/work - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I remember when Google Desktop first came out. My roommate was bragging about how cool the software was - and how instant the searches were. I decided to test it out for myself. I typed in '.jpg' - and was instantly bombarded with low-class porn. He just said "Uhm. Huh... What is that stuff?"
Funny... He didn't have Google Desktop on for very long after that. I could have sworn he liked the fast searches... - bvaughn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16http://www.duggmirror.com/software/Review_of_Google_s_Desktop_4/
- blackmajik, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21at what point does 60 diggs mean 60 clicks??
- munkt0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I used to think google dekstop was pretty cool, and then I discovered the 6Gb index file...
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15What's the difference between #1 and #3?
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Least informative review of all time
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I had Google desktop loaded for a while. Kept wanting to use it, but never really had a reason. I just keep my stuff organized...
I didn't understand at first, but then realized that I'm the kind of person that knows where every single thing is in my apartment. Lots of people aren't like that. If you ask them where their stapler or whatever is, they have to rip half their house apart looking for it. To each their own I guess...
Edit: Why is r2d7 getting modded down? I think that's a pretty fair question to ask... - kirupa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yes, I use MS Desktop Search (Enterprise Version), and the Enterprise version displayed results faster, took up less RAM, and the index file was considerably smaller than the Google equivalent. Of course, your mileage may vary, but I have been quite impressed with WDS.
- DJNewStyle, on 10/12/2007, -14/+19do you realize that I took the time to sign in and unbury your comment just so I could add another -1 to it?
"For the win" is bad enough. "[NOUN], FTW!!!!!!!!!!" is just downright gay. - CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think most people do that, I do on my Mac. But a quick search on Windows is crappy to say the least. Google Desktop is as fast as Spotlight.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you don't want the sidebar, turn it off. Easy enough. The latest version lets you get away from the sidebar entirely by having "gadgets" which you can drop anywhere on the desktop. But those are not required either, really.
As far as the search goes, some of us use our computers for quite a lot of things. Yes, it's great to have a folder hierarchy, however, when you're trying to find something that you worked on over a year ago and you don't remember what filename it was or what the document type was, just that it was for one particular client, then it helps to have a good search tool and index. - Marlon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's the real estate of the sidebar that bothers me. Also, my computer's organized, I use firefox for my RSS needs, so why do I need this again?
I am glad they took care of the app size. Good for you Google (read: whoopdedoo!). - chicoguzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I launch nearly all my applications with Google Desktop. Tap control twice, type in the first one or two letters of the app's name, then select the shortcut.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's not really a technical review. It's an AP newswire story meant for mass consumption.
- cacfus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Has anybody else tried Microsoft's Desktop Search? As sacrilegious as this may sound, I daresay it's better than Google's.
- frizop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Desktop Search is not only for files but many other things as well, web history, chat logs, finding an email, etc. I especially like using it at work for finding an email (Outlook's search is painfully slow)
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I use it on my work computer because it does a great job finding information related to a given order from the thousands and thousands of Excel files we have sitting around.
They're filed intelligently, but the Windows "Search inside files" thingy is painfully slow. - esaba.com, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I, for one, am more interested in the sidebar that comes with Google Desktop, and not so much the search capabilities.
For the most part, I can find my files just fine. However, with a large monitor and my display set at a high resolution, I have a lot of unused desktop realestate I'd love to put to good use.
Gmail being my primary email client and Google Calendar being my primary calendar client, I'd love to have the ability to efficiently access both those services from a sidebar. I re-downloaded Google Desktop after calendar was released but was disappointed not to find any Google Calendar support built in.
Hopefully Google Desktop 4 will bring with it the Calendar support I am hoping for. - louisjonny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3everyone should try it out,...the shift+shift and ctrl+ctrl is awesom feature...made my life so much easier...the digg gadget is so informative...just shift shift twice and all digg stories are in front of me..not to mention weather, stocks info, photos, news and goog calendar...i havent tried the latest vista, will be curious to see what MS is doing with its gadgets and sidebar...ultimately convenience and pleasant interface will win...so far MS has the nicer UI..but convenience, winner goes to google...
- sumrandommember, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I use it on my 87th monitor... to the right
- dekkeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3MSN Desktop Search is a repackaged and much improved version of lookout (www.lookoutsoft) which they bought. I'd been using Lookout for a while when Google Desktop first came out. I tried it for a while then quickly switched back.
Recently I installed both MSN Search and Google Desktop, and I think Google is a little behind on usability. Being able to easily sort search results, automatic categories (contacts, communication(e-mail), files) is awesome. Ever since Lookout I stopped sorting my e-mails and just storing them in two folder. (inbox + 'dealt with').
