- Hypersapien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5dvdcr, if you don't want iTunes (like me) use this -- http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
- psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"whats the point of this? whats wrong with installing quicktime? Its the best streaming and video content online."
There is nothing wrong with installing Quicktime. Too many people are assuming that my linking to Quicktime Alternative was some kind of attempt at slighting apple. The people here are much too easily offended.
Installing the Quicktime codecs and using your favorite media player is simply more efficient, and not all users are fond of the idea of installing multiple media players just to be able to play the videos they want. If you happen to prefer the Quicktime client, no one is telling you not to install it. - Hiker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not to mention a lot of people aren't authoring QT content and wouldn't mind being able to play QT content fullscreen. So why should they be forced to buy QT just for that feature? Also, look at players like Mediaplayer Classic, which is bundled with QT Alternative. You can not only play QT content fullscreen, you can increase/decrease the play speed and manually frame advance thru a vid. Or you could use the plethora of other similarly cool features in other players (like BSPlay). Seems like a few good reasons ppl might use QT Alternative to me (goes well with Real Alternative as well)
- seven5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well i can understand using it just for the codecs and using your own video player.. but, "Not since Flash 8!" is a joke. Go check out the h.264 stream of the iPod introduction, its coming in at 64kBytes a second, thats it. And it looks AMAZING. Not to mention the hd trailers in h.264.
Most flash videos i've seen look like crap, adn the players rarely stream right. And you certianly can't instantly jump to the end like you can with quicktime. Thats because its not streaming, its a progressive download. Flash video is a bit hackish if you ask me. But i do think its a nice way to get instant cross browser video in browsers. Most everyone has quicktime so they should use that, but they don't they use WMV, which MS has made sure looks like crap on os X.
its a shame - socket, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow. Now I can finally rid my machine of any trace of foul Apple software. Apple's software all around is highly overrated. OSX is highly overrated. iTunes is highly overrated, and Quicktime player is ***** and even an Apple fan-boy can realize that.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No digg. Tried QT Alt for a few days but when I de-installed it, it ***** up my iTunes and regular QT installation so bad that it took me six hours of googling for solutions to get it working again.
- farfromsubtl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Changes in QuickTime Alternative 1.66 :
- Added localization support. This should also fix the crashes that some people experienced.
- Some improvements to .mov downloader"
Does this really necessitate an exclamation mark in the title? - nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
- Vortech89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"quick time SUCKS! it ***** install iTunes even if u dont want it. DIGG damn apple fanboys" - dvdcr
I swear, do you people even LOOK for a stand-alone installer? I'm guessing the answer to that is no. Look around (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html) and you should find the "QuickTime Standalone Installer". - tarun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Part of K-Lite Codec Pack.
The point is you can play mov files in the media player of your choice. You're not forced to use Apple's QT Player. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You people do know that there are keygens out there for the Quicktime Pro stuff, right? I mean, $30 is a bit silly just to play stuff full screen. The only real reason to buy QT Pro is if you're using it for actual authoring. Otherwise, just use the keygen and unlock the thing and get on with your life. QTAlternative is way more trouble than it's actually worth.
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg, but i don't hate the original Quicktime (except it nagging me to upgrade). What i do hate is Real Player, and FYI there's a "real alternative" too, that will play Real media, if you still play that crappy format.
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm, I think Ill try this since QT crashes my browser at some sites. I love Quicktime & Apple and all, but maybe this will help.
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im not sure i understand the point of having a quicktime alternative.
why bother? someone please explain - Koskun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unless they have chanced since the latest releast of Quicktime, you cannot go fullscreen with the free version, have to use the pay-pro version to watch content fullscreen. QT-Alternative allowed fullscreen. I had tried it also, and it did not run well so I uninstalled it.
As to Apple forcing you to get iTunes as well, as Hypersapien linked, it is easy to get Quicktime without iTunes, and that link is right on the same page of the full-bundled install. - schwarzwald, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1quicktime for windows is annoying because you can't install the latest version without also installing iTunes, which i have no interest in using.
i don't want to view media created in proprietary formats created by turtleneck-wearing *****. - fideli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No OS X version? Just kidding.
I think Quicktime experiences are vastly different between OS X and Windows. I never used Quicktime when I used Windows and despised it to death. Now that I use OS X, I use it quite a bit, at least for its native file-formats, and videos on the web. However, for most video, no matter how many plugins you try to get working for OS X Quicktime, VLC still takes the cake. - SuperNESnej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quicktime Alternative may be buggy, but it is the only way to play HD H.264 on a PC (the official QT is too slow on my computer to play HD smoothly)
- swalter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whats wrong with Quicktime? Why would I use this over it?
- orabox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im not sure i understand the point of having a quicktime alternative.
why bother? someone please explain
For me I use mainly Windows and Linux, with Windows you have a hard time keeping up with codec’s in the MS media player. MS media player is allot like its brothers in crime (Real Player, QuickTime) in their resource requirements they just seem to be getting larger and larger. I stopped playing with MS Media player and Real player and mainly use VLC which is a small app light on resources; unfortunately until now I would have to use QuickTime (Big App) to play some media types, not it looks like there is an alternative. Can’t wait to try it.
digg
FYI: I have nothing against Apple, Real or MS except the fact that they all keep adding features and bloating the applications. - FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I keep getting a solid green screen after the first few seconds of a .mov. Yanked QT reinstalled... iTunes, updated video drivers, still green sometimes. I'll have to try this one.

