- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Yet another IM service limited by the fact that it has no users and everyone will forget about it in 2 days...maybe less.
Cool idea, but unless you live in a city, whats the point. - MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Sure looks a lot like meebo.
- Dipster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Sounds a lot like Meetro.
- protocolor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13nice...when using a firefox beta 2 branch build i get this:
"We're sorry, but you are currently using an unsupported browser. radiusIM requires Internet Explorer 6.0+, Firefox 1.5+ or the Safari browser. radiusIM recommends Firefox and you can download it at http://getfirefox.com." - Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15No Opera.... that sucks.
- AmishJedi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10IM was invented for booty call purposes.
- konno, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Pity it's US ... would love to try it in Australia
- revvolutions, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14nice. tells me to get firefox. im on firefox bitch. no digg.
- fubes2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6wow show your picture AND your location on a map eh?
I vote for a name change to StalkIM and maybe a partnership with MySpace for media hype. :3 - bradym80, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This IM client was released about 3 years ago and never really got off the ground. I signed up, nobody appeared on my buddy list and I left.
I'm going to assume that google will implement this within the next 6 months considering they have both of the required components developed in house. But it will never really get off the ground unless females use it. Because as we all know, this was developed for "booty call" purposes! - ryouko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This should be worked in with the google maps find-the-closest-sex-offenders site
- Scik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Lack of Opera support = fail.
- z00k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah nothing says getting to know the pedophiles like this... :/
Still like the concept though. - middleman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9They show NY City on the site, but I live in a less populated area. I could see how this would be nice to have in heavy populated citys but, not really where I am. Its still worth a digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Dugg simply because they used South Park names for the demo.
- keesj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Arghh.. no Safari support.. Flash based.. sign up required to see what's it all about, slow as hell, unoriginal idea.. no digg.
[edit: not necessarily a reply to you titlesaysitall, got the wrong button] - TH3W1R3D, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No one in my area :(
Also slower than hell servers currently. - kazem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, totally. But they "blur" your location by 1/4 of a mile. But still, sketchy as hell. I predict a demographic that is 80% male...just maybe?
Edit: I think the only way this service would be successful is if they piggyback with an existing networking service. Friendster/Facebook/Myspace and/or AIM/GoogleTalk. Didn't google buy some company that did this local chat thing? Apple's rendezvous protocal can do this, but it can only look over a LAN I believe...anyone know about that stuff? - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"We're sorry, but you are currently using an unsupported browser. radiusIM requires Internet Explorer 6.0+, Firefox 1.5+ or the Safari browser. radiusIM recommends Firefox and you can download it at http://getfirefox.com."
I use Mozilla v1.7.13. :( - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Warning: When using Safari it's crappy.
- val1984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Filters Camino also but Camino uses the same Gecko as Firefox -> no digg.
- lonelycanuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I never got programs like this. Why would I talk to strangers that are around me rather than my friends or people I already know?
- phlux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ok, so I posted this in the OTHER Radius IM thread - but no diggs on that one:
sounds like a competitor to meetro. Hopefully these guys arent as egotistical as meetro guys.
I think the idea of this has a little potential - I dont know how much, but i dont think its a deep potential in the "IM and Chat" area as much as I would think it has value as an engine for commerce.
If you could allow for people to "ply their wares" in an IM forum and connect buyers and sellers based on geolocation proximity.... - GuyHitByTruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was thinking the exact same thing. It's Meebo plus Google Maps. Meebo is faster so I'll stick with it.
- ngageguy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Nice technology, but I have a feeling this could be used for "predator" style IM's. It only blurs a 1/4 mile? How hard would it be to talk a kid or potenital victim in to giving out the address. Scary stuff. No digg.
- RyomaNagare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is Preposterous, How can people visit a site, that so openly discriminates between browsers, clearly its blocking opera, even masking as mozilla won't work, but doing it as IE works halfway.
Story Buried. - Automatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sausage party
- superphly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys should check out http://jambo.net it's really nice and I think is taking the right approach to this PBC proximity based communications...
- lazyrussian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3well the nice thing about it is that you can access your google-talk, AIM, yahoo, & MSN from this program - no need for a stand-alone (well no need for it quite as much)
- themulf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I would love to see the web browser statistics for digg and slashdot.
- jacks0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I'd like to know, is do they ask you where you are? Or is it based on what IP you've been assigned? I was under the impression geolocation per IP is only accurate to the city level. Never the less, interesting.
- geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, the only way this would be useful is if it were integrated into one of the major IM clients like AIM, Y!M or MSN. These guys should forego the slow beta app and go straight to the buyout talks with one of those portals.
- djoek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2COUGH meetro COUGH
- lukasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1um... melbourne here, signed up fine. there's only a couple of people around tho.
- deboosher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1im from canada and cant use it... boo.
- GuyHitByTruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're right. Rendezvous only looks over a LAN. At least I think that's what you were asking about.
- sphinx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Meebo ftw
plus I cant really find anyone in my area.....stupid ***** small town. - cyroxos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yea, even the prompts are the same as meebo. Great code, though, so +1 digg just for the seemless code.
- KingAdrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a use for this - fleet communications. Imagine every cop had this in their cruiser -- they could see and communicate with other officers. Or if a trucking company had all of their truckers using this. Bike messengers etc. Of course you would still have the concept of "contact lists" but mixing in proximity is a great feature
**plugging my stuff** I wrote a in-car nav system that uses radius based IM, check out my last submitted story if you wanna read more about it - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jerks - They block Opera: http://www.radiusim.com/unsupport.html
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use K-Meleon 0.9 GRE
- powerf00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you're in a densely populated area, which is what this is meant for, it shouldn't matter.
- JanaLove2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0love the location part -- I'm hooked, so I'm helping them out by digging it (new to this)
- messengerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i also use koolim.com, i really dont need all these extra features.
- Leaddeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Coincidentally, this site is excellent for getting around the block on MSN Messenger that my school has. :)
- messengerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i will stick with koolim.com for now since meebo is blocked at my company.
- mike503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i had an idea like this, except it would use GPS-enabled cell phones, so people could constantly be notified when their friends are around
(rough idea ... obviously privacy concerns blahblah...)
this *looks* like it relies on manual updating and isn't "real-time" - so yeah looks like a meetro clone then? - ryok0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good idea, too bad it might not last...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hear that sound?
It's the sound of 6 guys living in a crappy house (meetro HQ) going "DOH!!!"
Gotta love web 2.0 .. biz plans rise and fall within a few months. gotta give props to the meetro dude vinnie tho- i saw him pulling a huge Meetro human-powered-cab thingy during the bay to breakers run. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1its like meetro but without the download
eventually this stuff will get incorporated (or bought) by yahoo or google or microsoft into regular chat clients. -
