- mymoustache, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24I've always used the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder simply b/c its so tiny and simple (and has such a cool name), but this one is good to know.
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml , FYI... - Armagetto, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30In communist Russia Keyfinder Thing mails you!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_reversal - TheOtherGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I have used Belarc Advisor to help find my Office XP keys.. it finds a few more common application keys as well.
But this one looks pretty convenient. - kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Turn off McAfee auto scanner. It will delete it automatically.
- rlelina, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hmmm, I get the product ID from systeminfo but not the product key.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I use ProduKey all the time. It can scan an entire network.
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html - clemsontiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5These have been around forever. Rockxp works great too.

Huh? Do I have to do all the thinking around here? - diversionmary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thx for the magical jellybean link, I much prefer standalone apps that I can leave on my thumbdrive.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5lol.
Generally speaking, it's a bad idea to run anything that AV apps delete.
There may be exceptions, but it's a pretty good rule of thumb ;) - shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3umm... sure it does.

- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Not if you have a software firewall that notifies you when a new app wants to access the internet.
- 404UserNotFound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those of you using this to retrieve serial numbers from a DELL, be aware that the key will be incorrect. DELL pre-activates all its versions of Windows XP with an identical serial and places the license key on the outside of your case.
Also - be aware that Online Product Activation is turned off for DELL computers, so if you ever have a need to format your DELL - you will need to call Microsoft to request activation as the online activation will not work, and Microsoft will not allow you to pre-activate unless you are using Windows XP Pro or Server 2003 (Instructions are on microsoft.com in the system administrator materials). Windows XP Home cannot be pre-activated by a home user to my knowledge. - kicman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3you could also try this tool, it will recovery MS office key too
http://www.ac2tech.com/tools/keyviewer/keyviewer.php - culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Be forewarned that anyone unfortunate enough to be running AV/AS from Symantec (and probably others) will certainly flag these programs as "Hacker" tools / exploits and want to quarantine / delete them.
I highly recommend excluding a path for just these types of tools. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Does it work on Linux and retreive Linux serial keys?
x-P - V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I make it a point not to use any .NET needed programs on my box
- 1citizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 These programs have been around for some time and I would say Rockxp is a good program , It can recover isp username and password also from your system , I do believe any attempt at changing your product number should be done in safe mode but a handy little tool for password recovery
- NobleArc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Piracy is one thing, but stealing from your school? Dude.
- loof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Half-life hasn't used keys since steam came out in 2002 but almost everything should be in the registry somewhere if you can find it.
- MrRockabilly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also - beware, dont buy a Dell.
- MrRockabilly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have always liked SIW, Product Keys, Passwords, Network Scans, this little app does it all. Carry it on a thumbdrive and use it on the fly.
btw,
http://www.gtopala.com/about_siw.html - bifflarken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about Norton Antivirus? As much as I can't stand the damn program, I'm going to have to reformat my gf's computer, and she can't find her norton disc. I figure we can download the program online, and just use the key.... true?
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. Guess it makes sense though.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.ychatsharp.com/kft/ is the home page.
- iamthewinnar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have never had a problem with symantic antivirus trying to delete rockxp.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Also - be aware that Online Product Activation is turned off for DELL computers,..."
Wrong. I did a complete fresh install of MCE 2005 on my new Inspiron E1705 with the key on the bottom of the laptop, and it ran through online activation just fine.
You are correct though that the key in the registry of the factory install is a dummy, and won't activate. - artanis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@kickarse
Oh ok, that makes me feel better!
/notreally - V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use System Info for Windows by Gabriel Topala. It's an excellent freeware system info tool and lists keys from many software apps too.
http://www.gtopala.com/ - WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Out of the box, MCE 2005 is basically Windows XP Pro minus domain membership capability and being able to utilize Active Directory.
- kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's nothing but a bad call on McAfee's part. I know for a fact that the program does not have a virus.
- cgreentx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.belarc.com
- axis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I used Magic Jelly Bean at school to retrieve all the VLK keys for Office 2003, XP and Server 2000/2003. Got to love the remote registry reading feature!
I am pretty sure you can lock the entries though, so the keyfinder cant get access to it. Maybe Microsoft should start storing keys in other places, if you are in a AD enviornment. - Yellowone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lame...this stuff has been around for a while....guess there's at least 1600 ppl that didn't know this though
- watuzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This software would have been cool, but the .NET Frameswork doesn't support 64-bit XP Pro as of yet.
- 404UserNotFound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ WackyT
Here is the information: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/partners/productactivation.mspx
This went into effect in February of 2005, but it says nothing of MCE. The fact that MCE can still be activated online has nothing to do with the fact that other versions of Windows XP and Server from OEMs cannot. Despite MCE's similarity to Windows XP Professional/Home - that does not change the fact that it is a separate product.
This only refers to pre-installed versions of OEM Windows XP as well. Purchasing an OEM version as a system builder will still leave you with the ability to authenticate online. It is only those versions installed with 'dummy keys' which are affected.
To preserve your pre-activation for Windows XP Pro/64/Tablet - please see here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/oempreac.mspx
This does *not* work for any other versions of Windows XP. - theWrkncacnter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How do you find the keys for Half LIfe, or something?
- 404UserNotFound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was not familiar with the Media Center Edition Online Activation. Although when it comes to Windows XP Home, Professional, and Server - Microsoft keeps track of the licenses DELL uses and deactivates the online activation for those licenses. Their rationale being that most users who purchase DELLs do not bother ever formatting their computer and in the rare instances that they do - a call to Microsoft's Customer Support is not too big of a burden. As long as you answer their questions appropriately "Yes this is the only computer I have installed this copy on" they will issue you a new activation. Microsoft also lists pre-activation methods on their website, but I have not verified them as I was reinstalling Windows XP Home on my wife's DELL.
- jstem1994, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0UnEasySilence had this first (I think), and I posted this info there:
Did some searching to see if anyone was complaining about it, found this:
—————————————
For all the people who didn’t like my original product (Keyfinder Thing 3) because it needed .Net 2.0, Here is Keyfinder Thing Lite!
Its smaller! (100k) Its Faster! but it doesn’t have the features of the full version. Its basic and to the point now and the only dependancy is MSVBM60.dll (The VB6 Runtime that most people have anyway thesedays.)
Currently it doesn’t support quite as much software as the original but the rest WILL be added in due course.
There is no website, no documentation, no FAQ.
This version will be updated regularily with new titles (something I think the other products of this genre lack) and isn’t targeted specifically at MS products (which the other products of this genre seem to be.)
At this point it is only available on this thread so if you see it anywhere else let me know and i’ll go shout at them!

————————————— - ieatlinux, on 11/26/2008, -0/+0i used magic jellybean key finder at my high school and it set off an intrusion detection alarm, good thing i was logged on to some one Else's account!
- habubu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0off the subject, but does anyone know how to get my passwords to various websites from the netscape browser so I can fdisk, or is that stuff encrypted or something?
- raymondcc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks guys for your comments.
I tried other suggested serial numbers retriever but still nothing can beat KeyFinder Thing simply because it has the ability to retrieve keys from 90 software titles. It would be great if the author of this great free software could implement a feature where you can scan the network :) - andrewpercy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hi, can anyone tell me how to find the serial number in an IBM machine? I tried with scriptomatic but its not capturing the serial number. Thanks in advance
- mihailupu2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unfortunately, none of the programs mentioned here are able to extract the serial for Windows Vista x64 :(
- zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1been using this for over a yr now, great tool.
- Complexium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is really awesome! *Dugg*
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Like come on now....If people have legit copies of Windows do you really think they'll fork over their serials for piracy?
