by scrolling down and take a screenshot and then stiching them all together. I wrote a utility like this one and it takes a screenshot of the entire website in one shot. http://www.nathanm.com/index.php/webshot-website-screenshot-capturing/
- Schrade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22The Pearl Crescent Page Saver extension is much better: http://pearlcrescent.com/products/pagesaver/
No reliance on Java at all! It works with Windows, MacOS X (PPC) and Linux x86. - qwerty967, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16It's great that your utility doesn't use java, but it is buggy as hell.
When I tried to take a screenshot of slashdot, webshot.exe took up all the cpu processing power, sent my memory use skyrocketing, and caused dialog boxes to pop up endlessly. I had to kill the process to regain control of my computer.
Taking a screenshot of Digg almost did the same thing, except it stopped freaking out after a short while. It did mess up the shot by capturing white space that was at least a dozen times longer than the page itself. - H2SO4, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14WOW.......now this is Digg worthy
..........http://www.nathanm.com/index.php/webshot-website-screenshot-capturing/
Nice job! - moiety, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Which I've had to do more times than I care to remember.
- wladi001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11There is a newer version of Screen grab! on the Author's Homepage
http://andy.5263.org/screengrab/ - Egoist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm gonna have to second that one. Loading an applet in Firefox on my 2ghz system with 2GB of ram causes everything to lockdown while it loads. I can't wait for the day that java dies the horrible death it's been putting off all of these years.
- michir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9anyone already tried this one: http://pearlcrescent.com/products/pagesaver/
pretty handy too, and it does the same thing, i think. - IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You're method (which is simply taking a printscreen, whoopee) doesn't work for longer webpages that scroll beyond what you see on the screen. That why this extension is handy - it does that.
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10No, it just made me realize that MAC users are lonely and always have to post on topics concerning PCs.
As noted there are several programs that already do this for the PC, some free. So why would I want to buy an overpriced MAC - jamescarlos, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5i agree, except it doesn't capture flash at the moment.
- ados, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Also, it's for windows only. I wish there'd be something like this based on the firefox or konqueror engine.
- tweeto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Got it, tried it but wont use it because of JAVA, just hate it and all the nasty things it does to my Firefox.
- rusty_g, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8i guess a little more handy then doing just PrintScreen and CTRL-V into my Photoshop or whatever image software of choice then stitching it together that way..
- kevincannon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The pearl cresent one is great. It doesn't need to scroll down the page and it's a little bit simpler.
Unfortunately though, due to a mozilla bug, it can't capture any content that's in a plugin (e.g. flash/quicktime) - moiety, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10That's actually pretty handy, thanks
- kriskhaira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've tried both and Pearl Crescent Page Saver seems faster and easier to use.
- sargant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I use this:
http://pearlcrescent.com/products/pagesaver/
Free as in beer, not speech, but very useful nonetheless. - Niffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3etruscan...
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/
PDF Creator acts as a printer in windows. Simply print a page and select PDF Creator as your printer and save anything as a PDF. Works in Firefox, IE, anything you name it.
(edit: damn TrnsltLife, beat me to it) - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Doesn't SnagIt cost like $30? Plus, it can only capture what is currently on the screen. SnagIt is not a replacement for Screen Grab.
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is nice, but what I'd really like is the ability to save it as a PDF (on a PC). Saving webpages as PDF files is the one real use I can picture for PDF's, and it's something I can't do in Firefox.
...I hope someone can prove me wrong though. ;) - bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even better is PDF reDirect from http://www.exp-systems.com/
Hit Ctrl+P and it appears as one of your printers. You can also use it to combine multiple docs into one PDF - great for saving multiple web pages. It's free and works with any browser. Sadly, it's Windows only. - dustedbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The amount of extensions for firefox is insane. But I noticed A LOT of them are very buggy. I mean...it's a good idea...but what ever happened to Print Scrn? ;)
- silverfire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Personally, I use GrabCaptureScreen (with autosaving), lighttpd, and PHP 5.1.2 so that every time I hit printscreen, it updates screen.php with the newest screenshot. Makes life so much easier when I want to share screen grabs on IRC.
