- wwwdeveloper, on 10/15/2007, -2/+32Finally an easy solution to transfer my firefox stuff to my 4 other work areas. Thanks!
- aptget, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23"Windows only"
- ntwrkguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13nice! we're on the right path to extension migration!
- rockthethird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Available from Mozilla's official site also: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2109/
Enjoy - gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If only extension cords were that easy to consolidate.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11even itself!?
- aptget, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10That's why you're not paid to think.
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8mirrors are good. but i'd think twice before loading those xpi's i got from a digg comment.
:) - Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sweet, it gets cookies, too. Just needs to get passwords so I can truely browse like I do at home/work.
I guess another option in that case would be to remove "package" from any machine -leave behind what was originally there? - kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7rename to .xpi instead of .zip then drag&drop them in Firefox
- darxider, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I wish the new google extension would back up the extensions as well
- tommajor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I concur... google would completely rule in the firefox arena if that happened!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Much more helpful than taking a screenshot of my extensions window. =D
- sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5too bad windows doesn't have true simlinks, but in linux you could also do
ln -s ~/.Mozilla //share/path/to/folder/
and then any changes between the two are automatcally syncronized - Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12"Dupe Nazi"
Exactly why I digg you people down.
1. its "dup" short for Duplicate
2. you actually call yourself a Nazi -deservingly so
3. call my momma if youre so hurt -it's about the same
4. most importantly: It made it to the front page for a reason. let the story fly when wind takes it there. - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5In any OS:
Right click Mozilla (/documents and settings/uname/appliaction data/ or in Linux /home/.Mozilla)
Select appropriate archiving method (7zip, zip, rar, tar, etc).
Thumdrive, e-mail or otherwise easily transfer this file to any other computer.
On a secure or semi-secure network, you can even share that folder (or archived file) and for example, easily drop your Windows Firefox folder into Linux and have everything "just work" (easiest when your Firefox versions are close or identical). - Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -13/+17I think the "I hate windows" community is losing steam. thank god. Know why I like Windows more than other OS options? Applications and lots of them to choose from. Example? See parent message.
- Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"i don't have the time to research and find the various extensions that might be useful to me"
dude.. that's just sad. you're sitting around reading digg but, you don't have time to get FF and extensions?
"sites will pop up that allow people to browse the .xpi files for various users"
Sounds like research.
Do yourself a favor.. just get FF. it's already better than IE out of the box and you can get extensions whenever you want. It's actually "fun" - jambarama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Check out silence of the foxes: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=43168
It has been around a while, and it really is pretty awesome. Get a fresh ff install, add in any extensions you want, and it'll make a silent installer for ff. Just run it and it'll do everything else.
Good find though! - SanityInAnarchy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Losing steam"? Digg seems to have been an MS-worshipping hive of scum and villany for a long time.
Ok, I'll play fair. Know why I prefer Mac OS to Windows? All the apps I need, and they actually work. Know why I prefer Linux to Mac OS? All that, and apps actually come with a real uninstaller. Plus it's free, as in beer.
And yes, I keep a Windows in dual-boot. And hell yes, I will bitch LOUDLY about being forced to boot into it for a Firefox extension. - anonymonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4MozBackup ( http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/ ) has been doing this quite well for a long time. You still need MozBackup to restore your backup, but it works great for shuttling your stuff around several FF installations.
- danglerman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5since dugg mirror is about fried, and this might make it the front page,
here are the two programs on a mirror
http://franksmovies.googlepages.com/febe-2.0.1.zip
http://franksmovies.googlepages.com/cleo-beta1.zip
you need both to run the extension - hungarianhc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was hoping that Google Browswer Sync would take care of this for me... but this is just as good!
- BloatedBunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FEBE can also be found on the mozilla firefox plugin site.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sounds like you need more ram. Firefox is at 70,399K for me right now with plenty of extensions, a huge history file and lots of windows open but it's not slowing anything down.
- Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5What is this google thing you speak of? Link?
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the normal security message didn't pop up. And why am I being rated down for asking a freaking question? Figured it out, I had to allow java script.
- djAnakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've had this extension installed for a while now. already used it twice. it's a HUGE help! dugg!
- digismack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http://www.google.com ;)
- gann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@vdubski
I agree. I have been using this profile-copying method as a backup for a long time, and successfully restored everything from it after several firefox screwup. However, some people may find this 1-click solution convenient. - urbanaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just clicked the "Install" link, just make sure you click the security message after doing so in order to "Allow" installs from the site.
