Cool, but at the same time this is fairly common, and already open-sourced as you can find API libraries for all of the major social networks in a lot of open-source web application frameworks. Rails for example has libraries (plugins) that support Flickr, Youtube, and Facebook for starters.
What im wondering about in particular is what this "social application server" is written in, and why would it be a better alternative to rolling your own social app and just using the API libraries at your disposal? - ellisgl, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Where's the tar bar? I see installers, which I don't want....
- mlugert, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2The apis are just client classes. While we do extend the ones you can commonly get for facebook, RoR, PHP, Java, etc... they are still just common api clients.
The key to the platform is that
1. It allows anyone to host their own social site
2. Deploy facebook apps to your own server and also or instead of facebook.
3. Integrate those apps with any website
Also if you have read through the tutorials
http://wiki.ringsidenetworks.com/display/ringside/ ...
you will see that you can actually create your own DSL, read FBML tags, and your own API calls. Using our Widget technology you can then render your FBML or App on any web site with some simple javascript. Allowing people to render fbml/dsl on their web site which is part of your app should have obvious benefits.
For instance you can charge these sites to integrate with your app. You will then own the social data that comes through your app which would allow for many things.
In short the Social Application Server opens up the entire web for social applications and has the potential to connect everyone via small social sites that don't even exist today and the large Internet islands such as facebook, myspace, Hi5, etc...
Hope that answer helps. - mlugert, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Without further details it seems like you are looking at something like drupal. Elgg seems fine too, though personally I like drupal because it has a very strong community, tons of plug-ins and is really well documented.
Ringside is actually meant to integrate with things like elgg and drupal. Everything in Ringside is an app and you can add/remove them as you please. Need profiles, Ringside has it, need app management, we have it, etc... Need blogging, need wiki? then use the tool appropriate and if you need socially aware apps and/or a platform for social then use Ringside in an integrated way.
Our road map is very full right now, but at some point we, or the appropriate communities, will be providing plug-ins to Ringside. - aladrin, on 03/28/2008, -1/+2If you're asking what language it's written in, it's PHP.
As for why you'd want it rolled into a platform... For the same reason anything else gets rolled into a platform: So you don't have to do all the nitty-gritty junk and can concentrate on making it do what you want.
Yes, sometimes it makes more sense to start from scratch. If you have a truly unique idea, that's probably the case.
But if you're Jeep (to steal an example from the site) then you probably just want to set up a social networking site and get on with life. Letting Ringside handle the basic software (fixes, upgrades, etc) is a money-saving decision. - control10, on 02/18/2009, -0/+1This is awesome, thanks for sharing that with us.
