/![!1]+/ is the correct regex for replacing any number of bangs followed by one or more bangs or 1s with a single bang.
riah: your regex will replace only a string of either 1s or bangs alone. ie. 11111 or !!!!! but not !!1111!!!!!. It would also change 11 or 111 to a ! - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6As much as I don't like excessive !'s, I think that automatically and transparently removing them is a bad idea. They are useful for being able to easily detect inferior stories and comments.

I know exactly what you mean; the exclamations and the dangling 1(s) are just ridiculous. So much so that I made a license plate making fun of it. Apparently the joke was on me though, because well less than 1% of the population who has asked me about the plate has ever figured it out. Interestingly NC plates can have all manner of punctuation and best of all, they only count as a half character.
