- chachabyi, on 09/01/2008, -1/+190And the never-ending beta phase begins… however, excited to see how it works regardless
- AdamTReineke, on 09/01/2008, -4/+167I'm interested to see JS benchmarks as well as how it stands up to the Acid 2 and 3 tests.
- seantubridy, on 09/02/2008, -5/+128A download? Don't they know this is the age of browser-based software? Why can't I run it in my browser? Oh, wait.
- KnightMareInc, on 09/02/2008, -2/+114its gonna need extensions
- warkro, on 09/02/2008, -0/+106if it has adblock, i'm sold....oh wait, google owns adsense.
- MiserableTruth, on 09/01/2008, -5/+103"Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go."
If they make good on this promise, I'm sold. but CBS is reporting:
"The browser, of course, will integrate various Google services in it, something that rivals has accused Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) of doing over the years when invoking the monopoly claims against the software giant. "
I want to see how integrating various Google services goes with clean and fast. - inactive, on 09/01/2008, -5/+78This is exciting. Think Firefox, but with (the much better) webkit engine.
- Noctem, on 09/02/2008, -3/+76Parts of Webkit and parts of Firefox?
Hell. Yes. - nullx42, on 09/02/2008, -0/+70My guess is that if its by google, Acid 3 results will look something like this:
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/8086/1210746650 ... - bratterscain, on 09/02/2008, -4/+68Here's to your success Google. Though I do wish they'd take on the desktop OS market with a *nix based OS.
- 9bpm9, on 09/02/2008, -6/+68More people use Windows. A lot more.
- Oibalf, on 09/01/2008, -12/+67This is very exciting. Hope to see a Mac version soon!
- factoryjoe, on 09/02/2008, -0/+47It'll be curious as to whether being open source and forkable will minimize the potential for being considered "anti-competitive".
- skizzo, on 09/02/2008, -1/+47Think they will offer an ad block plugin?
- BigE89, on 09/02/2008, -1/+39Its open source, dude
- benhunted, on 09/02/2008, -5/+40Google is one more step closer to world domination.
- iamlacroix, on 09/02/2008, -2/+37Unlike Microsoft, they won't be including it, and only it, on a desktop OS. So I don't see it being an issue. If it's an optional application, they can include whichever features they like.
- Metasquares, on 09/02/2008, -2/+37And here I was thinking that they just started.
On the one hand, competition is probably good in the browser market. On the other hand, it's another browser to test in. - zachimal, on 09/02/2008, -2/+35Sexed with new Google innovation.
- ashura001, on 09/02/2008, -2/+32It's built on Webkit, so Acid 2 should be fine. I'm not sure how it ranks on Acid 3 though.
- gaurav4u99, on 09/02/2008, -1/+31Good thing is apps like Gmail can be launched with no addressbar-.. more space
- MAGZine, on 09/02/2008, -1/+31That was fast.
- BIGFREAK, on 09/02/2008, -1/+30this is very cool news read though the comic strip. :)
This browser could change how we work and play on the internet.
Very STOKED! - guardi, on 09/02/2008, -15/+44Do we really need yet another browser? Web developers must be excited! Develop and test against IE (6,7,8), Firefox (2,3), Safari, Opera and now Chrome? Thanks Google. :-(
- arjie, on 09/02/2008, -1/+30The one for snozzberries tastes like snozzberries.
- merwin, on 09/02/2008, -3/+31Yes, damn them for being innovative.
- orion9, on 09/02/2008, -3/+30There is rumors that they'll have the PAGEBLOCK plugin..that'll block the Webpage..and only display ADS!
- fandyboy, on 09/02/2008, -0/+27A Google CAPS LOCK key!!
- drmsux, on 09/02/2008, -2/+28Haha..browser IS the new OS. Think of outer OS (Windows/Linux/OS X) as a big fat legacy BIOS. Google does not want to beat Microsoft in their own game (desktop), they want to shift focus to the web, where MS does not have an advantage.
