- distortedimage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This is pretty cool since it's really wiki for each course rather than having traditional notes. I wish this was around when I was an undergrad. -- Would have made those pesky government/history courses less painful. =)
- Eptiger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If word got out about this, it could be HUGE! Can you imagine not sweating it if you have to take a long weekend for a wedding or something, just get the notes online? Or if you fell asleep in class and missed a part of lecture?
- Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It'd be nice if it wasn't so specific to a class and time; but that's also a problem that not all colleges would define a level of class the same way.
Since the site's down and Duggmirror doesn't mirror the whole site, I'm just going off an assumption :
Definitely bookmarking though. - ShawnHorton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Let's just hope tech-savvy professors don't get wind of this, or they might make quizzes on book content, and not lecture content. But until then...
- TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3omg thank you UT students! spreading the word when it comes back from the digg grave, the larger it gets, the better it gets
- tjl2015, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder how the school systems will respond to this. It will probably vary from professor to professor. Some might support it, some might try the "my lectures are copyrighted" nonsense.
Also, I hope this has a wikipedia-style record of changes and modifications, and hopefully a rating system of contributors. Otherwise I could see a real potential for abuse. Imagine if you have a class graded on a curve. A nefarious individual could make sure they have a good copy of notes, and then poison the whole class notes the night before the test. When using collaborative creation, you get all that comes with it, the good and the bad. - TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i see one HUGE flaw so far after registering. you can search for a class but you NEED a professor to link you to a class. theres a plenty of classes that have more than one teacher, it would be nice for it to all be lumped together to get a larger range of notes.
on the same note again, this is also narrowed by your own school. too bad, would be nice to read notes about classes from another school if possible, maybe my school is a lil on the slow side and i want notes from a better school? - busterbros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, it's not terribly intuitive, it seems to force you to go through the same steps each time when creating a new lecture. And it doesn't seem very useful for note-taking during class, as each student would be creating a duplicate entry without a simple way to merge them. I guess it would be okay for organizing lecture notes after class.
I tried using it to organize my law school notes and found it to be pretty counterintuitive. But law school notes can tend to be structured a bit differently than other subjects, so others may find it to be more useful. - distortedimage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://duggmirror.com/software/New_Free_Collaborative_Notes_Site_for_Students_by_Students
- xenubaba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now, why didn't facebook think of this?
- P3ST4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OMG I had this idea like a year ago. I was gonna call it ClassNotes. But I would have had to code it all myself so I didn't bother. It'd be nice if this really takes off, as long as it stays free.
- benggg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.notetango.com is better
- froinlaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another note taking site doesn't let people mess with your notes and lets you keep your notes private is notecentric.
http://www.notecentric.com - mikekreein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately we got cocky and thought we could stand up to a digg. Bookmark www.notemesh.com and check back later when the action cools down.
- adodikan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3down already?
- tjl2015, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Every day something seems to cause me to lose a little more faith in humanity. Thanks for contributing...
- oktobr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*sigh* After I graduated too :P
These are exactly the kind of tools I could have done with last year. Groupwork was always a nightmare. People with bad ideas insisting they are implemented because they are insecure, people with good ideas staying quiet because they are shy...I was prepared for intellectual graft, but the social element took me by surprise with its power struggles and coordination problems. In retrospect, groupwork was the focus of our uni education, teaching us to stop thinking about problems as something the individual must overcome. - sakvor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was not able to register in NoteMesh as I am outside USA and we do not have edu or mil in our universities. But it seem like a wiki with tagging. Nice systems. There is a good system for teachers /classes http://www.wikispaces.com which is free (if it is ok that it is open) and without ads for all bloggers on www.edublog.org
Wikispaces has nice features so you can embed media such as youtube videos, odeos podcasts etc. - Disguised, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More schools need to take a page out of DePaul's book and implement applications similar to their Course OnLine system (COL). All lectures are video taped, all aspects of the lecture (instructor's actions, writing on the board, documents displayed on the projector, anything done on the computer, handouts, etc.) are all immediately available on-line to the student.
You can even meet with faculty and staff advisors from any campus via videoconferencing!
So rather than spending the lecture trying to record everything in notes, you can sit back, relax, and actually absorb the material. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately, we're experiencing a high traffic load at the moment, and encourage you to Digg the story, further compound the problem, and come back at an unspecified later time.
- thediggguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish there was an assignment collaboration site, would have save a lot of time!
- affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its not down its just redirected to another page so it dosent get too much traffic
http://www.notemesh.com/notemesh.php?a=home
This is the main page - benggg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.notetango.com/ is better, its what I use at least. It iss still in beta but check it out.
- seanieb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's only for the US. It would be great if they opened it up to other countries.
- buc02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This would be great, except you have to have a .edu or .mil email account. So only college students can register to use this product.
- Rachmaninoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is still very buggy...I registered fine, but when I tried to add section notes, nothing updated after I submitted. Nice idea, but I can't afford to spend time writing out notes only for them to disappear. Also, what about students who free-load on other people's notes? Everyone should have to contribute to the class sections to view the notes.
- kevinarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is an awesome idea.
- kaniz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, for the last two years I've had an idea of doing something like this - even just for personal use if anything, but never got around to doing it.
- distortedimage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some foreign colleges don't use .edu. I think Europeans use .ac.uk (for accredited college?)
- bcrtolbooth, on 09/17/2008, -0/+0so how exactly do i get an email account from my school
- AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1its ***** up that you cant drop into this site unless your dumb enough to pay to learn
- thermus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1At PSU, this business was invaluable: http://www.nittanynotes.com/
No way I could have slept through so many classes without them.
A wiki is a good idea, in principle, but what is the incentitive for one student to help out others in the class? Courses operating on a curve promote competition among students, so where is the motivation to help someone out that skipped the entire semester of lectures? - Lathentar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1'''It's only for the US. It would be great if they opened it up to other countries.'''
What would it take to make it outside the US? There a certain email format they're missing? - mikekreein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It has a history feature to revert vandalism that is even easier to use than wikipedia - users simply step through the different edits of individual sections and revert them back if necessary.
Also, users can report obnoxious people to be banned permanently from the site. - hollatchyaboi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.testPirate.com is better than these -- upload hard copies, completely anonymous so you don't have to worry about nosy teachers poking around...new site but good content check it out
- loates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out www.myDataBus.com. You can upload any type of file, don't need a professor's acknowledgement, and can use any type of email address to sign up. Plus, its free and has group collaboration tools. I just graduated 2 years ago, but still use this site for file storage and sharing. I can see how college students would totally benefit from this!
- Jennifer0125, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0......
- capitalfellow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and how does depaul fund such an operation?
- Jennifer0125, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I have been using http://www.mydatabus.com/ as well and it works well for me. It has great group tools. I can invite different members of my classes that I want in my group. You just need there email address.
The best things about the site (besides the fact that it is free) is that when you upload a file it automatically virus checks the files, you don't have to use your .edu email to register for the site, it accepts all file forms and you can access your files at home, in the computer lab or in my dorm as long as I have an Internet connection.
FYI......Oh and it works for anyone in or out of the US - My friend is doing and abroad study in Paris and I invited her to one of my picture groups. She goes to the site and downloads my pics whenever she had time and had no problem signing up........ Hope this information helps...... - wired4christ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2append .nyud.net:8090
- kitkatsavvy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0mmmmm...... when I was at uni, some notes were already online via the uni's website... i dont see what putting notes online is new.. or maybe i have missed something.. oh well..
i was at uni 2001-2002 in aus here. - mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm gonna explore it when its not dead.
