- spiffytech, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39Hooray! I've been using the betas for several weeks and the speed dial doesn't look like much until you start using the Ctrl-# shortcuts to call your favorite pages. That's where it really shines. Congratulations to the Opera team for getting 9.2 out!
- Craga89, on 10/12/2007, -43/+7Speed dail... on a.... browser...

- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When you open a new tab/page you can add your favorite pages there, so rather than ctrl+n (or whatever you use), then go to the bookmarks, then look for your favorite page, you just press ctrl+n and then click on the page you want to go to.
- OneManArmy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6Here is an Mac OS X Opera skin

for those who want a more native look for Opera. - chowsapal, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I'll give Opera another try when there's an UNO skin for it...
- tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -34/+4Shortcuts are overrated.
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15With Opera making such strides in development, can we expect to see an accelerated roadmap for Opera Mini? I know they recently jumped to v3.0, but is it reasonable to see the next milestone very soon? I ask this although I don't use Opera on my desktop, Opera Mini is great for PalmOS.
- rmccabe916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Opera's next big plan is to have all of their browsers (desktop, mobile, Wii, etc.) interconnected with one another so you can have your settings saved wherever you are, such as bookmarks and hopefully RSS feeds as well. The next few versions of Opera for the desktop and Opera Mini are likely to be heading in that direction, and I expect a more accelerated pace as they are developed.
- tmahmood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2where is the 64 bit version for Linux?
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Great! I just hope the deadkeys work in the shared-qt version now.

- greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24It is possible, you know, to have both Firefox and Opera on one computer.
In fact, I'm downloading and installing Opera right now!

- jamesmar, on 10/12/2007, -26/+51Opera kicks ass. Why bother with anything else?
- justinx0r, on 10/12/2007, -76/+16Firefox.
- Copperhe4d, on 10/12/2007, -11/+61i use Firefox but i think that this "browser war" is really childish.
stupid geeks :/ - dancrew32, on 10/12/2007, -5/+120seriously... as long as we're not using explorer, we're on the same team.
- bmartin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17@jamesmar: You're ignorant. Each browser has its perks. I use Swiftfox at home and Firefox at work (stupid Windows). I use it for the same reason I use Fluxbox, Linux, Gentoo, etc. They're clean, fast, and modular. Opera is the KDE of browsers: full of buttons and lots of preferences. Opera has more functionality by default and Firefox has a ton of extensions. Some people like to go from the bottom up; others like their defaults set for them.
I'll promote anything decent (basically anything that's not IE). - fractured, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6No one cares what you use in reality.
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These browsers are all free. I use both Firefox and Opera, though admittedly Firefox is my main. (I prefer viewing some sites on Opera.) I don't see the point in choosing a side among the non-IE browsers. To me, it's no different than owning two or more different branded hammers that you keep in your tool box.
- psilanthropist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"Opera kicks ass. Why bother with anything else?"
Ads. I know about that lame "block content" ***** that Opera uses. it is nowhere near as good as adblock/adblock+. it only blocks out the image/flash leaving me with a blank sidebar and wasted screenspace. adblock+ just removes the whole sidebar.
opera is a good browser but i will stick to my Firefox until they have a decent adblocker.
- englishganxta, on 10/12/2007, -27/+1Word...Now wtf is this thing?
- desirecomplex, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Maybe this is why they pushed back the release of the wii brower? I expect that quickly to follow.
- venir, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14I am running 9.1 and when i click on "check for update" it tells me its the most current version. Needs an update apparently.
- Mindflux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@venir: same thing.
- venir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Perhaps we are the only two, considering I am being buried for stating I can't update through the browser itself.
- SwordAngel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Same
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I got the same thing so I just manually downloaded it. They're probably trying to just decrease the load on their servers...nothing to worry about.
- n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2same here. had to go to opera.com and get it.
- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've been a long time Opera fan, but their upgrade notification system really isn't that great. They really need to do something about it.

