- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+61This is a troll. It is not a matter of being a Windows or a Linux fan. It is a matter of being realistic.
Some software will not run on Linux. Installing Linux under those circumstances will not fix anything.
Pretending that Linux doesn't have any problems is unrealistic. How many times have you encountered hardware that s not supported by linux. How many times have you have to tweak and config obscure files just to fix or do ordinary tasks under Linux. I can't even get my Lexmark printer to work.
I will choose between Linux or Windows according to the pre requisites.
Pretending that any of the two is the solution for all computer problems is nothing but a troll. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -20/+61You forgot a few steps...
Before -'Head to Apple retailer'
* Sell off house
* Sell off car
* Sell yourself on a street corner
(at this point you may have enough to by an Apple) - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27"Hello. I'm a douchebag. And I can copy and paste large amounts of text."
- drwtsn32, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30"Having worked for the now-incorporated Geek Squad branch of Best Buy"
...at that point I clicked the "back" button. - Kwipper, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26I really wish that the Linux and Apple trolls would stop commenting on topics made for people who use the Windows OS.
Look...
We do not care what you think about our operating systems. We don't give a ***** what you trolls think. Leave us windows users alone! If we want to switch to your OS we'll do so, but your trolling is not helping us move on. How about this. Focus your trolling efforts into something more productive.. like getting game and software developers to port stuff to your opertating systems. LEAVE... US... ALONE! - EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I got a little further...
"Prior to my discovery of an invaluable sequence of commands..."
Apparently no one else at best buy knew about this...why does that not surprise me? - klepto, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23''(Linux fans will mod me up - MS fans will mod me down. Let's see who wins.)''
I'm a linux fan moreso than a MS fan but I'm not gonna ***** and say WindowsXP does not deliver. As I am probably more biased to opensource/linux, I can still admit that WindowsXP is really quite an improvement from that Redmond company and they are finally doing things by combining innovation and experience, something the unix/bsd/linux community has had an advantage for decades.. But the opinion of Microsoft improving their code can change depending on the outcome of Vista... - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -13/+27I think many diggers are going to have heart attacks if this goes front page.
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Some command were not needed, or had typos.
* C:>cd[backslash]
* C:> attrib -h -s -r boot.ini
* C:> del boot.ini
* C:> bootcfg /Rebuild
* C:> chkdsk /R /F
* C: > fixboot - capran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Please...enough with the fanboy quips.
It is possible to hose a Mac OS installation. It's just a lot more rare than on Windows.
With OS X, you do have the underlying Darwin OS core, which is FreeBSD/UNIX based as everyone knows. You can boot into single user mode with Command-S I believe.
Command-V enters "verbose" mode, which simply shows you a "scary looking" UNIX kernel and OS initialization terminal, and might give clues as to why it's failing.
Once in single user mode, you just need to know some UNIX and where things are located on the drive to be able to fix it (if possible.) - pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Not one comment with any insight lovely.
- Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Opps.. wrong thread.
But on this thread.. I don't do linux or mac because I'm just not very passionate about hating everyone else and telling them hope stupid they are. Kinda like to get WORK done. - Matteos, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Even Better solution:
-Drink
-And drink again
-Smoke
-And finally drink some more - Burgerman851, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Interesting . . . I'm a Linux buff who just modded chad78 down . . .
"How exactly do you install a bootable CD"
Drill a 1/2" hole in your case (opposite the motherboard).
Secure the CD to the outside of the case using a 1/2" nut and bolt.
That's just two steps. - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Looks like he's good at copying and pasting text, therefore he's using Linux, since thats the only thing its good for....lol
- DogzOfWar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I disagree. The "bootcfg /Rebuild" is not intuitive if you're missing a HAL.DLL file. To me, if you're having a problem reading a registry hive or a system DLL file is mixing, then it's not a "boot" problem, per se, as a Windows file problem. I don't think typing HELP at the recovery console is an end-all solution like you're saying.
I liked his procedures, which are clearly documented. It would have beaten repair installations that are somewhat risky. - shakeyshakey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And the fanboys war rages on...
Please keep to keep the troll mode off at all times.
1 - We don't want to hear your opinion about Windows (since it will be biased)
2 - We don't want to hear that your OS is better, safer, girlier or whatever
3 - You have as much right to post a new "Linux Istallation OMG!" article every 5 seconds on digg as much as we do.
Please input in your minds that no OS is perfect and holy. Please. I beg you all. - djhash, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Nerds they act like they know and are socially removed, or they simply know about one specific thing and dont think about expanding their knowledge.
Geeks are the ones who spends their time researching stuff and understand it before even talking about it, and they expand their knowledge into different applications and subjects and incorporates them. And they dont spend their entire life away from socializing and doing only one or two specific things. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But see, this guy is SMART. He went out on the web, did some research, and found command line commands (not just tools and external hard drive enclosures) that did everything the customer needed without adding on a huge pricetag.
- FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder if the Boss Geek told him he was being too efficient.
- djhash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well.. because you know what HAL.dll is.. but basically if windows wont start at all, to a layperson its as good a boot.. I mean technically if windows was able to give you the BSOD, then you computer actually BOOTED.. just windows is having trouble starting. However, i do agree, its not that intuitive, and a person like me who was always on-call to fix my parent's friends computers will be able to think of this much easier than some other people.
But hey, at least i made his commands go down from 8 to 3 :-P.. (read above).. I'm happy that someone actually took time to put that up, with screen shots too. Thats how we all learn, slowly, but learning. - kcghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Digg!! Digg! This is an awesome digg, its these things that I use digg for. I have seen that error a couple times before, and I eneded up making a backup using Knoppix or sumthin and re-formatting and reinstalling XP. Now the the next time it happens, I know what to do. Nice.
