- thecosmicpope, on 02/03/2008, -0/+361[Comment buffering]
- estvir, on 02/03/2008, -1/+319Only 10 years too late, but good job. It baffles me how RealNetworks or whatever the parent company is, hasn't gone bankrupt yet.
- erasmus0284, on 02/03/2008, -2/+274"Ryan Luckin, spokesperson for RealNetworks, insists that both versions of RealPlayer are not badware, but acknowledges mistakes and user misconceptions exist in both products."
User misconceptions are at fault for the player being terrible and the designers lazy? - sf49rox, on 02/03/2008, -11/+244While we are here, don't forget about VLC
:-) - mmmmmbiscuits, on 02/03/2008, -4/+180Remember Real Alternative if you absolutely have to play a file encoded with this crap:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternati ... - InfamousAtheist, on 02/03/2008, -1/+155It's good to see the professionals finally noticing that RealPlayer is a useless piece of garbage software built to trick the average computer user. I haven't installed it for years.
- vault, on 02/03/2008, -0/+138Good, RealPlayer is complete garbage.
- estacado, on 02/03/2008, -5/+105Real Player has been a bad media player even from the time Al Gore created the internet. Some things never change.
- thecosmicpope, on 02/03/2008, -2/+95VLC Plays them, thankfully.
- qedx, on 01/11/2009, -1/+83people still do install tham and I die a little bit inside when I see mp3s with the realplayer icon on people's computers
- themastersb, on 02/03/2008, -1/+83I considered RealPlayer to be malware a long time ago. It pisses me off when people still make videos in rmvb format
- geekoid, on 02/03/2008, -0/+78No, really... RealPlayer is gr[Buffering... 0%]
- SpectralSounds, on 02/03/2008, -1/+77VLC Plays everything. Greatest media player ever.
- dvdchris, on 02/03/2008, -2/+71I almost forgot about RealPlayer. Windows Media Player and VLC play everything; I haven't used it for the last 3 computers.
- virtualball, on 02/03/2008, -2/+67It's all the designers'.. BUFFERING 12.. 49.. 83.. 99.. fault, the can't blame bad design and bad taste on users. RealPlayer should have been wiped off the face of the Earth many many years ago! Not to mention they shot themselves in the foot with "buffering."
- l0k0, on 02/03/2008, -2/+67I wish all software would just remove all traces of it completely when I uninstall it. It's not that it's difficult to use Ccleaner and a registry cleaner, but sometimes stuff will still be left over, and casual users aren't capable or willing to go through directories and the system registry and get rid of everything. For example, I recently uninstalled Comodo Firewall, and removing everything was so much harder than it should have been.
- inactive, on 02/03/2008, -14/+74Now if only people could stop encoding videos in the Quicktime file format...
- inactive, on 02/03/2008, -7/+64RealPlayer is *****. Anyone who uses this crap deserves what they get.
- Kanidia, on 02/03/2008, -0/+53Wow I have been hating RealPlayer and that "RealOnePlayer" crap that they've been doing all the way in the 90s. My Windows 98 computer will never see its light...
- kingfoot, on 02/03/2008, -0/+51ok no really... it took them this long to get the deward?
- inactive, on 02/03/2008, -1/+51Oh man, Real Player.
Don't even get me started.. - badfrog, on 02/03/2008, -1/+45I stopped installing Realplayer like in 2000, when that RealOne POS showed up... How are people still falling for this crapware?
- inactive, on 02/03/2008, -5/+48Its gotten a lot better though.
I remember when finding the free download version was harder than finding bin laden. Every time you clicked on a download link you got a page of advertising for Real Player Gold. Those with an eagle eye could eventually find the tiny hidden link to the actual free version.
When installing they had a whole load of 'opt-in' email advertising, they tried to deliberately trick you into signing up, they had all the visible ones unchecked by default but you only saw that they also had a whole load of other ones checked if you bothered to scroll down. Very scummy, I'm surprised they didn't have a button 'don't not opt-in'.
