- MxxCon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10THESE ARE NOT SCREENSHOTS!
THEY ARE BRAINSTORMING CONCEPT DESIGNS!
MISLEADING TITLE! - VargVikernes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Listen to mxxcon. These are NOT screenshots. They are concept design made in Photoshop (or Gimp). None of this actually exists.
Thank you :) - njbraun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it me or this the THE UGLIEST menu you've ever seen...
http://vladoboss.softver.org.mk.nyud.net:8090/mg2/index.php?id=42 - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Astonishing? more like hideous!
http://vladoboss.softver.org.mk/mg2/index.php?id=42 - KoZo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow..... fugly...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it looks like vista minus the drm! :D
- dhcmrlchtdj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1call me elitist, but these are not impressive as either mock-ups or implementation. i use os x and e17, and in the past i've used more WMs than i care to recall, including kde.
- RockTheWall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't get me wrong, psylence, I love me my Linux. I just don't kid myself that we're going to win any grandmothers with GUI's like this. It just looks unprofessional, and for someone who isn't aware of all of the background, that's an automatic turnoff.
- X_cell_er_8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Ahh I Want And It Can Only Get Better With Xgl!
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ Frosted:
That seriously has to be the most retarded thing I've ever read. I think you've actually killed a lot of people's brain cells with that FUD.
Your personal preference has nothing to do with form and functionality. You just feel more at home with that because its all you know.
Windows XP default GUI is outright hideous. It looks like a Fisher-Price toy. The overall layout is as backwards as it comes. Why the hell do you need a menu bar in every window? You can only interact with one application at a time. Why not just unify it like OS X and have it at the top of the screen to save screen real estate? Instead XP opts for that backwards lets waste screen space so each friggin window can have a menu. From a stand point even the layout of the actual contents is backwards as well. You have all a bunch of directories listed in the same window that aren't really in the same directory. That makes no bloody sense.
OS X is a minimalist look. Its designed that way for a purpose. Ease and consistency. If Apple is so far behind why is Vista every day looking more and trying to act more like OS X?
KDE/GNOME/X/Fluxbox are designed for people that actually want flexibility. Don't claim your opinion as some fact.
Who made you the all knowing omnipotence of what other people want in their GUI? Just because you think all you need are three window functions doesn't mean everyone else does. Again, don't assert your own bias of what a GUI should be. The close button doesn't hide anything. It closes the window removing all unsaved data and controlled processes associated to that window. Guess what, some applications actually have more than one window open! Amazing and hard for you to even comprehend I guess.
I'll take OS X's sleek minimalist GUI or Fluxbox over Windows ugly, backwards, uncomfortable abomination of a GUI. But thats my personal preference. And no, most users don't. There is virtually no hit in performance because all of that eye candy is handled by the GPU. Why don't you read up on stuff before you make stupid comments like that. Only people with lowend machines turn off some of the effects.
Guess what, some of us prefer visual feedback. Don't assert your opinions on everyone else. And before you call the Dock a rip off guess what... NeXTStep (precurosor) to OS X had the Dock and that was made back in 1989. Windows Start Bar didn't come around till 1995. You fail.
Ten or fifteen-minutes wasted? Have you used Windows lately? You spend more time keeping that machine working than Mac Users ever do. We also have Expose which you can't match in terms of productivity greatness.
@ leha: "Mac's interface, if I may quote our governor, are for 'girly man'."
As *nix bretheren, I'd have to say that is one of the stupidest preconceptions I've heard in a while.
@ 7of7:
I'm amazed. You just keep outdoing yourself in utter ignorance. I am astounded. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks real bad...i'd expect more from this...
- sethkinast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems to me that most of these are just conceptual. You can see a few real Plasma shots scattered throughout.
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one that's underwhelmed? Not only are these NOT screenshots, but several are a complete ripp off Vista. Many of the others are horribly ill concieved. If this is the future of KDE, it's pretty sad that they haven't found a single way to "innovate".
- Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well that wasted my time. Not only are they not screenshots, they're really bad mock ups. KDE looks like a kids toy at the best of times. This makes it look even worse.
- ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does anyone in the Linux camp have a clue what they're doing when it comes to UI design?
Discounting the fact that just about all of the themes for Linux are rubbish, even if they were any good, that's hardly the battle won, now is it?
In my experiences with Linux, it's the total un-navigability [sic] of thing that's should be where the various guys & girls for KDE and Gnome should be concentrating their efforts.
Until these fundamental issues are dealt with, Linux for desktop is a non-starter... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What an aesthetic nightmare.
