- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Stability wise, windows xp is very stable....and they are only going to improve on that instead of the old way of scrapping a OS and starting fresh they are going to continue improving on Windows.....3d manipulative windows while media is playing or different apps are running....better multi tasking....New IE 7 Based on firefox....Winfs (win file system) coming out in a upgrade after the initial release via windows update...Better desktop graphics....making IE 7 Independant of the OS so you can uninstall if you like which I seriously doubt people will do being built on firefox....and alot more they have not mentioned as of yet.
- ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think they still should have gone with Window XD or Windows >:P
- Maagic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NOW It's official
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2005/jul05/07-22LHMA.mspx - mynameisnick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The new name just sounds weird. 95, 98, NT, Me, XP, Vista. It doesn't fit.
- KdoggMDF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Vista... that is horrible... i'd rather Longhorn than Vista... can you imagine asking your buddy if he is running 'Vista'... ugh... XP is better than that... M$...
- Billdozer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OMG KEVIN WE NEED FORUMS!!!
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What its not XP Service Pack 3?? How odd for microsoft not to call it by its real name. FTC would have wanted that way.
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Long Live, Longhorn... Oh, year+ later? Nvm.
- MaxxSmart, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1http://www.whois.sc/windowsvista.us
Look, M$ registered windowsvista.us, seems pretty damn legit to me. - truk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not "Official" until it's publicly announced. Right now the title should say "Rumored Longhorn Name is Windows Vista"
- jojoko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2am i the only one that gets it? vista is like a great view. and where else can you see great views from on the inside? through a window!
- prax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does it really matter?
Course, the last time MS used a word for a name instead of letters or numbers was um, what was it? Oh yeah! Millennium! - pollon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0V=virtual I=integrated S=systems T=technology A=architecture
or
V=virtual I=infrastructure S=system(s) T=Technology A=architecture
(it is about virtualizaton technology embedded in future ms oses).
vista is an originally italian word that means "view" or "sight" and it has become part of the spanish language since the renaissance.
by the way the name microsoft windows vista sucks.
A company that builds windows called VistaWindow is located in Warren,OH USA and i think they should immediately sue M$!
check www.vistawindowco.com - Kylinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Darn. I really liked the name Longhorn
(an austinite - from a part of texas where technology DOES mix rather well) - loker269, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft is positive they will make a Q3/early Q4 release in 2006
- Paiway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now tell me, which one is cooler: "Woozy Numbat"(name of one of the recent Linux kernels) or "Vista"? I think we all know the answer to that one...
- drowningfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I doubt this name will stick. It's not due out in Gold form until '07. This could be a viral marketting tactic to say
"A distant view or prospect" ~ dictionary.com http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=vista - twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It won't matter what they come up with for a name, a lot of the geek community will bash it because that's what the geek community does best, bash MS.
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see what the big deal is. Windows XP is actually Windows "Experience" and Windows Vista will be Windows Vi probably or VS whatever they decide to shorten it.
Vista is an English word, to all you morons that don't seem to comprehend that. While it originally comes from Spanish, it is commonly used in English, so dumbass comments about the official name of the new Windows platform are not really valid if you don't know basic English. - loker269, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually it is due out in '06 and I think a better name would be Windows XP SP3
- drowningfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Late '06 may be. Early '07 likely
- phuct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1'cause i always choose my OS based on its name..
- darkstar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It must be said....
Hasta la Vista, Senor Gates;
Hola Senor Jobs - BlueFiberOp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jammerdelray: I hope you're joking. Internet Explorer 7 will not be based on Firefox in any way, shape, or form.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Longhorn was actually the name of a bar. Check from Wikipedia "Longhorn is a name of a sports bar at the Whistler-Blackcomb ski resort"
Whistler, was an early name for XP."
And actually, Blackcomb is the codename for the version of Windows after Longhorn. Longhorn being Windows NT 5.2 and Blackcomb being WIndows NT 6.0
To someone who asked earlier, Windows XP is Windows NT 5.1, Windows 2000 was NT 5.0
I could have sworn that Longhorn was going to be named Windows MX or Windows HD. One of those two. It would seem more likely to put something like that than another "codename" like Longhorn or Vista to the name. Windows Vista sounds as discredible as some of those Linux distro names (Damn Small Linux, Mangina Linux, etc) - maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's the Engadget Article:
http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000433051518/ - mikson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sounds even funnier than longhorn.
- txdrifter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, thats even worse than Windows ME
- HesNikke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows Vista... Windows VI... Windows 6? well... i guess... Isn't XP really windows NT version 5.5?
- aardwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess that settles the VI vs EMACS debate then!
- nadams124, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it sounds ok, but i really hope in this version of Windows that Microsoft has really looked over it and done everthing they can to make it better than previous versions like Win 98se, Me,.
2000 and xp are actually decent OS's. I wanna say hi to everyone and Peace!! - IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the word vista reminds me of both "Visa" and a spanish hat party
- jojoko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1vis·ta Audio pronunciation of "vista" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (vst)
n.

1. A distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening, as between rows of buildings or trees. - Americanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Tomorrow there'll be a Longhorn announcement at 6 a.m. PDT in the morning tomorrow. I can't tell you until then what's up"
Scoble - lora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i just registered windowsvisa.com
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats a Horible Name! I hope its not real!
- besouza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not a bad name... I like it a lot better than Longhorn.
- MikeZila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could be worse.
- Superpoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1vista = view in spanish... well, I would say:
Este windows tiene una vista a XP
(This Windows has a view of XP) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shoulda been Windows .NET or Windows 2006
- jojoko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1someone is forgetting about texas instruments.
- jsk2001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe they are trying to get people to use Visa, instead of pirating it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ajcomet, you're an ignorant moron. If you wanted to you could leave to linux any day, or at least dual-boot your machine. It used to be cool to say that you don't like microsoft back in the SP1 days but now it's getting to be really, really old. If you don't like the product, stop bitching about it. No one thinks your cool, nor cares, that you say Microsoft sucks.
- sloberino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows Vista?! Must be true: http://bink.nu/Article4551.bink
Longhorn would have been a good name - A-Dubb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1When I was working for MS there were a few rumored names floating around the office, 'Vista' was not one of them, but we'll see.
- TripinVA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought I read a few weeks (months?) ago that the name was going to be two-lettered (like XP).
- gadgetophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Vista/View... depending on your point of vista, you may see a new OS, or a UI upgrade for XP :-)
- kidjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awful. awful.
- amprancid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YEAH... its not official yet bud.
- jet3004, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Vista = Rainbow gay.
