Webmasters: DO NOT link to these files directly. Instead, provide a link to this download page. Otherwise our site gets flooded and download speeds drop to intolerable levels. Thank you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30said it before, I'll say it again, this is hands down the best free image program you can get, GIMP doesn't even hold a candle to it
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Works 100% - on Vista.
- PueSi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Pain.NET is great, it's great for quick things like resizing a picture or to doodle, even some retouching of photographs. It loads really fast!
- zeptobyte, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18I love Paint.NET because it was originally started at my school.
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14anything free software that will keep Adobe on its tippy toes is good to me. gotta make sure those bastards don't get lazy on us and rebranding photoshop and hocking it at absurd prices
- g000gle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I can't get over the small size, and the speed of this program, it's awesome!
- joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12how the hell is it smoke and mirror you idiot? that's the whole point of .NET, what do you want them to do? ship the framework with each program?
- spillz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13And I needed to know this because?
Anyway... I love paint.net. You all should definitely try it. - adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Its speed is a testament to the awesomeness of .NET :-)
- BRSQUIRRL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There seems to be a lot of confusion about Paint.NET: What it is:
* An alternative to Windows Paint, including a lot of features (like layers, effects, adjustments) that Paint does not have while still remaining lightweight and easy to use.
* A proof-of-concept to demonstrate the capabilities of a .NET application.
What it is NOT:
* It was NEVER intended to compete with Photoshop (or even GIMP) in terms of functionality. - Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If you have consumer-level photo-retouching needs, i.e. color balancing, cropping, fun with masking, etc., a tool like this should work fine for you, with a few extra niceties, like some basic filters, built in. If you have professional-level requirements, (CMYK support, HDR (16-bit color) support, camera RAW support, non-destructive layer editing, extensive filter library), it's still not going to replace Photoshop. Also, while Photoshop will run on Windows 2000, Paint.NET has, for some reason, dropped this support. Rather an odd choice, but perhaps it's a limitation of programmer resources or the programming architecture itself (perhaps .NET and Windows 2000 don't play well together.)
- diggimator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If you have to shell out more than $200 USD for Parallels and Windows XP, that sort of kills the merit of using a "free" app, doesn't it?
- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah, but I can use Paint.NET without deciphering the UI-rubric-of-the-day from Adobe or the right-click-on-pixel-4378-to-access-feature-312 nightmare of GIMP.
- diggimator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Released on December 23rd, 2006"
- ccaazz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10wooooooo GO PAINT.NET!!!
okay, that was moronic. - captjc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10w00t
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oooh, sooo bad. God forbid a program utilize an Internet connection.
- jgjay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5*Sigh*... I repeat... Mono: http://www.mono-project.com/
Some .NET applications can already be run on Linux. - sorriso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Paint.NET is the best free paint application for Windows hands down. That and Rick Brewster is a sexy bitch.
- jayscottgold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As a Mac convert for about a year now, Paint.NET is the only thing I miss about Windows. I like it better than the Gimp and I don't need anything as powerful as Photoshop. I guess when I get an Intel powered Mac, I can run Paint.NET again through Parallels.
- sbovisjb1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Paints the best. Good for doodling, resizing, or just messing around. And it has been proven you can do some serious art in it.
- jgjay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Mono: http://www.mono-project.com/
- bamiller3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Whether it was intended to or not, it clearly competes with both. Especially GIMP.
- NoBullet2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've tried a lot of free paint programs and this one is easily the best. The interface is incredibly user friendly.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For someone like me who won't use all the features in PS Paint.net is just awesome.
Their text and colour implementation still really sucks bad. - codyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Haven't really messed with it yet but I clicked check for updates and beta3 was found and it installed fine, thus so far so good
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@captjc
Regardless of what the GIMP aims to do, the facts are plain and simple. The 'GIMP' is utterly *****. Much like most of GTK+ in fact, and I'd use almost anything instead of it. - zeras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Out of all the tools I've used, This is simple and does not take forever to load up or takes
up lot of resource, plus it is easy to adapt too. - e144539, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Both of the links point to Betanews and they use cachefly.net, the info must be outdated. I'm sure their servers can handle it.
http://www.cachefly.net/demo.html - Hootyea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He said, releaved.
Not revealed, releaved.
So sure, it was releaved Jan 1, 0012. - bamiller3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ ImTheDarkcyde
I agree. I just wish they would do a port of this for OS X. I can't stand to use GIMP on OS X and don't want to pay for Photoshop for what I would use it for. I LOVE that they finally added a gradient tool in this version. My absolute favorite free app. - yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GIMP vs Paint.NET in three... two.... one....
- skizatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mmm 64-bit Paint.NET
- troopa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Paint.NET is great, but nothing beats Gimpshop for free digital image editing in my opinion.
- williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does it run on Mono?
- urlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it won't replace Photoshop yet its great for quick and powerful "laptop" level gfx tool. using it since 1.0 ver, digg to support good project
- vurdalak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually I like my photoshop cs but my daughter uses only subj
- jayscottgold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good point
- skizatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's called checking for updates ....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The problem with porting Paint.NET to linux is that it makes heavy use of P/Invoke to specific MS Windows libraries. They broke their application's platform neutrality for performance issues.
Miguel De Icaza, of mono fame, was actually able to port it to linux a while back as a test... but I don't think it's being maintained. - untoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2love paint.net... but 3.0 wont install on win2k damn artificial obsolescence
- stockjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow pretty impressive. It amazes me with how long java has been around it cant match the things I see built on C#.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Mono! Miguel de Icaza projects for the win!
Seriously, that guy is a god. - DuNuNuBatman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5It is a .Net application. I doubt it will be ported any time soon.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I love the word w00t. It's become a part of my everyday language.
Seriously, this morning when opening my Xmas presents, I told my mom "woot".
She laughed so much. - Hootyea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1... Pay for Photoshop?
- e144539, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I suspect Microsoft pressured them into dropping support for Windows 2000, since they sponsor this project.
- dcab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Mono ftw. F-Spot is written in Mono/C#, and that's (IMHO) the best image organizer out there. Better than Picasa, even (which I never really "got"... I don't know why, I just never liked it much.)