I do like the gadgets, but here I like konfabulator (widgets.yahoo.com) better. It has way more widgets available.
I WANT to switch to Google, but MSN Search and Yahoo Widgets are just a better solution right now. - justinjest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google sure has awaken the competition, and everyone gains regardless of their preferences.
- diggitydank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I keep everything on my computer organized as best as possible, but dealing with 50 emails a day, it is hard to keep it all in that perfect spot. Not being able to remember who sent that email or what the exact subject was (which may or may not deal with what I am looking for), Desktop comes in very handy. Also, my department at work has a shared drive with close to 10,000 reports on it. Since I did not create most of those, but get requests often for them, I have Google Desktop set up to search that drive. The same issue as emails, the title may or may not reflect what I am looking for. It saves me loads of time. I very much like the Ctrl-Ctrl pop-up of the search bar. I guess I do not use it that much to find my own files, but to find files that other people are unable to give an accurate description/subject.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"without stupid patches and security updates that does god knows what."
Yeah, you wouldn't want to be secure. You could apply to be the next poster boy for Apple or Linux, they like retarded Windows users they can make a pointless case study out of. - yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i just typed .jpg into my google desktop search. and the first result was your comment.
- JRBlack10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you like the SideBar kind of thing, you should try Desktop Sidebar [ http://www.desktopsidebar.com/ ]
Free of course. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google Calendar support is there, you just have to look deeper. All those sidebar items are plugins, really. Some plugins are just included with the base download. There's multiple calendar widgets/plugins, and they are listed right there on the GDesktop's plugin list.
- thisisjace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*Rmvd by Author, because Digg sent this Comment Reply down the damn page. WTF?!*
- bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Have any of you compared GD to Copernic? I used both GD3 and Copernic, and found that Copernic was faster, more comprehensive, and it didn't give your results in a web browser. At least Google fixed that moronic idea with GD4.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ frizop - interesting. I guess for me any important correspondance is in outlook, I save msn for the frivolous "what're you wearing" kind of stuff.
@ uptown - the difference between #1 and #3 is clothes :P
@ kimos - I'm the opposite with my apartment but I know where everything is with my computers heh. - albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love Google Desktop, but how do I get rid of all this gadget stuff? I like the idea behind Konfabulator / Dashboard / Whatever, but every time I install one of them, I find that I don't really use it very much. All I really want is the searching capabilities.
I know how to get rid of the sidebar, but how do you get rid of the gadgets button? - jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i still say, google desktop is fine. But, it failed to find something in a search, where msn desktop search found it. Proof's in the pudding, so i use msn. This was on a work's computer, indexing network shares.
- Nanobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ugh... Their mantra has always been "Don't be evil", not "Do no evil". Why is it that so many news stories and reviews get this wrong? You wouldn't see a news story claiming that McDonald's slogan is "You're lovin' us."
- shagz7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.blinkx.com/
I like it better than Google desktop search. - yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1least entropy article
- jgreene777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with ya. i still update when the security updates are released, but i have had computers refuse to boot after some of the updates. it's a real pain in the ass to have to reformat and start over because of a windows update... don't think it doesn't happen.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5THANK YOU! I read all the links, then I Digg them (isn't that the way it's supposed to be?) Just because there are x numbers of Diggs, doesn't mean that the same x number of clicks occurred.
- djblast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2google desktop HATES my comp, probabbly because its docked to the right side of the screen, and when I start up a game sometimes, the game starts all wierd. But when I was using google desktop 4, it was VERY cool, with the calendar integrated in it, AND i always had the top digg stories listed on it.
I reccomend it, if it works well with your comp and if you have a widescreen monitor.
i like commas. haha. - Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Copernic is awesome.
- cello, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I only Digg the stories I "dig"
I don't digg every article I read, or I'd be digging all of them ... and what's the point of that? - xlii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You got title all wrong. It should be Google Desktop (Beta) 4.
Oh yes, 4 beta version, all that long.
I wonder if ever it will go final... - cebbs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3man people on here have a google fetish or something
- theOster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i just like that i can be reminded that i already have something on my computer before downloading it again. (large user manuals come to mind)
- DoubleTap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the desktop search as it is faster than most, but there is no partial searches. I need to find emails, files, etc based off of partial words all the time (names that I can't spell, etc) and Google doesn't cut it.
- ColdAtlantis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The privacy issues make this a no no IMHO........

- jgreene777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1um... yeah. i know. that's why i was doing a bad impression... ya know so much about the Legend, why didn't you recognize that? He said "I love scotch. scotch scotch scotch." If i HADN'T tagged it as a bad ron burgundy impression, i could understand your not getting it... {napolean impression}gosh!{/napolean impression}