- Kosterfield, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For the next step up PortableFirefox is the way to go. This takes the extensions, which is great if you don't want to haul around the whole browser. PortableFirefox runs off any memory stick and carries extensions and passwords with it. Just the next step if this isn't enough for someone.
Get it at http://www.portableapps.com - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1about fricking time......
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just to the official firefox extension page, look at most popular list and you'll pretty much be set with the most updated, useful and compatible extensions.
- technoticau, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1A must-have for firefox users imo. FEBE basically backs up your entire firefox into a folder (extensions, bookmarks, themes, passwords, entire profiles... etc) and you can pack it easily using CLEO into a single .xpi (firefox extension archive, something like .zip for firefox).
Then you can store this small file (mine was 3 mb) in your email account and use it as backup! Or you can use this to transfer all your firefox settings (most importantly extensions and bookmarks) to another machine. Very convenient :)

Direct link to CLEO: http://customsoftwareconsult.com/extensions/cleo/c ...
There is also MozBackup that does the same thing which I did not test yet.
http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/ - ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Add this along with Google's Browser Sync and you're all set. Browser sync has already saved my butt once already when I had to reformat my HD and reload Firefox. BAM, all my bookmarks, cookies and passwords were reloaded. The only thing I couldn't back up that way was my Firefox extensions.
Now I can! - Shadoefax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FEBE v2.01 doesn't, but the soon-to-be released v3.0 will. It will also backup/restore usernames, passwords, browser history, form fill history, userChrome, userContent ... even your entire profile!
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7it won't DL it for me. I click on it and it just goes to the top of the page????
- katsanes, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1For those that use the Google Synchronization plug-in, it'd be sweet if they just did extensions too...
- clickr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now works with linux too...great stuff !
- SanityInAnarchy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a bit sick of taking one step forwards and two steps back.
For instance: I've got what I believe is the easiest OS to admin, and the easiest distro of it, but that distro is Gentoo, and Gentoo compiles everything from scratch, which makes it take forever.
Firefox actually has good extensions and good web standard support, but as I understand it, the Firefox UI is essentially some XML that's rendered with the same Gecko engine that powers the webpage. In any case, my Firefox is much slower on my Mac than Safari is, but I've come to rely on some extensions that Safari will likely never support.
OpenOffice is arguably the only good cross-platform office suite. I could use Koffice, but it would require the adventure of trying to get KDE to run on my Mac, and I'd have no shot of running it on Windows, so it would only work on my Linux desktop. Yet, OpenOffice is still slow, bloated, and ugly compared to things like AbiWord. Then again, AbiWord has always been horribly unstable for me. And I certainly can't use MS Office -- I'd be relying on the alpha-quality OpenDocument exporter, and I'd have to pray MS doesn't break it.
I guess what I'm saying is, I want to have my cake and eat it too. I guess this vaguely firefox/safari-related rant is about me being sick of having triple-boot and always missing one OS or the other, one program or the other...
Yay for competition, I guess... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg++
- streetblader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is exactly what I use it for haha.
- BinaryJay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The fact that it relies on Windows components making it useless in my linux environment is a major let down.
- SanityInAnarchy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh no, please don't. Or at least, let me choose not to.
It would be very cool to be able to sync my Adblock blacklist, and some other preferences. It would NOT be cool to sync, say, IETab to Linux or Mac. - looksliketrent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can avoid the extra bloat of these extensions by creating a batch file...
rar a -r -s -md4096 -k -m5 -rr10p -ep1 [Path and File name of Destination Archive] "C:Documents and Settings[User Directory]Application DataMozillaFirefoxProfiles[Default Profile]*.*"
^ Creates a highly-compressed, redundant RAR archive.
This is for WinRAR, but the idea is the same for any command-line compression utility. - looksliketrent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Digg butchered it, add slashes where appropriate.
- mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Does this also back up your search engines that are on the upper-right hand part of the window?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!! i just got a virus yesterday, and this morning it erased all my FF settings... thanks digg for being one day late. jk... but seriously, i'm *****, i had like 1000 bookmarks
- Kamino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Thanks! Is handy portable.. tho I don't have too many extensions. (Memoryleak galore)
