- xtr3m, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21You beat me by 30 seconds.
So far I like it. The content area looks much less 'reader' than before. Now it's more like an actual blog. - monarchista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Just great job though I was expecting something like that. Feels very much like Gmail.
- rodrigomuniz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14fantastic new version. now I can leave bloglines.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14It's alarmingly different for something that I thought was already pretty damn good. I think google reader provides the best compromise between the "River of News" philosophy and the more structured, e-mail style layouts.
It's going to take some getting used too, but at least the keyboard shortcuts are the same. - gakman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Agreed. I gave up on the last Google Reader because of it's speed and lack of features such as listing only new posts. I think I'll give the new one a second chance.
- cam2009, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10you can go back to the old design. go to the preferences, check the old layout, and tell them what you don't like about it.
- evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Great improvement. I love the "mark as read as you scroll" feature, it's something I would have never even dreamed of, haha.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Wow, huge improvement.
I never liked the old interface. - cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It looks much better, but I still want to see some GMail Integration.
- TheBurt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10No good for me, doesn't work in Opera.
- skit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Same here on 9.02. All squished up :(
Getting really annoying with the amount of pages I'm having to open in Firefox lately... Makes me seriously consider a move to Firefox. - Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm always trying new Readers. I just couldn't bear the old Google Reader. It was useless for doing quick scans. This is much better, but would still benefit from providing a Quick Front Page View of New Headlines from all your feeds that you could see at once. I'll use it for a couple of days and play with it, though.
My best Reader solution has been a combo of the Google Personalized Homepage and the Google Reader. I've added dozens of Google Reader Modules to my Homepage. I then set one feed per module. This allows me the quick scan of the Personalized homepage, but also allows me to scroll down within a module and see more headlines for individual feeds, Star ones I want to come back to, give a quick overview when I click on a headline and Mark it as read if I've clicked on it. So, the best of both worlds. The only drawback is that the page takes too long to load all those modules when I refresh. Otherwise, it's the best combination of my preferences. Try it. - chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I am really liking this. Seems simple to use so far, fast, has more features, and works more like I envision a newsreader working.
I almost wish I didn't buy a license for NewsFire right now. I think I will have to try this out for a little bit to see how it works. - burkay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The best is now better.
- dudinatrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I love the new "blog" look. The old Google Reader just seems like a good idea that wasn't implemented fully. It was just slow and hard to scan through a ton of items at once. This new version will be a daily tool for me now.
Check out the Settings -> Goodies section too. There's a couple bookmarklets there. The "Next" one is pretty cool... it opens the next unread item in your browser and marks it as read in the process. - dudinatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There IS a bookmarklet! Log into your Google Reader, click Settings, then Goodies. It's in there, along with a cool "Next" one.. which keeps navigating your browser to your next unread item. When there are no more items.. you get a fun little easter egg. :)
- kfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hi Ray, I'm the one who designed it. If you'd like to give me a more detailed report of what you liked about the original design that's not facilitated by the new design, I'd be happy to read it. You can send it to hi at fury com. --Kevin Fox
- dudinatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You know that you can just use the "Labels" dropdown in the top-right of the Reader module to filter the view to a specific label, right? Seems like that would be more efficient than loading the module so many times...
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I never knew about google reader until I saw this digg. Although I can't comment on the improved interface, I think they have a nice setup.
- Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Finally a mark all as read, now I'm happy.
- thoughtfulclown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What other web-based RSS readers have these features?? I really don't see how this is copying bloglines at all...
- raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@cam2009
Thanks. Already done.
Maybe they could add user-constructed modules or extensions for Reader just like there are for the Personalized Homepage. A more user-driven model or approach would do Google no shortage of good.
http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Labs-Reader - MrCalifornia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The one thing I don't like is that if an article is up in my view and i haven't expressly read it I might miss it by closing the browser. I liked that I could open up the old reader anytime from work or home and get all the articles I hadn't yet read.
I never really use the categories so that left side is pretty worthless now. - Adenosine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I don't knoiw about everyone else, but I don't like it. I loved the asthetic before, seems so busy now.
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3*sigh*
Once again, Google screws over Opera users for the initial release. Come on Google, it's not that hard to do better cross-browser compatibility checks. - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MUCH Better. I've been waiting for the "Mark all as read" option forever.
Still don't know if I'll switch from Bloglines yet, but they're on the right path. - FreyrVanir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have read all that is on the internets ^.^
http://www.google.com/reader/next?go=noitems - bmc152006, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4WOW, now ill actually start using it.
- davidbabylon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I love the new look.
- johram, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I love google reader but I need a bookmarklet like the one for google bookmarks.
it sucks to copy-paste a feed address and change the site you're looking at.
very cumbersome. - unixjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Love it.
- chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sure Google Reader engineers are reading these comments, but why not send them some feedback about the space bar feature change? Here's the Google Group for feedback they suggested at their official homepage:
http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Labs-Reader - chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can turn off the scroll tracking in settings -> preferences.
- diggmaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just wishing that google engineers might be reading this thread, let me post my views about this new layout.
It's awesome. HUGE improvement over the old one. Expanded view and list view are great. Looks more structured now. I think i'll get back to reader.google.com after spending some time with Wizz RSS and Sage ;). - econoar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I will now be switching to Google Reader
- Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But I would be happier if they integrated gmail and google bookmarks into it.
- h4lofourt33n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I didn't even know this existed, thanks! I like how it looks.
- xtr3m, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Well, do you agree that having all stories on one page is better than having one per page? Before you had to click to read the next post, now it's smooth scrolling.
- chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the new version is awesome. I save a lot of time because of the way this version displays all of the items in the right pane instead of one item at a time. That, coupled with the fact that Google Reader (or maybe Digg) is where I spend most of my time when I am surfing the net, makes me a very happy Reader.
- dcharti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Absolutely adore it. This finally feels like a mature RSS reader, and they added a ton of keyboard shortcuts to navigate everything, including the new stuff and the feeds/groups list on the left (check the FAQs for the new shortcuts).
This finally made me quit NetNewsWire in the dock to give gReader a serious try. - Lagomorpho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is such an improvement over the last version. There seems to be some refresh issues though. News items are showing up in my regular RSS aggregator but not in Google Reader.
- Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, I use the labels filter in each module. The benefit of loading all those modules is that you can scan many feeds at once by just scrolling the page.
- Aurorius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow.. can say goodbye to news alloy now
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it does seem to be easier to use - would be nice if it gave the option to import your feed from the Google personal homepage.
- czaktisto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Frankly this version of Google Reader sucks giant elephant balls.
I normally don't dislike products as much as I do this one. Please stop copying other providers guys! Be original like you were thus far - scatterlined, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Before I could easily scroll through the current item with the space bar and then progress to the next item with the j key. Now the river of news decides that when I hit the space bar to scroll down to the next page of the current item that it wants to select the next item for me. Why? I love(d) Google Reader for its keyboard shortcuts, now they don't work as well.
- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6I don't like this new version. If I wanted bloglines or some other reader, I woudl use it. Google is just trying to copy that style, and I hated it. I used to just have all my stories listed on the left and I could read as much as the feed gave me in the reading pane. I thought that was very simple and easy, and a pleasure to view. Now it's just like other RSS readers.
- yeahbuddy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6No Opera support. I know google is in bed with Firefox, but sheesh...Opera is the safest browser out there. Oh well.
- jonbeckett73, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think Google just jumped their competition in some style...
I've written about it over at PluggedOut - you wouldn't want to be in a fight with them, would you... - jonfravel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0there no longer is the blog this option
