- jakejarvis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"How is this official?"
The other screenshots posted were of a leaked copy, and these are from a legally downloaded Microsoft copy of the build. - Chris123NT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0w00t :)

- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope that Windows Vista can live up to it's expectations.
I heard that Microsoft is rebuilding the Windows kernel or whatever from scratch?
Is that true? - freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, next versions of windows looks like XP
who'd a thunk it - Backlash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like how you asked the guys in the forum there to digg this story jake :)
- rimco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Aah, will we ever get tired of seeing Vista screenshots?
... Yes.... yes we will... ("will" meaning "already have") - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HAHAHA enjoy!
- tehLazyPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^^^^^^
lol, i noticed that. im letting it load while im checking other things...
btw, is this "official" version for download somewhere? i found where to get that leaked version... but if this is somehow and updated build of it, ill want this. - aetherane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is the dual boot issue fixed yet?
- mark_1581, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow eight posts and no MS/Gates/Vista bashing yet!
- jakejarvis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More screenshots were added. :)
- the-rip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the guy who submitted this story has an apple icon
and its a windows story
ironic - GolfDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well the digg effect is taking shape on the site now
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the influx of traffic killed the server...
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let me guess you can share media files with other computers, but only if they're in some goofy "My Video" type of directory. (actually I hear they got rid of "My"). I also notice they kept that annoying tiny arrow button in WMP10 you have to click to get to the File menu.
- stderr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it looks alright!
- illusionfxp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, if I may add. There is no sidebar in this build, lets look forward to next month.
- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Think MS is a load of crap? Well make a "MS FREE" PC. No MS OS, no MS software, no MS codecs...
I will listen to your smart comments after you live like that for 3 months. - smashtactics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about, I can't see it because the site can't handle the load.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0like the aqua graphics.... quite good look - if I went solely for the eye candy, I'd go for it..
- kkapoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a Windows user, however, I think I'm sick of Windows. Not because of the security/instability issues but becasue there has been no real innovation for quite some time and visual aspect is kind of blah! Even the new Vista screenshots just seem like a re-hash of the same old thing. Perhaps it's time to try Linux or Mac.
- illusionfxp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can also answer the "How can this be offical??" question. The build tag for this build (October CTP) is 5231.winmain_idx03.051004-2120. Now, in many of the screenshots, you will see this tag in the bottom right hand corner above the start menu. Compare them all you want. These screens are real. (and more coming, too) :D
- brucebeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is this official? Unless nextl3vel is somehow a microsoft backed company? I dont understand how these screenshots can be anymore official then other ones posted on the web?
However, the news is good, so +Digg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.nextl3vel.org/index.php?s=a4fbfcaa0cec8a3a54bf9c9e106a827b&act=Attach&type=post&id=144
if you notice they got rid of there start menu ideas i wonder why? - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. Got to be the ugliest icon and window decoration theme I've ever seen. I thought VISTA was suppossed to be about looks?! Guess not.
- m4v1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0'How has Mac innovated recently?'
the entire operating system was re-developed and built on UNIX when they switched to osX, just a little more than adding a dock. Hopefully Vista will be the windows equivalent. - illusionfxp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Website is back online! Enjoy guys. It appeared that The Planet decided to take a break from watching our server. ;)
- johnwp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you =)
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks amazing!
- illusionfxp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah.. MSDN or you are an offical Microsoft Tester.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0'Think MS is a load of crap? Well make a "MS FREE" PC. No MS OS, no MS software, no MS codecs...'
Good advice! I hate it when people complain about Microsoft but then don't try something else. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0m4v1s: Actually it's not strictly true to say Mac OS X is based on UNIX. It's a flavor of UNIX based on the same Mach Kernel which NEXT STEP was built around, with a splash of this and that to taste. In reality OS X learns a lot more from closed source *NIX's, like NEXT STEP, another of Mr. Jobs' projects, than it does from an open UNIX.
