- wmoisis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+80Good on Opera. They have a really good, feature packed (but very under-rated) browser.
Now I just can't wait for the Opera broswer on the Nintendo DS :) - gookie, on 10/12/2007, -9/+83LoL! Bloat?
Opera Installation Out-of-the-box:
- IRC client
- Mail
- Widget support
- Bittorrent
- FF-like Extensions
- Smaller Installation File than FIrefox (~5 mb)
- No Memory Leaking
- Fast Rendering
Firefox Default Installation
- Installer is 8 mb
- No IRC client
- No Bittorrent
- No Widget
- No Extension
- Memory Hog
- Tweak it to death to make the rendering fast
- To go par with Opera features you have to install loads of extensions.....
....AND THAT IS WHAT I CALL BLOAT!!!! - wmoisis, on 10/12/2007, -5/+62At least there is one thing we can all agree on: Anything is better than IE.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44Bloat is being bound to memory-leaking FF extensions which stop working with every new .x FF release.
Btw, ever tried Opera? Even after months of usage it's snappier than a fresh Firefox installation. - palexander, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34By far the fastest browser I've used on Windows. Just wish it had the extension support that Firefox does.
Just in case: torrent downloads
Windows:

And the normal download page which allows you to select a download site: http://www.opera.com/download/
Enjoy! - dodd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28yes it can, but you have to manually add rule:
http://*.googlesyndication.com/pagead/* - extremus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Opera has the least memory footprint compared to IE and Firefox, BT support makes it even better. Nice release time too, coincides with Windows Live messenger. Nice strategy to compete with Microsoft's hold on the internet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Havent honestly used Opera since V.1.0 (10 years ago?) I do remember how fast it loaded and how few system reasources it used...
I'll give it a try, Firefox is just too slow these days and doesnt seem to really be do much more than playing the part of the "not IE browser". - DagMX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26to Ryuuzaki
I'd hardly call it bloat. Even with tons of features it still maintains a very small installation file and the program itself never really slows down. - Jakub81, on 10/12/2007, -11/+35I would say Firefox looks like IE 6 with tabs and IE 7 looks a bit like Opera 8. Opera 9 looks almost the same as Opera 8.
- fletchtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24It also appears to pass the ACID 2 test!
http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html
Does this make it the first (commercially available/released) web browser to do it? - dirtyfratboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Yes!!! I can finally get embedded videos to work! No more going to IE... bleh.
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Just dont use them then. Even with all the EXTRA features, it's still smaller, faster, snappier than your bare Firefox.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Umm, i've used Opera since 6.0 and I have never had any trouble playing embedded videos.
- superjoppe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Opera runs DAMN good on my fathers 350mhz with windows nt. And concidering all the features of Opera, I can both chat in irc, email, browse the web and seed torrents. It feels like I have a 2ghz machine.
Firefox on the other hand, slooooooow. I tried both on that computer and on my mac and it runs like butter. - PaiTrakt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18As far as I know, yes. If I'm not mistaken, Safari/Konqueror still displays the scrollbar, which it's not supposed to do.
I've used Opera since version 7 was out, and I've never looked back. Tried sticking to Firefrox several times, but Opera is just so much better. Although there are some extentions I'd like to see in Opera as well, such as the browser sync-thingie from Google and the Webdeveloper extention.
I know about the community project-like Opera sync, but I've never got it to work. - Jakelshark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18heres the link for Linux downloads
http://opera.com/download/?platform=linux - SiLeNtHuNtER, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23BitTorrent.!!! Special Vote for this..!!!
- nontroppo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15opera is pretty smart here. features that are not used are not initialised. so by default you just get a browser, then if YOU choose to make a mail account, the mail module initialises but it is not "loaded" by default at all. bittorrent is just another download format and widgets are just web pages without chrome.
- PopeOfDope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16You can turn it off easily anyway. Just type in opera:config in the address bar and you get lots of options to cut out what you don't need.
- IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Can the content block feature block Adsense ads?
- affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Want to Try Opera 9 without installing or want it on you usb drive
Opera 9 Potable
http://www.kejut.com/operaportable - rctech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14You can change the default skin you know.
