- blakholephysics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know none of you use firefox on a mac, but with the time machine coming out...
Seriously though. There should be some easy automatic backup programs out there. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That’s great and all… But you can also go to your user folder > application data > and make a copy of the Mozilla folder that resides there.
- Spanktacular, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Y'all are making it far more complicated than it needs to be. The method suggested by Tobey, is the same method you would use to transfer your profile to Portable FireFox. You don't need a special tool when a simple folder copy accomplishes the task...
- kevin.gc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I could have used this a couple weeks back when firefox decided to eat my bookmarks.
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used to use MozBackup but the developer quit working on it a long time ago.
I've used BackupFox ever since and it's been great. It even backs up Thunderbird. I've backed up and restored with it several times with our incident.
Great little program. - motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bah....."back's up". Sorry for the lame grammar. :-D
- nerdbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^The "*.firefox" file it made is 29.4MB. That seems rather large considering I only have a couple extensions and a few bookmarks.
I just created a reinstalled firefox and added 18 extensions, did the back up, and the file was only 5.5 megs.....
I think this would be more useful on a fresh install. - motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BackupFox isn't about backing up your bookmarks. It back's up ALL settings. Ditto for Thunderbird.
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bookmark Backup for Firefox is another nice extension to back all your stuff up. http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/more-info/bookmarkbackup
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nix that, I just checked the MozBackup page and he's developing the tool again.
- Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, why do you need an extension to back up your bookmarks?!
Seriously, its allready built into Firefox, just go to Bookmarks-->ManageBookmarks-->File-->Export.
Thats it, makes an HTML file which, firefox can import back into another FF install. (You can also open the HTML file like any other, and click blue text links) - priapos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dont use crashed firefox
- dstart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0MozBackup http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com
This is far superior as it can backup Thunderbird also. - elfguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hope you guys realize that firefox doesn't "make bookmarks disapear". It's just a little known feature called profiles, with the default one being unavailable if firefox doesnt close properly, making firefox offer you to create a new one, hence having empty bookmarks and settings. The fix is simple and is described on the mozillazine forums.
- n4cr2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I second Bookmark backup for firefox.
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Another vote for MozBackup. Excellent and simple tool.
- doofus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I've had to reset my profile a couple of times. If firefox didn't the currupt the user's profile in the first place then we wouldn't be needing to back it up at all.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Regaruding kjartan's comments: it probably backed up your cache files too which is can get huge.
Regarding lost bookmarks and such...try http://www.myhq.com It's a free online bookmarking site and I use it all the time since I'm always at various offices, etc. - MrZop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ya, i've had my FF ***** up on me a couple times. lost all my bookmarks and profile stuff. and yes, I know its gone.
I can now install, tweak, customize, plugin, extention, bookmark a fresh copy of FF within 15 minutes. Sad, but its True. - kjartan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The "*.firefox" file it made is 29.4MB. That seems rather large considering I only have a couple extensions and a few bookmarks.
- Spanktacular, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0del.icio.us? It's great for what it is, but without that spreadsheet to archive it on my workstation locally, I'd be at the mercy of del.icio.us's server uptime.
- disord3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Is it common to have to religiously back up your stuff like that? Seems like a bit of a pain in the ass.
- navjotjsingh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hey this tool did not even run for me! Can anybody suggest why it happened??
- dawks-, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is pretty lame.. Its like a GUI for XCopy.
Really, just save the folder "C:Documents and SettingsUserApplication DataMozilla"
I've been backing mine up since May 04.. I have all my history (35megs worth), cookies, and such saved. It rawks.
I compress that folder once a week and upload it to my Gmail account for backup purposes. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yes, I don’t trust that program. Like I said, just copy the Mozilla folder that’s in the application data folder. It shouldn’t be bigger than 5 Megs.
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0what do other digg users think of del.icio.us for online bookmarking?
- Endpoint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0In the past I've used MosBackup (which also does Thunderbird). http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/ It does a good job in backing up everything including the password file so I'd be loathed to try another product which is supposed to do the same thing.