81.21.... - bmartin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Adult Swim's Fix now works in Firefox without an Active X control (it has for several months -- I imagine it works in Opera now, too). I can watch their cartoons in Firefox without opening Pandora's Box.
The only site I can't log into using a non-IE browser is one I use for work. The fact that I can't get into that site doesn't bother me one bit; in fact, it's worked as a great excuse on many occasions. Why do companies still hold IE up as a valid standard to design pages for when it doesn't even render CSS correctly?
Rather than IE adding things that Firefox is doing, why don't they try following the crowd instead of leading? There are a lot of good ideas out there and MS tries to destroy them to achieve vendor lock-in (e.g. Direct X vs. OpenGL). I'm glad some web sites have come to their senses. - yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Good to know what Opera is doing... their innovation coming to my Firefox browser soon!
- PaulRay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, Plbland was joking... Geez people, relax a bit.
I Love and use Opera and try to get everyone I know to use it.
But really, it is just a browser and it will never cure cancer.
Now, let's take a deep breath and...
FLAME ON!!!
- Visceral, on 10/12/2007, -22/+4Does their adblocking still suck when compared to FF? Last time I tried it, the adblocking was pretty laughable.
- playthev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I like both browsers but i actually find opera's adblocking more effective to be honest
- JurneyAhed, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1more effective? but doesn't opera download each ad before blocking it? that's the only thing that's kept me away from it.
- hcl40u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No it doesn't download the ad. Obviously it will download the ad before you block it but just try refreshing the page after blocking an ad and the ad should be blocked period.
- Viizkiz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Check this one!!! Digg on speed dial http://www.opera.com/img/products/desktop/screenshots/speeddial.jpg
- playthev, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7yeah but you also have myspace on it... bad digga
- wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27Opera is doing great! I just tried it out today for the first time, but I went back to Firefox. Opera is a great browser, but I couldn't get it to block Google and text ads, only Flash ads. If someone can tell me how to do this, I'd gladly try it again.
- wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21Why am I being dugg down? I just want to know how to do it because I couldn't figure it out. Looks like you don't want another Opera user.
- Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3Actually, this one issue stops me from using Opera: No ad blocker that works. I use Adblock Plus in Firefox. I'd probably use Opera if it had a usable ad blocker and a better extension model.
- rmccabe916, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Here's a tutorial that shows you how to block Google ads in Opera (don't mind the site though :P )
http://techgurls.blorc.com/2006/07/10/how-to-block-google-ads-in-opera-9/ - cninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Right click on the page, select "Block Content", choose "Details". Add "http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/*". Done
At least thats what works for me.
Edit:
Or read the above url - Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4WTF? Why are Opera fanboys digging me down simply because I pointed out that Opera doesn't have a good ad blocker? Are you so insecure that you digg down valid comments?

Because mac users are a bunch of pretentious, yuppy, elitist pseudo-intellectuals.
- kyhx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4The article's author scares me... I have seen him in my dreams and cursed his very existence as I just discovered it. On a more related note, I like opera. I use to like it for gallery browsing, the next button on my mouse would take me the next picture in the gallery. Excellent for rapid porn viewing. I used it for a long time till I switched to da firefox, maybe it's time for a renewed interest.

I really like Opera and it's my first choice, but appreciate the work that people have put in Firefox and don't mind using it frequently (which I do). As Copperhe4d said before, this fanboyism is really childish.

- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8I'm using Opera 9.2 right now and I like it, but it annoys me to no end that I can't middle-click on a bookmark to open it in a new tab. Shift-clicking just isn't as easy. I am also not a fan of the "Personal Bar" instead of a bookmarks toolbar.
Speed dial is rather cool, but in the end it amounts to little more than keyboard shortcuts for bookmarks except that it doesn't work on bookmarks because items in speed dial are added separately from every other bookmark.- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Instead of the bookmarks toolbar, you can drag URLs anywhere on the toolbars:
http://i10.tinypic.com/44a3hpi.png - silverSurfer84, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I think your settings are messed up cause I MMB to open a new tab. I dont remember changing anything to do so either.
- PaiTrakt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7He's talking about middle clicking on bookmarks, which he's entirely correct about not working as it should.
But Opera is my favorite browser nevertheless - se2131, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Tabs > uncheck "Reuse current tab"
Unless you want to use your current tab sometimes to go to a bookmark, and not other times, then I'm not sure how to do it. - LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Opera uses Qt for menus and stuff afaik... Qt on windows doesn't like right/middle click. On linux, I think right clicking works... with bookmarks I just shift click, but personal bar bookmarks work fine with middle clicking
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Instead of the bookmarks toolbar, you can drag URLs anywhere on the toolbars:
- thecosmicpope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Ok lets ignore the silly browser wars please. I love Opera and I use Firefox as a backup. I dont feel the need to go into Firefox pages and start a war, so please dont do it here, ok?
This latest update is lovely. Speed Dial is a great feature altho it took me a little while to get used to it. Another good setup forward. Now, give me better ad blocking and I'm in heaven! - HappyProgrammer, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6Does it work with Google services: Gmail, Google Maps, Google Calendar etc. ?
Last time I tried it, it did not. And that was a deal breaker. Oh and is there an equivalent to Firefox's Flash-block extension for Opera? I have really become accustomed to not seeing Flash animations. And I like it.- thecosmicpope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I use Opera with all of those you mentioned with no problem at all.
- gaervern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You do get warnings from Google calendar, which is annoying, but if you try, you can use Google calendar with Opera. What has Google against Opera, maybe that Opera uses yahoo as default search engine? Or, it may be the other way around, I just ask.
- psyno, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Changelog: http://www.opera.com/docs/changelogs/linux/920/
- n64man987, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3My issue with Opera is that it seems even more incompatible than firefox. I love the innovation that these companies are coming up with, but I'm sorry if I don't want to have backup browsers (Opera, then Firefox, then IE) for sites I need to visit. If Opera added some kind of IE Tab functionality I might consider tyring it again.
Are these incompatiblity issues still as big of a problem as they were with 9.0?
One last update....to give you an idea of the sites that break, I'm talking about my bank and work related sites.- gaervern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You need to have another browser in addition to Opera for some web-sites, but it is becoming less often necessary. My web-bank now has warnings against IE, not Opera. Either web-design is increasingly done by the book, or Opera has become more tolerant, or both.
- ckSubs, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4They NEED to fix a couple things with Opera before people will start using it. Stupid little things that should have a fix by now:
The tab bar is above the address bar. Yes, I know there are several "hacks" that let you switch the order. But it needs to be easy, or the IE/Firefox way from the start. You wouldn't believe how many people I've seen dismiss the whole browser just because of this.
Middle click auto scroll behavior in Opera is horrible. When you middle click to auto scroll, where ever you are on the screen, the cursor jumps to the center of the screen before it autoscrolls. People say it's useful, letting you scoll faster in every direction, but as far as I can see it's the ONLY situation where your mouse jumps like that. Ever. It needs to be changed, or at the very least have an option.
- aoyamamotoko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually, having it so you can't easily move the order of the toolbars, forcing the tabs to be above the address bar and nav buttons is one of the big stoppers for me. I know that their way is technically the correct way, but adding the ability to make it work the "wrong" way would be a good thing.
- Quaitemp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5move-tab-bar-above-address-bar-howto :P
http://nontroppo.org/-/media/mainbar.htm - ckSubs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Isn't that what I said? Opera has it above by default... they should make a SIMPLE option (or even drag and drop) to make the tab bar be more IE/Firefox like.
I don't know why I'm being dugg down... options are always good.
- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In Opera 8, on the default startup page, there was a link for switchers to go to that had browser setups and stuff, to make Opera feel like whatever other browser... not sure what happened with that.
http://home.concepts-ict.nl/~rijk/opera/huginmunin.html - Shadow2531, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The tab bar is above the address bar."
Minimize all your open tabs (ctrl+shift+F4). You will see that there's no address bar anywhere (below or above) the tab bar.
What you should understand is that each tab has its own, separate address field. This is a lot better than reusing one address field for all tabs. Remember, in Opera, you can size individual tabs inside the main window. For example, shift+F6 to tile vertically. You can also detach a tab by dragging it outside the window. In these situations, just one address field for all tabs would be annoying.
With that said though, it'd be nice if Opera came with an extra toolbar setup that looked like other browsers for those that are not comfortable customizing the toolbars. However, Opera's the way it is because its users like it that way.
- KnThrak, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0So far for me the only "real" differences between Firefox and Opera are extendability (
- Emperial, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Great browser. Opera all the way :D
- jrieth50, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Yes, but does it work w/ Ubuntu Feisty? Apparently the latest X11 packages broke Opera in linux, including 9.1 and 9.2 beta. I guess I'm on a wait and see.
- PaiTrakt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm not in Ubuntu right now, but from what I can read in the forums, Opera 9.2 fixed this issue.
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm coming to you live from Feisty + Opera 9.2. 9.2 works under Feisty, even though Opera doesn't list a Feisty-specific version.
- hyankov, on 10/12/2007, -17/+1Opera? You can't be serious.
- tinzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Upgraded earlier today. Love the shortcut function. Sadly, all the widgets aren't compatible yet.
- d0odx, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3Firefox rules!
- tastethevenom, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3It's all about extensions/add-ons. If Opera could somehow support or offer some porting method for current Firefox extensions, I would be all over Opera in a heartbeat.
In my experience, Opera is the fastest full-featured browser available. And maybe extensions/add-ons would be a huge bottleneck. But as a geek/power user, it's nearly impossible to work without at least 5 of my current Firefox extensions.- hcl40u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Opera already has most of the "extensions/addons" I need built in by default so for me there is little need for extensions.
- guinunez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3go to http://files.myopera.com/Rijk/blog/extensions.html and see if your favorite extentions are listed. Then use the equivalent feature on opera
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Awesome.
- fractured, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1digg down mistake
- nullvector, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Kinda sucks. It crashed within 30 seconds of using it.
Go to speed dial. Add www.hardocp.com as a website into one of the squares. It will ask you to download some SWF files. Hit Cancel. Boom, crash.- Blackforge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Works fine in Vista Ultimate 64-bit...
Not sure what the issue is, but you could try re-installing Shockwave. Flash 9 is the bane of IE7's existence. As 90% of the crashes for it always reference flash9b.ocx. Wouldn't surprise me if it was something similar with Shockwave. - Shadow2531, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FYI: I filed a report on this so it can be fixed.
- DrLaunch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can submit bugs at http://bugs.opera.com/wizard/
- Blackforge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Works fine in Vista Ultimate 64-bit...
- melat0nin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I just downloaded it for the craic, to see what it's like. I'm quite impressed, and the sliding Digg comments are far smoother on Opera than FF, for me. Still, it'll take a lot to convince me to move over permanently, but I'm willing to give it a go.
- charlienail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2speed dial makes my life! i love it, i've been waiting for it for so long. now i just have to change my habits a bit...
- Moskie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Added support for animated GIF images in skins."
oh goody! *barf*
(downloading now :D ) - 4ZERO1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sweet,. Still my #1 browser!
- Lick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Just for the fun of it, I'm going to try Opera 9.2 for a while. I'm a loyal Firefox user and I can't wait for Firefox3, but I do want to give other products a chance so wish me luck!
By the way, has anyone noticed that the Mozilla team actually focuses more on the webtechnical stuff like the speed and accuracy of their page rendering/javascript engines, whereas Opera has been trying to add more to the surfing experience with their widgets, accessibility options (voice commands, text-to-speech, mobile versions) and now speed dialing.