As for the fact that you seem to think that hoping Vista is based on a UNIX, and that this is a good thing to wish for, perhaps a little reading is on order.
And the original digg? You can't polish a dog's egg, but you can put it in a box and tie a ribbon round it. - binarypower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Am I the only person that wants the Vista NOT for the pretty interface? The very first thing I will do is strip out any visual effects (just like xp) and bring the start menu back to the 9x style. I just want improved performance and to fix a few bugs that I have not been able to iron out with xp.
- smhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ughh! What a mess. The UI is ugly hodgepodge of styles. Of course, that is all visual, so relatively easy to be tightened up for the final. Right now It looks like it was built by a bunch of 15 year old winamp skinners who didn't communicate with each other during the process.
The shiny thing has some promise and could be nice if it was consistent. - kkapoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Despite not being a Mac user, I'd have to agree with jimgardner1973 on this one. Every other community out there. Linux, Mac, Open Source Browsers, Media Players etc. etc. have all provided significant innovations. Microsoft has seemed to have fallen behind. Let's see if they can make a come back. However, I think the average consumer has been pretty put off by MS product quality in the last 5 years. Given that MS has the majority of the market share they also have the most to loose.
- chris86wm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, it is pretty. If it is good i may consider buying it for my laptop. but...... I am sure that it is gonna suck. THANK GOD FOR UBUNTU!
- tehLazyPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i hope this sight has the funds to cover the bandwidth ... wow... going on ... 20 minutes loading the page??
+1 digg
+2 internets for whoever gets me a download link - pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You need to be an MSDN subscriber...which costs quite a bit of cash...
- cyclopticgaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not much to see here besides eye candy. The UI looks much better than XP's stock, but it hasn't changed much functionally. The Start menu still sucks. WMP looks a little less grotesque. With all the transparency, I'm having problems determining which window is the active one. When you stack windows, it becomes hard to tell which window is inactive because the transparent window top-bar can become white--very similar to the active window.
- tratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0omg micro$oft is teh lame, lol. apple 4 evr. ^_^
- gattix68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So if you don't like the screen shots it makes windows a piece of crap under the hood? People used to think that about my car up to the point when they had to hand me the cash.
- iindigo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been keeping track of Vista through the various builds, and I'm still not seeing anything impressive. Nothing I haven't already seen in OS X - it's essentially XP with some bad layout changes and and WindowBlinds theme that looks like it was made by a design school reject.
Anybody that's extensively used OS X won't be impressed by this. The only people it will impress are all those out there that don't know anything but XP and believe no other OS is possibly better than Windows. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows XP SP3
- rossbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So why can't Microsoft do something original instead of attempting to clone the look of OSX? I mean, is this basically going to be XP with transparencies?
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's always possible that MS will change the look of the OS upon release. It's happened before, (not necessarily to MS products though) and it's not out of the question.
The main problem I see is that I just couldn't look at interfaces like that all day while I work, they're just too intrusive. They need to really figure out a style, and stick to it. The UI is all over the place, and everything is different.
It also looks way too serious, despite the candy everywhere, too businesslike, but I guess I haven't seen it in action so I can't comment properly.
Jimzip :D - ogamiitto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I suppose as time goes on I will be forced into purchasing Windows Vista. Which is what really pisses me off. The constant upgrade path that these corporations place us on.
An OS is an OS as long as it is stable and allows other programs to run and is compatible with other computers that is all you need.
The real enjoyment in computing is to be found within the software that you bring to the OS. How is Vista or OS X or Linux going to improve this enjoyment? This is the real question. - citizensagainst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Way too much looked like XP--wtf??!!! And the Start menu looks nothing like what PC Magazine showed a couple months ago. LAME. I do like the "aqua" look, but if that's what I'm after I might as well think different(ly).
- tylersmalley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess this means I am going to be switching to mac.
All I think of when I look at these screenshots is the "blue screen of death" turning into the "aqua screen of death" - rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what's the deal with the "peer-to-peer" screenshot? That's pretty scary.
