- rastan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Fantastic! And what a great name. Is your server busted? Excuse me, I need to use the PortaPutty.
- odyss3y, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13someone read my mind, i was just about to look for something like this. i got a usb thumb drive that runs off my finger print.
- adderx99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9here's a recently released development website centered around portable/ USB apps, it probably deserves its own digg.
http://portableapps.com/
here's a link to their puTTY solution:
http://portableapps.com/node/1134 - DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Isn't it interesting that the submitter is already scanning through the comments, modding down anything that disagrees with him!
- AWBoy666, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Shame really that people don't take the time to read what's posted. There's good information in stuff like that.
Link to original: http://digg.com/software/Wikipedia_s_List_Of_Portable_Applications_For_Your_USB_Drive_ - DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Yeah, great, this was front page on digg yesterday in the "wikipedia list of apps that work of an thumb drive" and today some lamer has submitted them all as individual stories. Don't get me wrong - putty is great, it's this digg submission that's lame.
- Ouroboros, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Is Mobility PuTTY a UPX repack?
- skit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Had this working a while ago using a simple batch script. There's functionality in puTTy to clean all trace. Just a matter of loading and unloading registry enteries on top of that.
http://skit.id.au/geek/2004/12/18/portable-ssh-using-putty/ - nucleocide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've had a puTTY client using ini files for configuration on my USB drive for at least 2 months now.
- AWBoy666, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Naturally, the link doesn't work already.....
- Schrade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here's a mirror of PortaPuTTY: http://appguides.googlepages.com/portaputty.zip
Fortunately I was able to snag a copy of it using wget. The server was pretty damn slow! - swaxhog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There's a "list of USB" apps submission on Digg every other day. I Digg this story because it's actually a usefull new version and the title and description are easily understood.
- RobLoach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Old news, actually. It's been out for quite a while. Great application, though.
- bek99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Sure there is. The info described above still requires registry access. The whole idea of porta-putty is to NOT access the registry.
- klang, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4In the documentation for PuTTY, Simon Tatham outlines a method for making a configuration file.
http://putty.hostingzero.com/0.58/htmldoc/Chapter4.html#config-file
There is no reason for Porta PuTTY, let alone a beta of Porta PuTTY ..
Besides .. where are the RSA or DSA signatures ... a hacked version of a ssh client is asking for problems.. - klang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you don't .. unless you check the code .. and if you are like me, you woun't..
Check my comment above for an alternative. - mmastrac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've got a better portable putty version that saves fonts and colors properly:
http://www.grack.com/blog/articles/2006/08/31/portable-putty-0-58 - DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4AWBoy666: that's specifically what I'm talking about.
- metalrock76, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This should do, since that link is down.
Mobility PuTTY
This is a redistribution of PortaPuTTY, and is beta software. We're simply recompressed the PortaPuTTY files to reduce size be more than 50%.
http://mobility.shaneland.co.uk/files/mobility-putty-beta1.zip
from http://mobility.shaneland.co.uk/lab.html - Genius16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2SWEET! Now if only someone would convince microsoft to put commonly used useful tools in their operating system so i wouldnt have to use this!
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I was thinking of a portable SSH client :)
- gsmithEIDW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Well thats good for you...so have I. I was able to achieve the same effects with some batch files to add and remove details from the registry as I migrated from machine to machine, but portaputty is exceptionally useful for a lot of people and I reckon it deserves more publicity.
- jaderobbins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You guys keep whining about dupe stories all the time, but digg is a distributed journalism site. Therefore, it looks like a bunch of people didn't see the wikipedia story and found this one to be cool and "dugg" it. Don't chew out people just because they aren't always glued to digg all day.
- mooseblaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've put up a UK mirror for anyone who's interested: http://www.termisoc.org/portaputty.zip
- section31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dugg this too soon. The profile saving feature isn't working all that good. It didn't save my colors or font sizes.
- bfordham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you come from here the portaputty page, it's gonna go to the ack page. Sorry, my wee little server was just overloaded.
Binary Torrent: http://socialistsushi.com/portaputty.zip.torrent
I'll do away with the redirect once things calm down a bit. - bfordham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You don't. Muhahahaha. So if you're nervous, download, examine, and compile the source.
- bfordham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hey, I'm happy to provide a digital sig on the binaries if you want. But a signed hacked version wouldn't be much better, I think.
- gsmithEIDW, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes but I'm surprised to find how many clued-in people I know haven't yet come accross this yet. In this instance, I'd be inclined to turn a blind eye to some duplication. After all leaving your ssh details behind you on a pc is a potential security issue as well as considering the convenience of this application.
- steje, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0For those of you nay-saying the benefit of file based session and config settings... and then linking to the putty doc pages that describe loading and unloading of reg settings... these are NOT the same things. Some of you are probably aware of the portable apps movement supported by standards like U3 and such... some of us may find ourselves needing to work from a PC where we will not have admin rights that will allow us to modify the registry, but from which we might still need to run apps like PuTTY.
- sheik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Brilliant idea my friend, I've been using putty on my thumb drive for months now, entering the info every time I started it up
- Perc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm digging this just because of the name :)
- crossers, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0ok, thanks for article, but I think it's not new!

http://www.chasr.org/ - SiliconError, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0With the new PuTTY Tray
http://www.xs4all.nl/~whaa/putty/
you can choose if you want to save to the registry or in files. On top of that it also supports URL hyperlinking, transparency and minimizing to tray with a (custom) tray icon. - styleismylife, on 07/25/2009, -0/+0putty rullez
http://binhot.ru - emag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There's a mirror set up at http://www.gurski.org/mirror/socialistsushi.com/ack.html (most diggers will probably automatically be redirected to the coralcache that my server automatically directs to with certain referers).
And yes, I've been IMing with the guy who runs socialistsushi.com, from about the time I woke up and saw he was on digg. - emag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There's now a static page at http://socialistsushi.com/ack.html with links to torrents. But consider using CoralCache at http://socialistsushi.com.nyud.net:8080/ack.html
- kefland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does this let you preserve your window settings? i hate the default colors/font/dimensions for putty.
- masskurec, on 03/04/2009, -0/+0putty is the best
http://xptweak.net - MrMuskrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did something similar in February '04. http://use.perl.org/~Mr.+Muskrat/journal/17451
- samstr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Is this application on the Wikipedia Portable Apps link that was dugg recently?
-------------------------------
http://www.wirah.com - durex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Sooo old. (but great application nonetheless)
- QpoX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i've been using portaputty for some time now and i love it...
Just so easy to use and the run :) - alpinekarst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There is also the -noRegistry option in Tunnellier by BitVise. It works great & is free for individual use but its closed source.
http://www.bitvise.com/tunnelier.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why can't I get get cadence to run through putty? I wish this was possible.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How can you tell?
- lightcycler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How do you know this copy hasn't been tampered with?
- Claymore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2No... it's really not that interesting.
- lockdown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I've been doing this for a few years (more than 3) now. It's all documented at http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.58/htmldoc/Chapter4.html#config-file
Sorry, but no digg. - jswensson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Funny name. :)