I might be wrong though, so please discuss.- PaiTrakt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you read the various Opera dev.blogs out there, you will quickly learn that Opera focuses very much on those things as well. But we won't be seeing many new web technologies in Opera before 9.5, mostly bug fixes and changes to various standards..
- Trusegutten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are some security fixes in 9.20, and I've experienced a few sites finally functioning properly (Google Reader for instance had some issues in 9.10). So there's work being done on the technical stuff.
- JohnDGeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I am an Opera Fan boy myself. I do think however the icon for Opera needs a revamp.
- melat0nin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Opera scrolling is smooth as butter, I like it much.
- ih8apple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I have been using Opera since it went ad-free, and I have just one question. Why doesn't this browser have a bigger market share? You would think that, especially among new users of the Internet, having all of the features you could ever possibly need (and they are stable), would attract the masses. What advantage does firefox have over opera? None, in my opinion.
- Yogurth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There are few reasons, imo. It was ad supported(though not in bad manner, it would dl few predefined banners once a week), it wasn't free, Opera co. is not a big or rich company and can't pay for 2 side ads in NY times, Time....for months :), the only way Opera spreads is through word of mouth(WOMM), it may be too feature rich for average surfer that is why most of the functions have been hidden from Opera 8.5 and upwards....
- JohnDGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The advantage over Opera to me is that Firefox is more like IE "out of the box" then Opera. Opera can be configured to look like IE and Firefox but it takes some time to get it all. I myself have recommended FF to the novice users because it is similar to what they use now. That means I don't get as many calls asking how to something or why did it do this when I made a mouse gesture. It also means the user isn't frustrated with the browser and swears it off altogether. So for me I use FF to train the novice and then upgrade them to Opera.
- riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmm, I am sticking with 9.10 for a while.. until I can get my bookmarks properly cleaned (since I plan to make a clean install for this one).
Of all the updates one thing they haven't still figured out is to make it easy for us to configure save and backup the interface setup so we don't have to go around doing it everytime the browser is freshly installed (no, installing in the same directory isn't 'fresh').
Anyways, still, Opera rocks and it's the fact.. been using it since 5.0 and browsing isn't fun when it's not on Opera.- Yogurth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All You need to backup is toolbar.ini from profile directory and You are set.
- riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks. I'll give it a try.
- LoXish, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4How hard would it be to write an extension for Firefox that gives the user "speed dial"-esque functionality?
If that is done, then this has nothing to offer me over Firefox. - sonofagunn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5These developer tools sound like something I could use - right now I only use Firefox for development reasons and Opera for general browsing.
Downloading now...
http://dev.opera.com/tools/ - SwordAngel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Speed Dial rocks! There are really only a handful of websites that I check on an hourly basis and having them in the Speed Dial proves to be immensely handy. I'm wondering why I have never thought about looking up or asking for a feature like this before. Suddenly it all makes sense when I pressed Ctrl-T and see this Speed Dial thing.
- quaff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4opera on mac needs faster start up times! 10-20secs on a 1.67ghz G4 is pretty bad.
- wbgo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Have they fixed the cookie handling yet? Either it's an utter sodding pain in the arse selecting from the dropdown every time or you choose "only from the site visited" and it breaks Yahoo! Mail and its ilk, as it treats subdomains as separate domains.
That makes Opera pretty much unusable for me.
Barring that, it's far and away the best browser on the market. - jaymulder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Anyone know how to change the SpeedDial seach engine? I would use it if I didn't have yahoo up there.
- rmccabe916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Tools > Preferences > Search Tab > Click on the search engine you want to change it to > Click Edit > Click Details > Tick the checkmark to change it to the Speed Dial search engine
- Lick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've just switched to Opera 9.2 from Firefox 2.0.0.3 (not permanently though), and I noticed that GMail and particularly GoogleReader perform much quicker in Opera. Like, MUCH, quicker.
I'm really missing the real-time spellchecker in Firefox though.- rmccabe916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Here's how to install an Ajax real-time spellchecker in Opera:

- radix33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Still no SOCKS support! But I'm using it anyway...
- sonyx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Who dares to surf porn with FF or IE? Not me. Opera for safe browsing!