Aside from that, it's now conformist to use Firefox, so I switched to Opera. Everything is flawed though = - amitpagarwal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here are links to some more screen capture software for webpages:
http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/06/how-to-capture-save-screenshots-of.html - twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you use gimp you can acquire a screenshot of any window pretty easily. It will give you a crosshair that you just drag onto the window and there's your screenshot. The gimp method doesn't tie you to any certain image formats either. Once it's opened in gimp you can do whatever you want to it.
Although this will allow you to get a screenshot of the parts of the page that you would need to scroll to which is nice. - tomhung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Release the source please!!!!!
- zonemen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So which browser rendering engine does this utility use?
- schleufer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been using Screen Grab for a while- in fact I found it here on Digg under an article about the most useful Firefox extensions.
I have seen plenty of errors in stitching. If you have an image in the background that doesn't scroll, it can get really wonky too.
But overall, it gets the job done quickly, and it is super easy to use. I still use it all the time, and I'm glad to see it get its own recognition here on Digg. Plus, I can look at other similar methods that people use. - nethenm, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2I corrected the problem with the slashdot page. The memory and cpu was because all of the error messages. The error messages were because the slashdot page height was incorrectly determined and the thumbnail images couldn't be created. It is now fixed.
- TrnsltLife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@etruscan
Just download CutePDF from cutepdf.com. It can print from your browser (or any other program with print capabilities) straight to a PDF file. It works great, and it's free. - LFTravel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can quickly capture just a section of a page with the Firefox Snapper extension.
And also with imagemagick, which can be installed on Linux, Windows, and Mac:
http://tips.webdesign10.com/how-to-take-a-screenshot-on-ubuntu-linux - bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is great for myspace profiles that are soon-to-be-deleted, or overly dynamic web pages. digg++
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Best extension ever!
I agree with dustedbunny, is that there is so much extensions, many of them leading to security problems too!
Anyway I wish I could capture a section of the page... oh well. - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4On a Mac, you can do this in any web browser. Hit "Print" and then "Save as PDF" - it will save the entire page as an image PDF. You can then use Preview to convert the PDF into a PNG.
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1front page bisnitch
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what's up with this pdf-crap? this prints to a .png. not a f'n terabyte sized pdf. just to declare a winner...
- freshyill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you've got a Mac, don't bother with this unless you need a Firefox-specific screenshot. Paparazzi is definitely more elegant and it uses Web Kit. I do use this when I'm at work on Windows, however, and while it's kind of awkward, it gets the job done.
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Even better is the Pearl Crescent Page Saver - no crappy Java required:
http://pearlcrescent.com/products/pagesaver/ - michaelschade, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Very helpful for working with my clients and easily gathering their feedback. Thank you!
- Skeuomorph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OneNote 2003 SP1 Add-in: Send to OneNote from Internet Explorer PowerToy
http://tinyurl.com/o6axm ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads.... )
Use the Send to OneNote from Internet Explorer PowerToy to send the contents of a Web page from Microsoft Internet Explorer to a new page in Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) with the click of a button.
This sends a "screenshot" of the complete web page (including not visible parts) into OneNote as a .png file. Mark it up, or save the .png on its own. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I find http://www.browsershots.org/ much more useful in web development... does cross platform screenshots remotely. Just give it time to generate your browser shots, often under heavy load.
- artman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using Paparazzi lately too. Pretty good web page capture and has pdf feature to boot. Damn fun to use.
http://www.derailer.org/paparazzi/screenshots - cadaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Snag It is probably one of the best screen capture programs. It can grab anything visible on the screen from text box to the entire page and there's no stiching required. It even captures movies and can make a demo type video by recording mouse movements. One of the things that's especially interesting is, it let's you highlight any region in an application so you don't get the wrong size by manually trying to highlight it.
- gypsyjoe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Did you really just say mspaint?
- niffkin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1654640,00.asp This one has been out for awhile too
- shadgenki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Fantastic! Snagit is another good little program that you can print the web page to an image.
- kitreno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd like to use gimp to screen grab as twistymcgee recommends, but can't work out how, GIMP is installed etc in windows but the help doesn't shed any light on how to grab a large web site sceen from fire fox explorer or any other ap - can twistymcgee or someone else help me please?
- 500freestyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thats nifty.
- ados, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3WE HAVE A WINNER!
