- JayBachatero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is a huge milestone for the software.
- chiefbutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I used to be an IPB person, and thought it was the best, but over a year ago I came into the light that is SMF. It is the best out there, and it is free! What else can anyone ask for?
- akabugeyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Indeed this is a big milestone. With SMF 1.1 going gold, I would personally recommend anyone using SMF 1.0 to upgrade to SMF 1.1 now. For those of you who have not tried SMF before, I highly encourage you do so. There can't be any harm, except for a few minutes of your time if you should not like the software. If you do not know SMF very well, it has many features that other free and paid alternatives don't have. Some features you don't see on every forum software include: Quick Reply, Inline Mass Moderation, AJAX message editing, CAPTCHA support, an advanced but easy to use permission system that makes use of global and local (by board) permissions, a package manager that makes installing mods a breeze that also allows minor releases (ex. 1.1.1) to be updated with a click of a button inside the admin panel, a recycle bin for deleted topics, and many more.
- viulian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have used SMF 1.0 for more than 3 years now - and I have never had a problem with it. Stable, robust, flexible permissions and ease of use, painless upgrades from the admin backend plus the collection of mods available made it so I never had to check if other forums out there do a better job.
Excellent work SMF team!
I will upgrade as soon as I'll find a similar theme so I won't confuse the forum members :) too much with all the new features. I'm starting to search for a theme right now! - Trekkie101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very cool to see it released :)
- Daniel15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, the final relase! This is definately a huge milestone! Well done to the whole SMF team :-)
- M3g4d37h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"SMF kicks the rest of the forum software world in the nuts" would be a more appropriate headline -- Whether free or paid, SMF is the best. My hats go off to these guys for developing such a fine piece of software.
- rickcaudill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What can I say about SMF that hasn’t already been said? Its’ an awesome rock solid product, that keeps getting better and its Free. Kudos to the SMF team for all their hard work. I can’t wait to upgrade to 1.1 Final.
- shyampandit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep, I love SMF forums too :)
- tristanperry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just installed this version, it's a really great one! Definitely recommended.
- Snowcone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SMF is my favorite forum software at the moment. vB is ok and phpBB is moderately ok, but SMF is where it's at.
- rrasco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no cone, phpBB sucks the big one! you should know this. SMF rules all BBware! good job team and keep it up!
- davidpey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great!
- Blainex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good Stuff
- visualbrother, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0SMf is pretty cool, it would even be good as a commercial. As a free package its close to brilliant and has no real competition from any other free forum software. Mind you its not heaven and definitely not even close to the genius of vBulletin. Another problem is the devoted, sometimes petty, community that doesn't like criticism.
Like Macs SMF has been turned into religious icon and virtual heretics are burned to a crisp on the SMF support forums. Even some of the moderators can be pretty abusive and this for me was enough not to go with SMF despite the quality of the software. (Not venting any personal frustrations here, just something I noticed over the years.)
To end on a positive note:
Another big plus is there are some decent CMS bridges around for the most popular portal scripts. If you are looking for a proper forum for your Joomla or Mambo site SMf is the only option worth considering.