- cillian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oops. Bury this.
- FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you need to use the full path: "attrib -h -s -r c:boot.ini"
except use a backslash in the path - can't use backslashes in replies on Digg for some reason. - kuri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What can I say, I used this on my broken laptop and it worked... very nicely spelled out. Even for Geek Squad.
- anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3God, will you Linux and Mac people stfu? I use all three OS's depending on where I am and what I'm doing. I have a Windows and an Ubuntu box at home, I use Macs at college for graphic design (can't afford one for home. and don't tell me about the Minis, they just aren't powerful enough for me) I also work in IT for a public school system that runs exclusively on Windows.
When one of the 10,000+ systems in one of my schools gets hosed, how likely is it that I can get away with "Installing Linux" as a solution? Or getting my bosses to reconsider and buying a ***** of Macs? It's not bloody likely at all, in fact... hell will freeze over before any of my superiors would even CONSIDER such a thing.
The info in this digg submission is solid, and can save one a lot of time. I'd rather do this than reloading an image over our network or reinstalling from scratch. - suspect23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This does treat the symptoms, but in some cases doesn't cure the cause.
The majority of windows PCs that lose their boot sector for no reason have hard drive (hardware) issues. I would definitely recommend running a chkdsk /f (as was said before) and also boot to a hard disk drive diags program to check for hardware problems. Try googling for "Ultimate boot CD" or "Seagate Seatools" - TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Personally Windows works fine for me, but this would have saved me a reinstall or two when I was messing with some *settings* in the past.
Good article. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"NTLDR is Missing
Press any key to restart"
I wonder how many times Geek Squad ran this when a floppy disk was in the drive.... - daggerhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2without step #2 ( type 'y' when prompted), sounds like you're going to stuck with a non-formatted, non-working DOS prompt.
- protocolor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4every time i do C:> attrib -h -s -r boot.ini i get invalid parameter errors. it's only worked for me if i separate each parameter on its own line like the article does.
- nucleocide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Hacking Windows XP in Three Commands"
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5God dammit! The parents of a friend of mine had the EXACT same error message on their computer about three weeks ago! I tried the FIXBOOT and FIXMBR commands, but they didn't work. Ended up just pulling data off with Knoppix to a USB key and reinstalling XP.
WHERE THE ***** WAS THIS ARTICLE THREE WEEKS AGO?! - digitaldivider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this sure as hell would've saved me time when I was reformatting and reinstalling XP for friends and family all those times. I could've just done this and been done.. but noooo....
- rattboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@TubaTechno
I totally agree. I'm a recent mac convert, but I'd have to say that's DESPITE the fact the that most Apple fans are jackasses and need to get over themselves. I really like my mac mini, and I've had very little trouble with it, but I don't have a problem at all sitting here at work w/ this Dell XP machine. Since I get to choose, I choose Apple, but I don't see why that means I need to convert everyone else. Not to say I don't push OSX to friends on occasion, but it's not the be-all end-all that the fanboy crowd seems to think it is. - p3ngu1n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"If you're too stupid to figger out linux"
Ah, I love irony. - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4because you're an idiot.
- zionKing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3To me, a geek is a person who wants to be informed and a nerd is a person who wants to be thought of as being informed. Geeks are good people.
- jbanks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1generally if your getting this error:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup
using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'R' at the first screen to start repair.
it means your registry is corrupt, first step i always do on customers computers is run a chkdsk /p to find out if they're hard drive is pooched. if you get errors run a chkdsk /r but if you get a message that says "you have unrecoverable errors on your drive" you need a new hard drive. now if chkdsk /r runs and completes restart the computer if it boots up A1 if you still get the same message follow this article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545
if that doesn't work. format. - user, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.short-media.com/printcontent.php?print=r&id=313
Ah, much better. - n_md, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the sfc command may also be useful if system files are messed up, but I've never had the chance to use it:
sfc /SCANNOW
Scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. - jbanks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sfc /scannow is probably the most useless command ever, ive actually never seen it fix a problem
- mikexstudios, on 10/12/2007, -31/+32What? Windows can be repaired? *Shocked*
- heffer2k02, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2God. If you really want to be anal you can do it in one command:
ATTRIB -H -S -R C:boot.ini && DEL C:boot.ini && BOOTCFG /Rebuild && CHKDSK /R /F && FIXBOOT
Good article. Never knew about BOOTCFG /Rebuild. Will undoubtedly proove useful one day. - Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah we can all trace down individual errors and copy over files to fix everything or reformat and reinstall yadda yadda but if this guy has a checklist of no thought involved steps to follow that fix a very common problem that's a very positive thing in my book. It will leave me more time for downloading mp3's and looking for p0rn.
- MadOgre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Feh, just boot up a Mini PE disk, run check disk, MBR Fix, and then maybe Perfect Disk. Clean out all the junk from Temp and Temp Internet, run some scans with AV/ASW... Usually that does the trick.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't you mean cd to go all the way to root? Or did you want to type cd c:?
- Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone post the recovery console options from a machine that stops on agp440.sys
That sucker is the kiss of death. - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thats probably why Apple and Linux doesn't have a very big market share....not because they're bad products (because they're great), its because they see all the Apple and Linux trolls and are scared.....
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I explain to most people that come in that I could fix it but that a format/install is probabaly a good thing. I can back data up and throw and OS on w/o a second thought (like many on this site). It's sort of a spring cleaning thing. It's not a bad thing and it's not a lazy way out. It can fix unseen problems.