Considering their business practices they deserved to become redundant, its just unfortunate that the replacement is Windows Media Player. Now suddenly they are all open source friendly (well I think their codec is still proprietary). Another company that decides to jump on board the OpenSource strategy at the last moment of life (like Sun and Java, Netscape and Mozilla, and possible Adobe and Flash if SilverLight takes off?) - silvanov2002, on 02/03/2008, -1/+39Hasnt it been bloat/malware for quite a while now? Im sure everyone knows that theres a realplayer alternative. Its linked above. for if you need to access realplayer files and need it that is.
- unitedstatians, on 02/03/2008, -0/+32Oh! 'RealPlayer'/1996- I really don't miss you, that goes for you too Musicmatch. Both had the same business model, a free download for the basic/crap, but for more adequate versions and upgrades, were only available for a fee $$.
- tendonut, on 02/03/2008, -0/+32Good ***** riddance. I knew something was wrong with this garbage in the late 90's. I am surprised it is even still around. My blood boils every time I find a website that insists on streaming ***** with Real's codec. These sites are more and more rare thank god, but there are a few large sites that still support it.
- Bhima, on 02/03/2008, -2/+34hmmm. Doesn't bother me at all, I'm watching the movie, not the interface.
- prisoner24601, on 02/03/2008, -0/+31How far they've fallen. I remember the days when they actually were more common than mp3 (at least for spoken word content, if not music) but their insane drive to cram adware down the throats of users (and astonishingly short-sighted unwillingness to get their codecs licensed for portable device players) killed them. Don't nag your users.
- greatcaffeine, on 02/03/2008, -1/+30So what's new here? I could've told you RealPlayer was ***** 10 years ago.
- oojamaflip2006, on 02/03/2008, -0/+28I'm not that surprised as sites like the BBC have a choice for streaming content as : Real Player or Windows Media Player. This is not including their new iPlayer - which is flash based, but I've written to complain to the BBC several times about having to pay a TV license fee only to be forced to use the horrific spyware infested crap that is RealPlayer.
- mode7even, on 02/03/2008, -0/+28ah, memories...
http://www.funnyhub.com/pictures/img/real-player-b ... - Bhima, on 02/03/2008, -1/+28double click on movie file. Watch movie
- terminal157, on 02/03/2008, -1/+23The format is a nuisance even when you have Real Alternative. When I see a RM file, I know there's about a fifty percent chance it won't work or won't work easily.
- Daveecee, on 02/03/2008, -0/+21You really don't know squat about compression, do you?
- londubh, on 02/03/2008, -0/+21You have to be careful when you install RealPlayer and then carefully go through the preferences to make sure it doesn't hijack stuff. Even then you can get some nasty surpises. It's been this way since at least version 6 or 7.
- FreakyT, on 02/03/2008, -3/+23Let me guess....you're using a Mac, and have QT Pro, right?
- IndigoMoss, on 02/03/2008, -1/+20Yeah Real Alternative is great.
- Chompy, on 02/03/2008, -3/+22Get ***** and die screaming in a fire with this fast, free middle finger in your face.
- gfnw, on 02/03/2008, -1/+19Most anime groups use x264 or Xvid. I have no idea what you are downloading to get rmvb files.
- dgendreau, on 02/03/2008, -4/+22I hate Quicktime! No full-screen mode from a web page! Grrrrrr!
- EvilFerret, on 02/03/2008, -0/+17Cool. What are you having for lunch today?
- estacado, on 02/03/2008, -3/+20But for the size of the file after rmvb compression, the quality is actually very good. Use Real Alternative to play it.
- Optimaximal, on 02/03/2008, -6/+23In everything but looks & interface. Its uglier than WMP 6.2 and the skins don't help.
- xTRUMANx, on 02/03/2008, -0/+16This isn't something new about real player by the way, its been like this for ages.
- drgmdp, on 02/03/2008, -0/+16avi is not a format, it's a container
- inactive, on 02/03/2008, -0/+16Thank you Jesus! I've been warning people about RealPlayer for years not bc of spyware or anything but that it just plain sucks ass.
- bincoder, on 02/03/2008, -0/+15Well, that's why the 'Real Alternative' codec is infinitely better. No adware, no bulls**t, just speed and efficiency.
- Quakee, on 02/03/2008, -3/+18I have VLC, can anyone clue me in please?
- grimward, on 02/03/2008, -2/+17I'm equally surprised, I knew this years ago.. hence I moved on to more interesting players :)
