- Boing, on 10/10/2007, -5/+466I thought it was already for free online. Oh, wait...
- Danikar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+134I bet a lot less people would steal it if they did that =D. Good for them!
- platypibri, on 10/10/2007, -3/+83The GIMP is free and worth every penny. It's like taking a 350 horse power engine, putting it in a soap box racer, and asking Linus Torvalds to take it to Daytona and race Jeff Gordon. It has lots of power and potential with a UI designed by drunken retarded left handed monkeys. It's like a drum stick with a cordless drill handle. It's a pain to use. I WANT to love it DESPERATELY, but it just stinks. There. I said it. Let the hate begin.
- crackedplastic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+54Sigh. Direct link to source information: http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2007/09/photoshop_expre.html
- pixelfox, on 10/10/2007, -10/+57Maybe then the Gimp people will come over and realize, yes, Photoshop is better, and there is no shame in saying it. Just because it's free, doesn't make it better though...
- jwegan, on 10/10/2007, -19/+55I thought Adobe™ Photoshop® had been free for years, all you needed was an internet connection.
- CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -7/+351. Sign up at community college for class
2. Purchase heavily discounted software from the college bookstore, complete with DVDs, manuals and support
3. ??????
4. Get legal copy of software without getting reamed in the ass. - mrminty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28It's not free, you just "borrowed" it from a "friend on the internet".
- Yarnage, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29Mean spirited comment but I agree 100%. The GIMP's UI is absolute ***** and any designer worth his sale could make something much better.
- DoctorDuckey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23I doubt this will cut down stealing CS by much--if it's online, it will probably be pretty slow and cut down in features. Plus, some people can't be connected to the internet all the time.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26When Apple does it, it's innovation. When anyone else does it, it's a gimmick.
- Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20which will ensure that it remains the photo editing standard.
- Gavagai80, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14So basically you use your pirated copy for things that lots of free image editors could easily do. And now you'll be happy to use some website to do the menial things that krita/gimp/xara/etc could do faster. That makes a lot of sense.
- elfofdoriath9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Yes, I know Photoshop's better, but *looks in wallet* *finds dust*
- theOster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13i agree as well, but the fact that it's open - doesn't that mean that any one can develop a better interface? i mean, haven't people been bitching about the interface for over a decade now? and NO ONE has stepped up??
- Puppetfunk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14But in the end 3/4 of all copies of Photoshop will be pirated.
- GrandBreton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12That joke wasn't made already.
- mistergoomba, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11i agree as well. i wanted to love it, but it's nowhere near competition for photoshop.
- AttackingHobo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Ewww, its flashed based. I like flash (I am a flash developer) but editing photos in flash, no thanks, I would rather learn The Gimp.
- falcon707, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Have you guys even read the article? The screenshot looks NOTHING like the Photoshop we use!
http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/images/psx_screenshot.jpg - asurroca, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It's probably higher than the total number of people running Linux...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8if you paid for windows it's not =P
- kingkilr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Urgh, I didn't actually mean ajax is a gimmick. I'm a web developer.
Good god. - elfofdoriath9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Dugg down for saying "lawl"
- chicoer2001, on 10/10/2007, -6/+12Looks like photoshop lite. Nothing new than what any computer comes with preinstalled.
- DarkMeld, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Flex is just flash with pretty built in effects
- RobArtLyn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The educational version is eligible for the standard upgrades. I started in school with PS 7 at a heavy student discount. I got the software and a full semester of instruction for a fraction of the full retail price. I then upgraded to CS directly from Adobe and CS2 when that came out and I still haven't spent as much as one full retail license. All fully legit with Adobe's blessing.
- saleem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6"some people can't be connected to the internet all the time."
Yeah, my 56K connection can only handle so much air-time - coolbru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Hm, but all too often in Linux, because we have the ability to change it, all too often we need to waste time changing it, rather than using it. Those who need to use photoshop or GIMP are usually not those with the ability to do anything about it.
I ran into problems with inkscape, which often gets hyped much as GIMP does, but in using it, I found that its save as and PDF export were completely broken, rendering it useless overall. Illustrator is just in a different league. - xShad0w, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Depends on how much they take out being that it's "express" and all
- cmcarson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Um.... I still would.
- Meatetarian, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5That's a great call on Adobe's part. They're the big guys in photo editing and this will pretty much take care of competitors.
I'm still happy with the GIMP, though! - Ben174, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5It's nothing like Photoshop. Looks less functional than the photo tools that are bundled with Windows.
- iFungus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Oh really? Retard.
- norbiu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5You forgot the ®.
- rip747, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4no offense but this thing looks very (how should I put this) amateurish. Yeah it would be great for quickly editing pictures for mom and pop (which I think is their target audience here), but for real photo editing either use paint.net (windows: http://www.getpaint.net) or gimp (linux and windows: http://www.gimp.org)
- fkuall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4*looks at TPB* *finds photoshop*
- Yarnage, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You're an idiot. Flex isn't "new" technology. It's ONLY a new development environment that outputs the same Flash movies as Adobe's Flash application.
- Deived, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4This is nice and all... but when will Adobe support Linux?
- Halgy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3About the same time EA will.
- platypibri, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I can't code. I'm sorry. But I'm sure myself, and tons of other artists, designers, and photographers would love to sit down with a coder and help them hammer out a UI we can use. I'm not talking about pretty icons. My biggest problem with The GIMP is finding what I use most, and a close second is screen real estate. I have no real loalty to Adobe. They just seem to understand what i need to get my work done. Some of that is learning curve stuff, but most of it is that Adobe thinks long and hard about how artists use computers. And that, after all, is the target audience.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I dont think the target audience here is people who steal Photoshop, I think the Photoshop name is just being used to draw attention to a free online tool. Great to see free tools though, that is if you dont already have Photoshop
- anagoge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I like your similies.
- anagoge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3If MS Paint can do what this can, I'm looking at the wrong menu.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well it's Free Softare so that's possible.
- platypibri, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's not intended to be a pro tool. They already make a pro tool.
- mmmiiikkkeee, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4after you leave school you have to uninstall that software... legally.....
- skyfire1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The only people that pay for photoshop are commercial game developers.
- hcarlens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Looks more like a competitor for picasa than a replacement for photoshop to me.
