- lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30yeah, uh...how will it show us the digg effect in real-time when we can only see it on duggmirror?
- livet0ski, on 08/17/2009, -2/+26"if you wonder this page is hosted on a 350 MHz PII PC, 182 MB RAM, Apache 2.2, MySQL 5.0, PHP 5.1.6. Will it handle this?"
....
NOPE - dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22The fact that this ***** server crashed isn't ironic.. it should be EXPECTED!
Christ... how many of these "test the Digg effect" links have we seen hit the front page already? Don't we all understand now that pages hosted on weak systems are always going to crash within minutes? What is fun or interesting about this?
It would just be better if the real-time graph was hosted on a system that can handle the load with certainty... so that everyone who clicks the link actually gets to SEE something. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I wonder how long he waits to redirect that link to porn.
- Madh2orat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18What if we leave you at +0 then? catch-22 doesent apply, and you are completly wrong (wink)
Diggers win again. - digitalme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Just made the front page, it will be interesting to see if it goes down. That would be ironic, to say the least.
- Jsmakr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15The title should have just been Real time "DIGG Effect"
- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Will be very interesting to see if the site gets dugg. So far nothing to see. Digg please.
- tamoneya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+101 page view per minute isnt very interesting
- affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Form a diffrent source

Oh the irony! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"I wonder how long he waits to redirect that link to porn."
If he was smart he'd do it at this second with tons of casino ads everywhere - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How about this, then. We leave your first comment at 0, but digg down the crap out of your latest.
- digitalme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7And now it's back... it's just very slow.
- Corgana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I wonder if the results will be skewed from people refreshing the page to see the updated stats?
- donpdonp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The website to measure the digg effect has been dugg into a smoking hole in the ground. hilarious!
- JMoore3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5On the other hand, what an excellent 13 minute experiment...
- vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5dude. that is so weak.
- wotcher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7...Amazing. It is already very slow.
- digitalme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Most certainly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I just dugg you down because your comment is stupid, not because I agree/disagree with your stupid little theories.
- deohieu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just can't help trying this:
for i in `seq 1 500`; do wget -bO /dev/null http://picktwo.uni.cc/digg/; done
And now it's wget'ed to death :( - dyvbond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Another poor soul who didn't have a good enough education to spell "decent" correctly.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Too bad it took the Digg Effect at night (for the US), a time in which the effect is much smaller.
- Corgana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@khyberkitsune
Please stop being so childish. Digg is about the masses, not individuals. - nauzilus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You're being dugg down because you're a tool.
- Darkkish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Haha there is one guy out in Wyoming, poor guy...
- HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What if I just digg your down for being an arrogant twit?
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It is still up you guys, just going slow, seems to top out at 45 views a minute
- TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5www.duggmirror.com ? lol doubt mirroring will help this statistic...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6damn, HOW IRONIC!
- exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Look up ironic. No. It wouldn't be. Posting your own site on digg is asking to get dugg, i.e. not ironic.
Same goes for all the irony people below. - bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"If you wonder this page is hosted on a 350 MHz PII PC, 182 MB RAM, Apache 2.2, MySQL 5.0, PHP 5.1.6. Will it handle this?"
Are you kidding me, you dont stand a chance - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If I went to a firestation and said "Hey, I can measure the output of your firehoses with this handheld device. It allows 1 gallon per minute to pass through it" I think they would tell me to go to hell...
Why do people digg this page when the fool running it basically claimed the same thing:
"If you wonder this page is hosted on a 350 MHz PII PC, 182 MB RAM, Apache 2.2, MySQL 5.0, PHP 5.1.6. Will it handle this?"
The answer is HELL NO - it's not showing the digg effect - it's showing the PII 350 effect - basically it's showing us the maximum number of people a PII 350 machine can serve up. - crazyman533, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3spam
- wickedman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This sucks!
I was expecting some more statistics, not a single visitors graph.
You'd be better of linking to a google-analytics page and then publishing the results. - FiReaNG3L, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Theyre also to savvy to even read the article, in my experience. 95% users < 30 seconds on a page with an article that takes at the very least 2 minutes even by scanning it? Yeah.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3and its down.
- Uncle_Joe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have to second that. It is absolutely pointless attempting to record a digg effect on a PII.
- smhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmmm... that doesn't tell the whole story though. Is that the only thing the box is doing/serving? If so, is should be able to handle the traffic that the chart showed when I looked at it. Also consider constantly processing the traffic logs is taking a hit on the server. If it processing the logs at every view, that is an unusual amount of CPU being used and reading/writing to the file system.
Additionally, the specs of the box are always the bottleneck on a site. The pipes leading it, the network it is sitting on, DNS, routers, etc... Basically a ton of things. It is also running under Windows. Those box specs are pretty weak to be running Windows alone let alone a web server on top. That same box running a small footprint *nix may handle the task better. (not Windows bashing, just for the task at hand and the specs of the box, it is unnecessary overhead.) - coit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually, its called being "slashdotted" you ignorant Slashdot snob, and if slashdot is so great, what are you doing here? :-)
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Affect is a verb: I affect my friend's feelings whenever I punch him in the face.
Effect is a noun: The Digg effect pwnz your server.
When effect is used as a verb, it means to make something happen — to effect a law is to write it. To effect a website is to make it. - noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was surprised by the somewhat constant stream of viewers. I would expect a more "bell-shaped" graph. Perhaps he needs to post a longer time frame.
- popltree2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Baby Juicer? Is that anything like a Magic Bullet?
- ryan4477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1's doing good so far! dont be such a negative ned!
- coit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, how do you combine memory chips to make 182 MB?
- general13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I believe it's called the "Slashdot" effect, and Digg is just another Johnny-Come-Lately
- Helfax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Tufte weeps at lack of actual information in this graphic. At 22 minutes we are told that their site received 45 page visits/minute... What was the actual impact on their server? How do we know this? What are they using to calculate this information? There is no way for us to know this from the information they've provided.
Empower the viewer and don't spoon feed him poor data. - coit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm very surprised that this site hasn't gotten more hits. Every time I've checked in, its been about 60 to 100 per minute, and now it's down to about 1-2 per minute.
I would expect a top story to generate much more traffic... -
