- u2wedge, on 11/08/2007, -4/+19SMF kills phpbb3. phpbb is such a spam sponge it's unbelievable. SMF is rock solid and definitely is the forum package to use.
- Roger, on 11/08/2007, -9/+21It stands for Smile Mother *****.
- fyrfyter, on 10/28/2007, -1/+13IPB costs too much money, for people running small Forums. SMF is free, and great software for the price.
- randomvictim, on 10/28/2007, -3/+14SMF = simple machines forums. It is a free forums, better than phpBB or invision.
- kenvsryu, on 11/08/2007, -1/+11I've been waiting for this to switch from phpbb2 since phpbb3 abandoned the old users.
- justinjstark, on 11/08/2007, -22/+31Uhhh, what the ***** is SMF? Maybe next time you should be a good little journalist and include a definition in the description.
- shadow82x, on 11/08/2007, -0/+9What a great software. I am testing this on a site and it is great. There are plently of new features and what a big change from 1.1 to 2.0. You guys are going to love it once it becomes public. :) vB and IPB are in trouble now.
- afx1, on 11/08/2007, -1/+8SMF is considered by many the best free forum software out there. That's why this is such a big deal.
- adolfojp, on 10/28/2007, -0/+6You know... free software doesn't run on best wishes or on the spirit of the community. It runs on the time and effort of its developers that like us, live in a world of money. Many people are more than willing to pay for good quality free software.
- sleepingkiller, on 10/28/2007, -0/+4For all your questions about SMF, view the wikipedia page on it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Machines_Forum
The link provided at the top links to the Announcement which contains a brief overview of our release to Charter Members. - Floris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4One can't really compare a free solution like SMF to a commercial product like vBulletin :) But as far as freeware solutions go, SMF is the best in my eyes, and vB for the commercial side of things.
- spyres, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I've had no problems at all with phpBB 3.0 and have been running it on two busy forums since RC1. Thanks for the Fud though. :)
- akabugeyes, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Awesome job to the development team! This release is a huge milestone for SMF. A whole lot has been put into SMF 2.0, and I am sure the work done to it won't go unnoticed. :)
- sysroot74, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I've been waiting for this for a loooong time. Now I 'ought to get me a charter membership! :)
- tempusrob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You know, as often as I'm quick to say "Just ***** Google It" it's pretty common practice to define acronyms upon their first use. Even if the title still had SMF, it could have at least been written out in the description.
- Don2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2woo lots of good feature :) i m happy :)
- shadow82x, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It will be. ;)
- riderraghav, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm glad to see th release :) ....
Can't wait to get my hands on it when it gets released for normal members ... :) - vbgamer45, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3This is a huge release with support for other databases systems other MySQL. Installing modifications on other themes, moderation center with post approval, and much more. Job well done!
- epohs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I can tell from the features listed that this is probably web forum software, but not even the article linked offers a clear definition of WTF SMF actually is. boo.
- zwaldowski, on 10/28/2007, -5/+7While I like SMF, this should not be on the front page. It's a private beta.
- Burpeey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I agree, it sounds like that right now. Nevertheless, the process that led to this construction actually occurred very naturally.
Initially, SMF just had people who donated. Then, with every new release the developers wanted to iron out the bugs before releasing it so the end-users would get the highest quality software on each release. However, they did need some kind of a testing-community, so the developers decided to release the beta's to those who had donated. After a while this became common practice and they decided to convert the donations into a membership construction that did the same as before.
All in all, $50 isn't much for the services they provide, it's not just for the beta's but you also get the forum installed on your server by someone with experience and you get support from an experienced support-team. - JayBachatero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's a problem with our DC. 40% of the power has gone out. That includes our DB server :(.

- hvyhitter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Its good stuff
- GarrettB, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later. - GamingTrend, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Patching those other free forum softwares is a PITA most of the time. SMF has made it easy. What's not to like?
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But the public beta is months away yet. Let alone the final release.
- zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1SMF is not obscure; it is one of the major players in the forum "wars".
- MrAldo, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1vB is bloated... Unuseful features for the average user.
- jakepaulus, on 10/10/2007, -7/+8Burried as lame because this hit the front page as the result of people gaming the system.
- chrisjs169, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://www.simplemachines.org.nyud.net:8080/community/index.php?topic=190812.0
- spyres, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2War? How stupid of you. Since both are free, folks should just give each a shot and use the one that's best for them.
- allyant, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I hope that was sarcasm.
- MrAldo, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1Um, and Diggers did put it there...
- rickcaudill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A huge release for the SMF team. We would like to thank our team members and most of all, our CM's.
- jukhau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1SMF is ok, I prefer using it instead of phpbb, because later has nowadays constant spam jamboree.
- KevinJB, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3"vb ftw!"
"I hope that was sarcasm."
No, I hope *that* was sarcasm.
Whether you guys like it or not vBulletin contains many, MANY more features than SMF, is better supported, and has more mods out there.
On the other hand, SMF is free... I don't know about free forums, but when I started my own I used SMF, then when enough members donated so I could afford it I purchased vBulletin, and have never looked back. Just about all serious forum owners use vBulletin.
What disgusts me is all the people commenting "OMG VB WATCH OUT!!!", etc, probably have never used it - after all, it costs money. But like I've said, I've used BOTH, and on the same forum in fact, and yes, vBulletin is much much better than SMF, from just about every stand point out there - usability, features, SEO, security, stability, scalability... To think otherwise is deluding yourself.
Now, I don't know about SMF 2.0, obviously I'm not a charter member so maybe they made huge leaps. But from what I can see, it doesn't look like it.
So, if you are willing to pay, use vB and you'll never look back... on the other hand if you are looking for something free SMF is probably the way to go. - Oldiesmann, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Contrary to what you believe...
SMF is not "limited source"
We are not "trying to make money by enticing people to buy pre-betas". Charter Membership is optional (if we wanted to make money, we wouldn't be offering free software). Charter Members get priority support via a helpdesk, as well as several other perks.
We chose to use this license because it gives us more control over our code - forks, distribution of modified software, etc. are not always a good thing.
The project IS driven by the community - many of these features were added because of requests from the community.
Please stop trying to bash something that you don't fully understand. - zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Since both are free"
I hope you're talking about phpBB and SMF. - Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Its not obscure though
it was created to replace Yabb SE
which was a php fork of YABB a perl forum script
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Machines_Forums - darkmule, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1SMF is *free*. However, the beta for their newest version just so happens to be released to their 'charter' members, as its a private beta at the moment. None the less, its steps closer to a public beta, which is exciting.
- shadow82x, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Why not support the great software? It's a lot better than vB or IPB... Were lucky SMF2 is not paid becuase it looks like paid software after using it.
- spyres, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Only available at this time to those who forked over $49 to be a "Charter Member"
From their site:
Ever get the feeling you just want more? Have a need for speed and can't wait to get your hands on the latest version of SMF? Well then, a Simple Machines' Charter Membership is what you're looking for. We offer the following additional services for only $49.95 USD a year:
Advanced Betas
Upgrades
Support Services
Paying for the right to be a beta tester is just sad. - Andres08, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Smf is great. I folowed phpbb, but it is made like a spam magnetical forum.
SMF is build enough good for every user, it is stable and community is great.
Andres - RolandWhite, on 01/20/2008, -0/+0Congratulations!
- hayaldunya, on 01/07/2008, -0/+0Thank You
- ohay102, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0thank!
- losedude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Awesome :) I can't wait, I hope someone makes a bridge to joomla for this version D:
