- smojo12, on 10/12/2007, -3/+82 I have no problem with MS office, I used it for years and years without any problems but I'm not going to pay for it when there is a very good alternative that happens to be free.
- albator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Now support extension ! I hope Openoffice will be like firefox to IE.
- tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -11/+44Umm..if your using Microsoft this isn't for you anyway..
- Anliz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32Im not sure favoring or even needing OO warrants the title of fanboy
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+25Yeah, OpenOffice is great. I don't happen to have MS Word on my Windows machine, and I don't really want to get a pirated version, so OpenOffice fills the void nicely.
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24OOo 2.1 opens in under 2 seconds on my ppc mac now. This is a sweet update.
- xDreaminGx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I'd love to see OpenOffice support the new MS Office 2007 formats. Extensions would enable quick support for things like this.
- zulfy26, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14woot. I hope they've improved the dictionary. Some words that are words aren't in its dictionary... Quite annoying.
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14to those digging this comment click the damn link before you do so. its pretty damn sweet

http://www.mepopular.com/?url=ref&channel=digg_OpenOffice_2_1_is_here - guyperson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11OpenOffice is awesome. Instead of having to buy MS Office, you can get this for free. Also, they have an OpenOffice.org Portable App for your USB Drive so you can launch it from any compatible computer.
- pvtjohndoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I hope so too, but the OpenOffice home page needs to be reworked first. It's not very welcoming to potential new users. If an average computer user goes to their site, there is no easy way to find out exactly what OpenOffice is or what it does. It seems targeted toward people that already know all about it.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Would also like some grammar checking support!
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Let me know when that very good alternative is available."
Let me know when Excel and work with delimited text files properly (including fixed width fields and arbitrary delimiters) and can save CSV data without screwing up string fields.
I use OO Calc because it can do those things. You should use what works for you. - barius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They've had a Spanish dictionary since v1.0. You have to install it separately though:
http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/download_dictionary.html
I completely agree about the lack of a 'pretty' interface. However, MS spends millions just making their interfaces 'pretty' so the question is really whether that 'prettiness' is worth money to you. - ArchAngel21x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I just tried downloading the Mac Intel version and it said the download is not available.
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I love my openoffice.. i even prefer it's interface over MS Office...
- maffiou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yep, got rid of my pirate MS office a while ago... Open office is the way forward... I like how you can create PDF easily...
the one thing I don't like is that my company still uses MS office and when I work from home, I can't reexport easily... Not the end of the world, I just grab a laptop from work but I wish it was more efficient... - Karmalary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Open Office is nice, but I wouldn't call it awesome. They have a ways to go with a lot of things, like documentation and support for MS Office 2007 formats. Still, I reformatted my system a month ago and have yet to reinstall my copy of Office 2003. OOo has been doing everything I need.
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@inbred: exactly! For most home users, I believe the choice is: Do I go for the hassle of getting a pirated version, or do I get the completely free to do with as I please version?
- TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6um, it's a link that does relate directly to the release of OpenOffice 2.1
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I love the poratable OOo. I can plug it into any computer and access any filetype. I also have portable VLC on there, and of course firefox.
- piratebill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Here's whats new
# Multiple monitor support for Impress
# Improved Calc HTML export
# Enhanced Access support for Base
# Even more languages
# Automatic notification of updates - ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I know they've had quite some time getting an adequate OS X version developed. I know there's NeoOffice/J and OpenOffice utilizing X11, but maybe a decent port for OS X would be nice to see coming soon (still in internal dev last I heard).
- Benzoid, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10MS or OO are so close to the same, it doesn't matter to me other then I didn't have to pay for the MS version. At work I use it because I didn't pay for that either..
I just use whatever is on the machine I'm using.. Not a fanboy.. Just happy it works! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I tried open office 2.0 the other day. I really wanted to like it but I had some issues.
First of all the color scheme. Word 2003 is much prettier with the blue. I went into the menus and found I could change everything but the menubar colors. No mention of skins or color scheme packs online either.
Second. I was trying to write a paper for spanish class. Ooo didn't have a spanish dictionary.
Third it doesn't have grammar check in any language.
I know that I am going suffer a fanboy deluge, but when I already have Office 2003 it is a sunk cost so using one or the other costs the same to me. I went with M$ - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Mac ppc, intel and other versions here, possibly
ftp://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/ - blackvlad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm a Microsoft fan (not a rabid fanboy, but a fan), but for use at home I didn't want to pay so much for Office (especially to install on multiple machines). OOo passed the best acid test ever: I installed it and told my wife (an MSOffice ace) "Try this out, if you don't like it I'll go buy MS Office". She's had minor problems that she solves within a minute or two; the only thing it really lacked was an Outlook replacement, and after searching a bit I got Mozilla Thunderbird with the Calendar plugin to take care of that. I love MS, but when the free stuff starts getting this good, its hard to resist.
- frequencyone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have never owned the full MS Office. My old computer at home is running Word 97 and the laptop I have for school runs OO and its great! Open Source is a blessing when you are a poor college student.
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What page are you looking at? Just follow the giant green "Download" boxes.
- bunnybash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i have installed this on our two business computers and labelled the desktop shortcuts "Word", "Excel" etc. and the end users have yet to complain or not be able to figure it out. Open Office isn't for everyone but for a vast majority of home users out there, Open Office is all that is required.
Most university students that i have helped with their computer, i have installed Open Office for them, telling them to give it a try and if in 6 months they decide they need Microsoft Office then to go out and buy it, i have yet to see one of them go out and buy Microsoft Office. The one advantage they really seem to like is the auto finish of words which when dealing with long latin words is handy instead of having to type out strange words every time hoping that you have spelling correct, you hit "enter" and it auto completes the word.
A great program that deserves a place in the software world! - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And the mac versions are now drag and drop to your Applications folder. Woo-hoo!
- KIERANMULLEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I tried torrent. I downloaded in less than a minute. Nice. I am uploading it now at 80KB and will do so for awhile. Easy thing to do since its free software.
- febryle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Waiting for the Universal version for my Intel Mac
- TheTorontonian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, the problem is the same as the "once you have used the competition, it better be better syndrome." I mean MS has the market pretty much cornered and although I would like to *like* Open Office. Converting files from one to the other is annoying since I use MS at work.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Site is getting Dugg, here's a faster download link for the Windows version:
http://www.download.com/OpenOffice-org/3000-2064_4-10616855.html?tag=lst-0-1 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Extensions_repository get your extensions here
- kuribo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm getting the same thing for the PPC Mac download, for en-US and en(stable).
- barius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>>If OO really wants to take over, they need to make sure it just works. And not just for home PC's but PC's on a large AD network with hundreds of computers already running office!
That's called 'interoperability' and if you have a problem with OOo's integration into AD and other MS technologies, I suggest you take it up with MS as they are the one's who control it. - donalb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Like many above, I really want to like Open Office. And I do....but.
I have 2 PCs at home, one has Office 2003 on it. The other has Office 97!
I'm starting writing my Thesis for a Masters in my spare time, so I though I'd try OOo2.0, specifically Writer on the "home" PC. It fell at the first fence: AutoCorrect. Since I've been using Word for all my assignments I'd added lots of auto correct entries for example I type EDM and it auto inserts "environmental decision-making" etc. So it speeds me up significantly. There's no way to import the Word auto-correct into OOo (though there is a long and confusing and ultimately dead discussion, ending 2005, on this on OO Macros forum).
Auto-correct in my Word is about 3000 entries. OOo is about 12 that I put in myself. It's not going to be important for everyone (although anyone I've ever shown the utility of Auto-correct to, has loved it), but it was the first, and last step for me. - pinetree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@xDreaminGx - A plug in for Microsoft's Open XML format is supposed to be coming in January:
http://digg.com/software/Open_XML_plug_in_for_OpenOffice_org - prateeksriv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hey! who wants MS Office Open XML support anyway? It sucks and defeats its own purpose by supporting binary extensions.
ODF is better and MSOffice already had a converter for that. Now we can use OOo at home and M$O at office! - drilldown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Experimentally, early versions had a "save as microsoft word doc" as the "OK" button in the save dialogue after opening a word document. Nice to be able to open and save to doc compatible format from home. Just because the job uses M$ doesn't mean I should run out and pay for the same word processor to work from home - when I'm off the clock.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Yeah, well, if you already have Office 2003 there really is no point in getting this. For those of us who do not want to shell out the cash or get a pirated version, OpenOffice.org is great.
- womfalcs7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love OO, but they need to better their updating engine.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Once the plugins start rolling in, so will the users. This will be just like the Firefox invasion.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can set it to save as .doc by default if it makes things any easier for you:
Tools --> Options --> Load/Save --> General --> "Always save as" drop down menu - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Lets put Microsoft out of business, finally, please. God I'm sick of them.
The worst thing about MSOffice is its lack of interoperability with open source database applications, most notably MySQL. I'm mean come on, ODBC is a standard people, Microsoft has to put something in Office to make it NOT work with MySQL for crying out loud!
Bottom line is, if you buy one MS product, you might as well buy them all, cuz nothing else will work with them. - moebis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't know what the other Mac users are talking about, they must have downloaded RC2, because the 2.1 final is not available for Mac yet, intel or ppc. I've tried multiple sites, it's just not available yet. Also, how soon will this filter into NeoOffice?
- Agabus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am an OpenOffice.org user and have been for quite a while now. I have no reason to use Microsoft Office instead of OpenOffice.org, it does everything I want it to, including running on both my Linux and Windows computers.
I don't diss Microsoft Office, because clearly they're doing the right thing, for a lot of people, and by them having a product available, doesn't hurt me, so why should I care?
I am a big supporter of the GPL and open-source software in general. I don't want to pay big $$$ for an office suite, but it is not because I shouldn't. Microsoft puts a lot of effort into its office products. However, there's a whole bunch of other hackers out there coding OO.O and giving it to me for free and under the GPL :)
Keep up the good work at OpenOffice.org. -