Anyway, for those who are tired in shifting through hundreds of skins, here is the best skin in opera and it should have been the default skin to make it more stand out of the crowd. Copy and paste the address below.
http://my.opera.com/community/customize/comments.dml?id=1544 - newbietheatre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm running it now and i'm pleased to see that Digg is finally displaying properly. Nice.
- timpkmn89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Any major changes since the second beta? I especially would like to know if, by any chance, they changed the widget system back to the way it was in the first beta.
EDIT: Nope on the widgets :/
I was actually able to download it, install it, run it, and test that before the edit time ran out... Didn't expect that. - Jakub81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@mookieXL
Opera had undo close tab long before Firefox existed, Opera 9 has AdBlock (right mouse click >> Block content...), fasterfox mostly enable things that are enabled in Opera by default (placebo effect?), I don't know what is repagination. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10 Geterix Opera v1.0 wasnt ever made public. Opera v2 was it's first public release. I havent been able to locate any working copies ot Mult Torg Opera
apavluc Opera is modular. The features that you dont like wont interfare. Also it is very small and uses less memory (compared to fx 1.5) over here. So there is no reason to be complaining. - pornel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It does for me (I haven't used it much though). Just skip warning requester.
- JohnDGeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12what extensions would you want to add to Opera? Most of the popular ones are already built in and with the ability to customize the UI, add panels, and add CSS to websites it's way more powerful then IE or FF.
- JohnDGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It asks if you want to use it as default.
- Skeksis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Once you configure everything, get a good look and feel for Opera you just might find that you like it better than FF. Definitely worth a shot for those wondering whether or not to try it. I've been using Opera 9 since its first BETA and the results from release to release are amazing.
- Devz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9it's the first in WINDOWS to pass the acid2 test.
opera also had the first mobile phone browser that passes the acid2 test - psxman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11dooraque, whether or not something passes a test isn't a matter of opinion.
- rctech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Live bookmarks? It reads rss feeds and informs you when a new item is added to the feed. Look under the "Feeds" menu item.
Tip: "Ctrl + Shift + A" will mark all Unread items to Read while viewing a feed. - Jakub81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Press Ctrl Alt Z or click the Trash icon on the right side of the page bar - it holds all closed pages. About repagination, I'm not sure if it's the same but you can right click a tab and choose "create linked" - all links from the tab will open in the second "linked" tab.
- atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10only images I think
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm gona give it another go, firefox slows down with many pages open. I've only got a few extentions installed.
- mookieXL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Thanks. Now it really looks like valid competition for firefox. I'll keep it :)
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8No, and why should it be?
- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Uh... Opera's from Norway.
- pornel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It does support RSS (and Atom now), but in a different way (some find it better).
If you don't like it, you can turn any web RSS reader into Sage-like panel - just drag'n'drop it on sidebar buttons. - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Opera is a cool browser with oodles better memory management than Firefox (the FF team really need to get on top of this). The only thing I have found is the difficulty in intergrading mutimedia stuff with it (especially in Linux). Now if a version of Opera ever included it's own embedded mutimedia app - it really would totally rock and I would probably switch forever...
- anvil, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Google Calendar still doesn´t work.. :( But I still prefer Opera...
- Wickerman392, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Maybe if you werent using BT on dialup it wouldnt be an issue. Just tried the new opera and its lightning fast as ever, and the bittorrent support is very welcome on a 400 mhz system i have for downloading purposes, since opera remains fairly responsive even if I am pushing it.(AKA have more than 2 windows open) Yeah I could change the WM and do some stuff to get that sob running better, but Bush could also stop being a jerk, and hes not about to do that.
- Jakub81, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8RMB >> Block content...
- peanutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6On Mac OS X, Opera uses the system spell checker. There is no need to install additional software.
You can install Aspell on other platforms http://www.opera.com/support/tutorials/opera/spellcheck/ - freelancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I doubt that !!! I have an AMD 64 3700, have 16 application running right now and I'm barley at 6%
On a lighter note ... how did you get the embeded video to work I haven't been able to do that, MSNBC.. - Fergy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Go to the options, turn off every thing in content, go to cookies, choose 'accept only cookies' and 'delete new cookies'
This will give you more silent readable webpages, a lot of privacy and for sites that need login cookies/javascript/flash etc. use the site manager to enable it for those sites. - LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Skab: the linux version is 8 megs
- Devz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5right click, "Block Content"
