- LANjackal, on 12/16/2008, -35/+188Because it's a good OS, as those who actually USE the OS as opposed to writing flame articles and mouthing off on Digg know. I run it on my end too.
- inactive, on 12/16/2008, -14/+142I just installed Vista on one of my machines, so this is perfect. Thanks and dugg.
- phaoloo, on 12/16/2008, -0/+109it's really amazing that people want to convert pdf to word so much (#3 in the list)
- Durrok, on 12/16/2008, -9/+103I was half expecting to see "Windows XP Professional" in that list.
- pikpikcarrotmon, on 12/16/2008, -2/+55Yeah, I guess you are.
- Muler36, on 12/16/2008, -2/+53I'm surprised VLC isn't on the list?
- Autodidaddict, on 12/16/2008, -16/+66Dear idiots - the Vista bashing bandwagon has crashed. It's not an overall better OS than XP, but it's decent now with SP1 and all the upgrades. It really is decent.
If you have 4GB of RAM and Vista 64bit and it's slow as hell, you are doing it wrong. Lol, I hate to use that meme, but seriously, 4 or 3GB and you're fine if you know how to tweak it. If you don't, lifehacker is a good starting point site.
Usually computer problems are the result of stupid people doing stupid *****. I had someone show me a laptop runnings vista that was slow too. I booted it up and it was running 3 virus scan programs at the same time, hahhaha. Seriously.
I'm not the biggest Vista fan, but I call BS if your brandnew laptop has 4GB or ram and applications are taking 3-4 minutes to load. - daonlyfreez, on 12/16/2008, -2/+43My personal current top 10
1. AutoHotkey
2. DropBox
3. Opera
4. PeerGuardian/TinyBLM2
5. System Safety Monitor
6. Avira AntiVir
7. Daemon Tools
8. VLC
9. Pidgin
10. uTorrent - Arramol, on 12/16/2008, -0/+38PDF format does actually have its uses. I work in the copy center of a university, and tend to prefer PDF over editable formats since something will occasionally get lost in the translation moving an editable file from one computer to another. Most of the time, a Word document works fine, but there's that 1% where there's a font missing or something like that. Yes, there are ways around that problem with .doc format, but most users find it's less of a hassle to just print to PDF.
- Ommatidia, on 12/16/2008, -1/+39Wow. You know how to get software for free? Please, share your secret!
Seriously, a lot of the free apps are better than the ones that you pay for (or have to pirate). If you weren't such a douche, you'd realize that this list should still be relevant to you. - FredFredrickson, on 12/16/2008, -19/+57Nevermind BobZombie - he's obviously one of the retards who continues to bash Vista without having ever used it.
- dntn31, on 12/16/2008, -0/+37I suspect it's a corporate thing. Not everyone owns a license for the full version of Acrobat and if changes need to be made to a PDF, converting it to Word is the first thing most people think of.
- InfernoX, on 12/16/2008, -15/+52And what were the hardware specs of that laptop hmm?
- t3chn0lust, on 12/16/2008, -2/+35I think Antivirus 2008 is the most popular free Windows download of 2008. I work at a computer repair shop and almost every computer we get in for virus removal has it.
- Superpoo, on 12/16/2008, -11/+37You can't use more than 4 gb of RAM in a 32bit OS, and that's counting VGA and RAM, so if you have a 512mb videocard, you could only use 3.5GB RAM, and if you put more, it will only recognize 3.5GB
- bermo, on 12/16/2008, -0/+24It's great to see AVG and CCleaner make the list. Both of these offerings are programs that I reckon more people would use if they knew they were out there. I find myself using these tools time and times again when fixing Windows PCs.
- speedbmp, on 12/16/2008, -0/+24FF3, and DropBox :)
- vizeroth, on 12/16/2008, -8/+31Even a 1GB machine can run OK with Vista, although the more RAM the better, and you have to be more careful about what applications you run concurrently. Certainly Photoshop is going to want as much RAM as it can get, and even Powerpoint seems to like having plenty of RAM available (especially when printing, for some reason). Newer games are out of the question with 1GB, though.
Vista has been hounded by the PC press and in general by people that don't seem to have used it. I run it on 3 PCs (1 desktop and 2 laptops) that came loaded with it pre-SP1 and haven't had any significant problems, though I will admit that I wouldn't upgrade any of my older machines to it without a significant hardware investment (ie more RAM and a dual-core CPU, along with the motherboard to support it). - Autodidaddict, on 12/16/2008, -3/+24Reply of medium value.
- naturo, on 12/16/2008, -7/+27Great useful list.
- zip000, on 12/16/2008, -0/+19Charles, that's the opposite of what this program does. This program takes a pdf and changes it into a word document.
There is a ton of software that does what you're talking about, and most of it is free.
Try CutePDF. - FelixDeluxe, on 12/16/2008, -1/+20That saying is not at all appropriate in this instance.
- tmalloy, on 12/16/2008, -1/+20Why is he getting dugg down? He's right, for 32-bit consumer versions of windows 4GB is the maximum, including the video card.
- atticus8, on 12/16/2008, -4/+23Nah, Vista is crap. What you guys should try is the new Windows Mojave.... it really blows Vista right out of the water! Now that was an impressive operating system; too bad that guy from Microsoft who was showing it to me just up and left with it.
- Autodidaddict, on 12/16/2008, -2/+19Shouldn't your reply be somewhere near the original poster's comment? Not way down here?
- SmpleJohn, on 12/16/2008, -2/+19Anyone notice a few of the "free" softwares aren't free.