Right when I thought I've seen the height of grammatical nitpicking, I am surprised yet again. - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crashed and burned also
- Quint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0QT Pro Keys are pretty easy to find.
Why use a knockoff when you can steal the real thing? - DarkCastle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Eh. You can have QuickTime Pro for just $30 or use the free version. I'll just stick with the original, no digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It crashed and burned when I tried to play some of the trailers on Apple.com. Back to the real deal.
- tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg! Only because VLC doesn't always handle quicktime files.
Also, the 30 meg download of quicktime is 3x as big as my original harddrive. Talk about bloat. - republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't you just install the codec for MPC?
Awesome player! Digg++ - psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"QTAlternative is way more trouble than it's actually worth."
Elaborate. What exactly is this trouble that you are referring to? I haven't experienced a single problem with my QTAlternative install. - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This thing is cool. Finally I can play QT movies externally and have better controls then embedded in browser without digging throught Page Info or View Source.
- Pile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Quicktime is a virus on the PC platform. I welcome any alternative to that annoyware crap that has to be continually updated to continue to function, and spies on you and installs unnecessary agents that start upon boot.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0psyonide: "I haven't experienced a single problem with my QTAlternative install."
You are aware that you're not the only person in the world, correct? Other people here have already posted that they have had problems with QTAlternative, such as failure to play files, green screens, etc. Some people even have crashes and such from it.
You had no problems? Bully for you then. Other people have. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But then onto the install. "The setup files are corrupted".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gee, now the link works...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The link leads to some downloads, but not what i was looking for. Oh well, i don't care.
- psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One tip: It is reccomended that you uninstall Quicktime or any previous versions of Quicktime Alternative on your computer BEFORE you attempt to install Quicktime Alternative.
Your install will be more stable if you do this. - antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ (my preveious post)
wtf? there is a direct link here at apple.. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
no itunes needed... why is everyone bitching, took me 2 seconds to search (after my first search and post above)...... - nextsteposx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how can Quicktime standalone installer be bloat?
REAL player and windows player are 10 times more bloat, with their media guides, library etc etc.
Quicktime is the only left mainstream player that is only for playing content, unlike real and windows media player. - BunkerHill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One reason I want this is because QT is a system hog that wants to start every time I start the computer. Who needs that?
And another thing, this stand alone QT version isn't the default option when you go looking to install QT. This is same type of tactic that made people hate Microsoft but yet when Apple does it all the fan boys are OK with that. Can someone explain that?
FYI I'm OS agnostic. Owner of OSx and XP. - nextsteposx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please who think Quicktime is a bloat, are newbies and old people.
- tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please stop the "why do we need an alternative" stuff. Alternative products introduce competition into a marketplace and when there's more competition, the consumer benefits. Even if you're a dedicated Apple fan, the mere existence of alternative products has a positive effect on the quality of Apple's products.
QT Alternative, I salute you! - theLimit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just wish I could find a torrent for the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does this really necessitate an exclamation mark in the title?"
'Right when I thought I've seen the height of grammatical nitpicking, I am surprised yet again.'
Uhh, he wasn't nitpicking. He was saying that the new version of QT Alt only added a few minor things, so why the excitement (the exclamation point), or even the digg in the first place. QT Alt has been around a long time. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> nextsteposx wrote: "Please who think Quicktime is a bloat, are newbies and old people."
As you probably already know, QuickTime is BOTH a Content Creation architecture AND a Content Delivery architecture. Because of this fact, no doubt QuickTime does contain code that many people will never use. In all fairness, under these circumstances, it might be fair to think of QuickTime as bloated if all a person wants to do is view content.
Having written this, however, for content creators QuickTime has depth that can't be matched. And on the Mac it is very stable. From time-to-time I hear some PC users swear that they will never install QuickTime on their computers. I have QuickTime installed on my PC and have never had any problems with it. Is it not stable on PCs (now that it's out of beta, that is) or are there simply some Window's fanboys that can't stand the thought of Apple software on their machines?
PS Before someone points out that they don't have QuickTime Pro installed (which is required to create content), please note that plain old QuickTime contains all the "Pro" code. It's entering the special registration key (which runs $30) that activates the extra functionality. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Remember, if you want to download previous releases of Quicktime that are less bloated, head over to oldversion.com. Because newer is not always better!
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+01. I agree, Apple is being stupid linking iTunes to QT install. Just the kind of behavior that made people love MS.
2. Flash video is the best cross-standard on the web. You have QT, you have WM, you have Real -- but everybody with a web browser has flash.
3. I have a Mac. I have Flip4Mac installed because the player that MS makes for the Mac sucks so bad. That lets me use the QT player all the time. It confuses some sites, but I can also convert a file to pure QT, and it works well. - antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I wonder if this direct link version if full of spyware/virus?
Seems to try and claok a apple.com link.
