- xxdesmus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33anyone think this looks absolutely nothing like OSX?
- Zolk, on 10/12/2007, -31/+55What features did they cut in this build?
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Ive never seen a mac OS that looks like this.
Especially the semi-translucent/opaque windows, the start menu, and the Microsoft logos everwhere. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Hey! Anybody think the new Ford Focus looks suspiciously like a Mercedes? They both have four doors, 4 wheels, and a trunk. Hell, even the interface is almost the same.
- ilitirit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I love these comments. 4 or 5 years ago people were saying "I'll won't upgrade to XP. It's basically Windows 2000 with a fancier theme". Now, noone will touch Windows 2000 with a 10 ft pole (even though it's a decent OS).
De ja vu? - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Kosterfield, that is 100% incorrect. D3D9 games won't even work on D3D 10 cards without emulation. The point of D3D 10 is it removes all GPU features and starts from scratch with a unified shading model. D3D10 cards don't just need incremental improvements to hardware, they require a complete redesign.

I, too, like Media Access Controls, but what precisely do they have to do with user interfaces?
/Mac, not MAC
//hates people that do that - joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Slowly but surely looking better.
If the price is "reasonable" I might actually upgrade.
I'm interested enought that I'm picking up a DX9 vid card - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20What in the hell is wrong with digg? Since v3, there have been 10 billion dupes. This has already been on the front page twice.
- Jorg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11What are you smoking HAROLDXZ?
Let see, here is what IM programs worked for me on the last few builds....
Aim, MSN Messenger, Windows Live Messanger, Miranda, GoogleTalk, XFire, Yahoo, Communicator, and Trillian 3 worked, but had some issues.
Jorgie - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I like the new cursor. :D
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Beta means just that. If you expect everything to work that's your fault. If MS ships Vista and it doesn't run Office, THEN complain. Till then, stick to XP (or whatever you normally use) and shut up about BETA software not working 100%.
- silenceHR, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15akhm.... why not wait then and go for DX10 card? they are coming prolly before Vista anyway.
OTOH, by the time Vista comes out top of the line DX9 will be dirt cheap. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8QuantumLo0p wrote: "Have you seen Vista's "gadgets" yet? They're Apple "widgets" with only two letters different. I suppose when you run out of fresh ideas you have to start flattering what works."
Ah, but the Vista sidebar had been demonstrated long before Apple introduced the Dashboard, so Apple copied Microsoft.
"No," Tom objects, "Konfabulator had widgets before either Microsoft or Apple so they're both ripoffs."
"Touche, but Apple had Desktop Accessories since 1984 so they were the true innovators," counters Sara.
Bill angrily interrupts, "Poppycock, MS DOS 2.0 introduced TSRs which were the true genesis of all these programs in 1983."
:::::::
Aren't arguments like this fun? They're also completely pointless, especially in this case. Gadgets/Widgets/Accessories are just small utility programs and have been around for a long time. Arguing who did something first (unless patents are involved) is pointless as computing is evolutionary. - trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -15/+22Are you calling Mac OS ugly?
- jpt62089, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16ooooh just Aero, nothing big... (jk :P)
- znutz, on 10/12/2007, -21/+27Here's a torrent
http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/780258/Microsoft_Windows_Vista_32Bit_Build_5456_DVD - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Can't wait for Duke Nuk'em Forever. It's gonna be a great game.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Beta 2 is public. This is not beta 2.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6QuantumLo0p...
You're forgetting KDE desktop widgets, Windows XP widgets (Star Dock's Object Desktop). There was problably something for the Mac too before Apple got with it.
All this stuffs been done before with 3rd party apps. The only difference is now its being included as a standard feature. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7But at this point in the game, the betas should be stabilizing. At this rate, it's likely Vista will be delayed. Again.
- Dariuss, on 10/12/2007, -17/+22cant wait for vista, it will be a great operating system.
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Distribution of Windows is not legal unless you are Microsoft. Even if it were a public beta (which it appears to NOT be).
- markormesher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I still think that Windows 2K is great, not a personal user of it, but when I admin networks and stuff, windows and server 2000 are the way to go, most all fo the bugs have been ironed out.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They need to release this into the public beta.
- ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's a quick review of an update to a beta. If you want to read in-depth reviews for the actual Beta 2 of Vista, you're more than welcome to go off and read them from whoever you want. But right now, Paul's got a good article detailing exactly what has changed in this update CTP.