- Trunkhouse, on 12/16/2008, -1/+18Don't wink at me
- stefilini, on 12/16/2008, -4/+21@SuperWinner
First of all you don't need a few of virus checkers and spyware programs. That will slow down the computer. only 1 will do (personally, I don't use them)
Second, Vista has an automatic defrag built in and it happens behind the scenes. Using more defrag utilities will not optimize the system and it will slow the computer down.
Third, just because it's "Brand New" does not mean it has a fast processor or good graphics card or enough ram. it should have 2 gigs of ram or more for Vista. if it doesn't it will slow the computer down. - sporg, on 12/16/2008, -14/+30Best free Windows Downloads: http://thepiratebay.org/search/windows/0/7/300
- ScientistBlah, on 12/16/2008, -1/+17That was a stupid ***** comment, and I'm a mac user.
- Br3ach, on 12/16/2008, -0/+15Great list! Evidently screwing with iTunes is a popular one this year
- CalcProgrammer1, on 12/16/2008, -2/+17Virtual Clone Drive > Daemon Tools. DT has too much bloat and it's not really free, VCD is light, works great, and is truly freeware (not shareware).
- LANjackal, on 12/16/2008, -4/+19Dugg for FF3 and Vista SP1. I voted for FF because it runs on just about everything out there, but SP1 comes in a close 2nd in my books. The rest I really don't find that useful at all.
- AkronGuy, on 12/16/2008, -5/+19Useless Comment
- z33Tec, on 12/16/2008, -0/+12You can disable the browser plugin though.
- ChappyChaps11, on 12/16/2008, -0/+12Vista works just fine, did you remove the crappy software that OEM builders put on there? Or how much crap software did your friend put on there? Seriously, Vista has never once crashed or slowed down on me.
- BxBoy, on 12/16/2008, -0/+12Wait till Antivirus 2009 rows around.
- z33Tec, on 12/16/2008, -0/+12Depending on the virus, it may already be too late to just "install AVG" and "let it clean up."
- astyguy, on 12/16/2008, -0/+12anyone know something like "Quick Media Converter" for linux, i know about transcode ... i just want a nice user interface :-)
- inactive, on 12/16/2008, -0/+11PDFs are around for a loooooong time – I work in advertising, and as a designer I must produce at least 5 PDFs daily for various things, hell some of our printers will run jobs directly from High res PDFs. I ditched Powerpoint and now make Presentations using PDFs + InDesign, it's actually a lot nicer that way, and you'd be surprised what PDFs can do.
A PDF is actually a pretty solid file-type, the software that handles reading isn't usually great though.
So next time you type something on the internet, make sure you know what you're talking about. - atticus8, on 12/16/2008, -0/+11Wow what a noob! How could it possibly be a virus when It says "Antivirus" right there on the title. I'm totally protected because I installed it on all my computers, and my friends' too. I'd school you some more on how to really protect your computer but I have to help these desperate Nigerian princes, who probably heard about my skillz and wanted my help.
PS All you Google users out there: it's basically been made obsolete by this fly piece called Bonsai Buddy. Check it out - awesome graphics. - str1fe, on 12/16/2008, -1/+11I use Sumatra PDF. It's super-lightweight and loads PDFs like Notepad opening a text file. No reason to install Adobe Reader.
- Alchemist11, on 12/16/2008, -3/+13Uhm, I formatted and installed Vista, and I never had any problems. The drivers all automatically installed (but I installed the video card drivers, etc, myself), and that was that.
A "brand-new" laptop doesn't equal a "top of the line" laptop. I'm not saying that's what you need to run Vista, but my 1.5 year old computer runs that and any games I want fine. Don't jump on the "Vista sucks" bandwagon. It's not amazing, but people can be fine with it if they stopped complaining about it. - HyperionHK, on 12/16/2008, -1/+11I got a free version of Vista Business, legally, through my school. I installed it and liked it. It's not amazing and I certainly wouldn't pay for an upgrade from XP for it, but for free or with a new computer it's fine imo. I actually went back to XP and missed a few Vista features and actually had a lot more problems with crashing and ***** like that until I went back to Vista. SP1 really ironed out a lot of bugs in it.
I think a lot of the Vista haters have either not tried it and going on what they hear from others, or they only tried it at release when drivers were ***** (surprise surprise, and really it's the vendors fault mostly). I use it for just everyday stuff and games and it's rock solid and no noticible performance drop from XP at all. Plus things like the new start menu search, or having it autodetect most of my drivers on install, shadowcopy (only in business and ultimate though) are pretty great improvements over XP.
I think Vista's big downfall was that it took so long to make so little. It's an improvement over XP, but not a big one. - recruz, on 12/16/2008, -1/+10can't say enough good things about dropbox
- dtfinch, on 12/16/2008, -1/+10Some exceptions:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Exte ... - panic, on 12/16/2008, -5/+14Great list! Here are a few other good apps that I think could have made it on this list:
- FoxIt Reader
- Song Bird
- Defraggler (by the same guy(s) who did CCleaner)
- Notepad++
- Gadwin Print Screen (freeware edition) - KrazyKoala, on 12/16/2008, -3/+11Why is AVG so popular? I find Avast so much better.
- cawpin, on 12/16/2008, -0/+8"also just about every version of vista is 64 bit and goes as high as allowing 120 gb of ram."
Um, no.
Most Vista sales are 32 bit still. And a 64 bit OS can handle 18+ exabytes of memory space. - Chalks777, on 12/16/2008, -0/+8I had a computer that I installed CCleaner on. It found 37 TB's of useless files, cleaned my room, and made me some toast.
