- ravkass, on 12/15/2007, -2/+13Open source rocks.
- sammykeyes, on 12/15/2007, -5/+10Importing/Exporting to Google Docs? Um, Microsoft and Google aren't the best of friends, so it wouldn't make sense to do that.
And chances are, if you have a copy of MS Office, you most likely wouldn't be using Google's office programs. To put it bluntly, MS Office wins in features and design in productivity software.
And if you're looking for viewing/accessing your Office files from the web, you can use Office Live Workspace. http://officelive.microsoft.com/
It's free, and you can let other users edit them as well if needed. Or you could use any online storage site, like SkyDrive and as well, let other people download/view if wanted. http://skydrive.live.com/ - DefaultGen, on 12/15/2007, -2/+6I've had a couple issues with the spell/grammar check not being as powerful as Word but with this, I don't really even have a reason to pirate Office anymore. This is extremely useful (for someone like me too lazy to actually back up important documents).

I had the problem with the button not working, this solved it.
Known issues
1) After installation of version 0.5+ of AddOn on some non-Windows systems it is possible that "Google Docs" menu isn't visible. To resolve this problem please open Extensions Manager (Menu Tools -> Extension Manger) and Disable and after this Enable AddOn. Next restart OpenOffice.org. Everything should works well.
2) On some Ubuntu/Kubunut (probably also on some other non-windows systems) AddOn menu "Google Docs" is visible but nothing happens then we try to click on options from this menu. If we look to console we may find information about error like this "Exception in thread "Thread-49" java.awt.AWTError: Cannot load AWT toolkit:". This problem is probably caused by the fact that instead of Sun Java OpenOffice.org.org use GCJ to run Java programs. To resolve this problem change used JVM to Sun Java (Menu Tools -> Options -> Java, and select Sun Java 1.6)
3) On any operating system AddOn menu is visible but nothing happens then we try to click on options from menu. To resolve this problem try to set used by OpenOffice JVM to Sun Java (Menu Tools -> Options -> Java and select Sun Java 1.6) - oepapel, on 12/15/2007, -0/+3Microsoft already does this. It's called Office Live Workspace. It is in beta now.
You get one click edit from the browser that launches Word, Excel or Powerpoint and you get one click save back to your online account.
You can share and comment on others documents if they've shared with you.
Give it a try. I had to wait a few days to get my account because they have a waitlist. - ruhaanlp, on 12/15/2007, -7/+10Hey Microsoft when is this feature coming to Office
- thatcrazycommie, on 12/15/2007, -1/+3Has anyone else had the problem that Google Docs doesn't recognize indents? There is no way to transfer an essay to Google Docs and have it preserve the paragraph indents, and so when you transfer it back to OO or whatever, you have to put them back in. It's super annoying, especially if it's a long paper.
- Ludnix, on 12/15/2007, -0/+1I agree, this doesn't seem to bring much ease to the process considering importing and exporting documents in google is only two clicks away. Hopefully in the future an auto-synchronization tool will be released to use open office as an interface which saves everything directly to google docs.
- PrometheusZero, on 12/15/2007, -2/+3Yes, this is the internet. Unfortunately, sarcasm's presence is really only noticeable in tone of speech, and without that, it'd be almost impossible to tell, unless it's something really outlandish as such, "MAN, OFFICE AND OFFICE LIVE IS WAY BETTER, 'CUZ I PAY CASH FOR IT!'
- Pixelpaws, on 12/15/2007, -3/+4This really isn't anything new. Google has long since allowed users to import and export OpenOffice files.
- fatas, on 12/15/2007, -0/+1But not from the application itself. But OOO has had this feature since 2.3 was released, a few months ago.
- fordhamwt, on 12/15/2007, -1/+2Does a person have to end every sarcastic comment with "/sarcasm" to convince a geek it is so?
- sgoogle, on 12/15/2007, -0/+1Dude, you need to learn how to be decent. I'm using an optical mouse on a desk covered in scrates and score marks. It jumps every now and again. My hand coordination is fine, I just need some basic furniture.
I think your username gives an insight into how you are as person. DON't come back later - BatmanStan, on 12/12/2008, -0/+0its all coming together. Soon no more need for microsoft office
http://godzillafiguresblog.com - fordhamwt, on 12/15/2007, -4/+4Additionally; This story wasn't about a feature comparison, but you went there. OpenOffice fills my every need. It even opens every work document I throw it's way. Admittedly, though, I don't make it a point to complicate my documents.
I also admire that OpenOffice stays true to function when compared to the latest MS offering. - lolo2007, on 02/07/2008, -0/+0Why does anyone bother with Google Documents/Writely... Zoho.com is a far better alternative. Is anyone doing any serious writing on google docs? I can't see how; you have no clear visualization of formatting or countless other things a real app will give you. Zoho does a lot more, but still it's not the perfect replacement.

Digg really needs an undo button - fatas, on 12/15/2007, -1/+1When Balmer's BMI drops below 25.
- raluca74, on 12/15/2007, -4/+4this is what I looking for! thanks! Microsoft : look and learn!
- muppethouse, on 12/15/2007, -1/+1It is disappointing how incompatible java programs are between JVM versions. Unfortunately I have to use the non-free Sun JRE 1.6 to use this plugin on Linux rather than the IcedTea 1.7 JRE, and then for other software (Cisco ASDM) I really need the Sun 1.5 JRE. Hopefully as Java opens up this JAVA absurdity will clear up.
- ristopaarni, on 12/16/2007, -0/+0This is great news to me.
I'm updating my writing process and with this co-operation things turn out faster.
Thank you making this possible. - whiskeysquared, on 12/15/2007, -2/+1Why does anyone bother with Google Documents/Writely... Zoho.com is a far better alternative. - SSUK, on 12/15/2007, -1/+0Seriously though, Office excepting .odt files would be pretty nice... I can dream.
- pimpdown, on 12/15/2007, -3/+1I like the concept of Google docs but it needs a lot of work and fine tuning. They should have just put Openoffice online. At least this feature will be coming to Microsoft now that someone else thought of it. ha ha
- locojones, on 12/16/2007, -3/+1Alright, interoperability between two things that nobody uses!!! And this is news, why???
- RapeSlut, on 12/15/2007, -5/+3So by "stay true to function" I suppose you really mean "be an underpowered barely usable rip-off of the world standard Microsoft Office"?
- RapeSlut, on 12/15/2007, -5/+2No. it's easy to tell if you don't have a ***** brick for a brain, the problem is the Internet is full of Asbergers sufferers who can't understand anything that isn't carefully broken up into the easiest possibly format to understand.
Seriously have you never read a book with sarcasm in it? These tubes are so clogged with complete jackasses it's sickening, if you don't get the joke ***** off it's because you're a ***** cockgobbling jackhole, not because the sarcasm didn't translate to the written form. - scavenger07, on 12/15/2007, -3/+0@pimpdown: Openoffice is Java-based, so you actually _can_ run Openoffice in a browser (google for Ulteo, it's down at the moment).
- Tangeuray, on 12/15/2007, -7/+4MSFT is a joke now...keep making xbox's cuz your hold on PC domination is almost over...pretty soon the "OS" will simply be getting online :) 3 cheers for Google and open source
- RapeSlut, on 12/15/2007, -6/+2No you need to stop being such a greasy piece of ***** that you can't even click a computer mouse properly. Get some basic hand-eye coordination and come back later.
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -5/+1Wow, you are an *****, and Im pretty sure I hate you, but you are spot on about Open Office.
- RapeSlut, on 12/15/2007, -8/+4SHUT THE ***** UP YOU DELUSIONAL FANBOY!!!