- Mnemonicman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nope. Alteast from the last few builds it hasn't let me update so I assume it won't for this build too.
- mtied, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Let's not turn this into yet another OS X Vs Windows argument.
- Rickard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why the thumbs down? It's a legitimate question. There are millions of make your own DVD movie apps out there, but hardly any proper DVD writing apps. There's Nero and a few others, but they're all seriously bloated or just not good enough.
- dukeofhurl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Try Window Key+Tab.
- markormesher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Don't deny it guys, this OS has been in the works for 4-5 years... It should be a stable build, actually I found that beta 1 was MUCH more stable than beta 2... same hardware same everything, the only problem was that you couldn't install software. But honestly, when it comes to beta 2, software install should be top priority of the bugs list. Though, Vista HATED Valve's Steam... which, seeing as that is the way I forsee most game distribution going, should be a BIG issue on an esentially gaming platform.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I have to agree, the newest Vista build does feel better then the previous ones. But it still screws up and doesn't show my correct monitor resolution as being available. >_
- SeanMoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+470 new vista wallpapers are up on a.b.comp, for anyone who cares.
- TehSuper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is anyone else just waiting for Dx10 and not all the weird features in Vista?
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's a good ultra high-level change list of random features that Paul always focuses specifically on. If you can ignore his stupid commentary it's okay. It's amazing though that he did a series of articles on the Window build process but apparently learned nothing given his whining about "why didn't they put this stuff in beta 2?!?".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think both of your comments are inaccurate to a degree. While it is true DX10 is a complete redesign digitaldud assuming all previous versions of direct x will be emulated is well... a assumption. I find it hard to believe the video card manufacturers are going to go the emulated approach when they all-ready have such full hardware support for previous directX versions.
Why wouldn't the video card manufacturers just build in the dx10 instruction set like they have with other versions of dx? It's just like processors AMD for example with sse1/2/3 ... no need to throw out what is all-ready there just build on top of it. But, I don't know.. the technology has not been built yet... so this is just creative thinking and assumptions on my part. - Metasquares, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can add it back - it's just off by default. Go to Control Panel -> Taskbar & Start Menu -> Start Menu -> Customize and click the checkbox that says "Run command".
You can probably still use the Win+R shortcut to get to it either way. - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Similar, but not the same.
For example: If you type "migwiz.exe" and hit enter, it will start the migration wizard. But (on Beta 2) it can
have problems if the file name you type is not recognized as a typical executable file. - Coletrickle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you know better reviews, how bout sharing them with the rest of us, and putting them in your comment. I would certainly appreciate it.
- snipes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gaim works.
- kirupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes - they do.
- PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You reformat and reinstall.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7It's going to be ugly no matter what they do. Even if it was an exact duplicate of OSX 10.4 people would still complain.
Just to honestly put things in perspective...
The benefit will be whether or not they can change it like in XP. At least then you don't have to suffer if you don't like. - tnvwboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a BETA. it's meant for users who need or want to see what's coming next for support or development or reporting/media. They may have made it available for public beta, but that doesn't mean they expect it to work 100% of the time for 100% of the people. That's the point, to get feedback on features and real world user needs/desires.
I can run Vista Beta2 at home with 85% usability but there are certain game and hardware that will not work, so I boot back under XP. At work, dual-boot also, I test our company apps for compatibility. Right now some of our major business tools do not work. I'm not worried because we are MONTHS out before it's finally released. If it doesn't work by then I'll gripe. For now suck it up, it's BETA software, it's not supposed to work perfectly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's still seriously broken, and looks unlikely to be ready by the "release date". Backward compatibility with earlier Microsoft products (like Office 2003) is a disaster.
Crashed on me three times within the first 15 minutes - still nags about any alteration to anything - serious hardware recognition problems - still no drivers for many common items of hardware. Unusable as is. - millerm277, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does the new build support my chipset yet? (nforce 410)
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.winsupersite.com/images/showcase/winvista_5465_02.jpg
Is this only with this version?
Ive been trying to get Beta 2 to do the 3d thing. Dont know the keys - Jsan2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even if it did, who cares?
I know I am excited about a new Microsoft OS, and I am mostly a Mac/Linux guy. Do you plan on staring at your windows manager in awe of how beautiful it is, or do you plan on using the bloody thing?
If they keep stealing/copying from each other, it just means better, cooler, and more refined software for all of us. - brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Window+Alt+Tab
Been in there for a while now. - triath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know if Beta 2 keys work for these releases?