- EntrepreNerd, on 09/02/2008, -1/+27Hardly.
This will dig into the IE share far more then the Firefox market share. But more importantly it is Google Branded, which means it will be SUPER easy to sell the idea to my clients. Sadly something with a name like "Firefox" from a company called Mozilla, is not an easy sell to my high end lawyer client base. On the other hand Google Apps was easy to sell if for no other reason then the Google Branding. - oneoverzero, on 09/02/2008, -0/+26The latest builds of WebKit have been passing Acid3 for a while now.
- xister, on 09/02/2008, -0/+25Yeah well, if it can load a 600 comment page on Digg's site without hanging for an eternity I'll use it.
- Sil369, on 09/02/2008, -1/+25that's what she... nah, not here.
- KaivenTor, on 09/02/2008, -6/+30I have no doubt this program has been built to help promote Google apps. But since I tend to use Google apps, I'm willing to let that slide. Aside from that, I read through the 38 page comic and I have to say I'm impressed by the concepts they are hoping to introduce with this, so I'll definitely be trying this out when it launches. I found some additional quick info if anyone else is interested: http://www.squidoo.com/google_chrome
- bertspace, on 09/02/2008, -17/+39No Mac version? Bah...
- phocis850, on 09/02/2008, -1/+22It's tomorrow already.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -0/+21I dunno.. Firefox is built around its addons, which Chrome doesn't really have (yet). I'd say it's like Opera.. it has its speed dial and according to this article:
"On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple."
That's kinda the impression I've gotten from Opera over the years. - URnotheonly1, on 09/02/2008, -0/+20It is midnight in 99.99.7% of the ***** planet! RELEASE!
- Shootfast, on 09/02/2008, -1/+21It's no secret. It exists.
Googbuntu
However it's used in house by google, and won't be distributed. - DivineMonkey, on 09/02/2008, -12/+32I'll stick to Firefox, and not somebody who wants to know my surfing habits.
- EvolvedAnt, on 09/02/2008, -2/+20Google Chrome is not included and installed by default with an operating system such as IE was with windows. How sad that CBS would make such an amateur like mistake in bringing up their comparison.
- MScrip, on 09/02/2008, -2/+20As long as we have computer hard drives full of files... we'll always have a desktop OS.
I don't wanna keep my 20,000 digital photos in the "cloud" nor do I wanna attempt video editing over the web.
There's plenty of reasons to have local computing... Photoshop anyone? - trogdoor, on 09/02/2008, -2/+20Only the HTML rendering is done by webkit, they have their own new javascript engine.
- dragossh, on 09/02/2008, -0/+18It's not strange. It's smart.
- tuxracer, on 09/02/2008, -0/+17Actually Firefox, Safari, and Opera are so close to standard compliant that in the vast majority of circumstances what renders in one, renders identically across the others. You are still only having to develop for two browsers: a-poor-excuse-for-a-web-browser-and-web-devs-nightmare-IE and everything else
Also, Google Chrome and Apple Safari both use the same rendering engine (WebKit) - Skab, on 09/02/2008, -3/+20Strange that they are doing this after resigning on firefox for the next three years.
- Sushubh, on 09/02/2008, -0/+16drive innovations. google would now force other browsers to add features they lack currently. i can already see a couple of features in chrome which i would like in opera!
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -0/+16@Shootfast
It's actually called 'Goobuntu', but otherwise correct. Also, they have modified versions of many distros for employees to use, not just Ubuntu. - belumaves, on 09/02/2008, -1/+17it makes sense, windows will provide the largest test audience, so focus on getting the windows version out the door, then see what bugs show up. when they drop the mac and linux versions they can also find bugs that are specific to that platform because the windows version has exposed the cross platform bugs.
that's my reasoning if I were running the project - oneoverzero, on 09/02/2008, -3/+18Safari and Chrome are going to share engines.