- jamin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First of all, these are actually pretty awful, for the most part. Secondly, they are mockups. :) No digg.
- thbt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ooglay beyond belief. Astonishing?? I think not.
- crunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1.."or I'll wait for enlightenment"...
The journey to enlightenment is a lifelong process, or at least it seems to be, E17 seems to have been on the way for the best part of my 20's... - cmadach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks pretty. is that an icon of an old Gravis gamepad on the second page???
- bondo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wheres clippy?
- jsmecham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These concepts are very confusing and cluttered. Lots of frivolous UI elements that aren't even fashionable in their own right. Even Vista seems to do a better job. However, these are concepts so hopefully the final product will be more polished.
- albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I swear I've seen all of these mockups (not screenshots) at least a dozen times claimed as screenshots. I could be wrong, but I believe the plasma ones are only ones that actually come from people at KDE.
Despite that, they are pretty cool and I'd like to see both KDE and Gnome at least try to compete with OSX and Vista in terms of 'eye-candy' and user-friendliness. This would be a step in the right direction if they could actually implement some of these concepts in the near future... - cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is concept art, nothing more. these screen shots have been floating around for months, and this is NOT what kde4 will look like.
- BentCorner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I noticed a lot of pictures of flowers and trees being used as background wallpaper. Wow. Something that can be done with any operating system that people are willing to pay for.
Let me know when Linux or any other Unix ripoff can run iTunes. - d03boy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd prefer something simple that was fast.
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"There's no font smoothing? That's SO 20th century. "
FYI: The Acorn Archimedes was one of the first "home" computers with "font smoothing", back in eh... 1986? - symmet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ha, I like the crash effect.
- frosted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, I almost forgot.
I have used OsX for a verity of things for the past 2 years. I find it clumsy and slow. When I did 3D animation I used a Mac, it worked but it did lock up a few times. I did not like how slow the interface responded. I also did some pro photoshop work as well and I much prefer the XP version of CS2. - humblemagii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Marked as spam since this isn't informative and noone really uses KDE or Linux much anyways not to mention if they do it's usually a headless linux box.
No digg - h00ligan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seems to me like they are just aspiring to copy most aspects of os x.
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm... better but still no cigar. and neither do most of the comments in this article.
- WDot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like how the Linux community is starting to get inspiration from Mac OS X. This could be what cause some people to switch-- a UI that looks simple and clean. With this and the mockups of the new Gnome earlier on digg, I'm excited about the future of desktop Linux.
- seezer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0again for the blind:
these are no screenshots. just a lame digg article - but hey - the comments fit. - frosted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you to all who have replied to my posts. Even with your negative comments based solely on your Apple allegiance, I respect you for your response and would not take YOUR messages off the board.
To dhcmrlchtdj , you and your "luxury" limits your ability to do more. You are right that the average user doesn't care what motherboard they have, but as a computer tech I can tell you, consumers in the USA like choice. Apple provides about 8 (correct me if I am wrong) current configurations, while Dell, HP, Alienware, and dozens more, offer a mind numbing veriaty of configurations of PCs, or you can always build one yourself. There are many many motherboard manufacturers fo the PC. Apple has 2 I believe, and you don't have a choice, Apple does not sell new motherboards should one of your Apples fail.
Apple is a monopoly that controls hardware and software. Look how hard they are trying to make the new Intel based Macs impossible to add Windows to. Why? To maintain the flow of hardware and software. That is an evil monopoly if I have ever seen one. Where would you go for service when your Apple breaks? Bestbuy? Compusa? Where? Apple, that's where. Think about it.
The Apple syndrom (as I call it) breads loyalty and fanatisisim. There is no real reason to buy an Apple for anything other then a bubblegum colored "look at me, I can afford to throw away my money" status symbol.
Shake up your world, switch from Apple to PC and watch the windows of the world open. - tweeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The crash one is the best!
http://vladoboss.softver.org.mk/mg2/index.php?id=68 - ericesque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll state this again because most people don't bother reading all the posts....
These are mockups. Not screenshots of anything that is truely in development for KDE4. You'll find a lot of these concepts on www.kde-look.org - chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never been impressed by the KDE4 screens... what's the benchmark that makes these so grand?
- bani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0stop posting conceptual mockups as actual screenshots.
misleading story title. no digg. - CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a collection of KDE4 mockups. Some good, some bad.
- xerox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pretty
- raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg2death. So d2d in fact that even the nyud.net mirror seems to be dead.
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ leha:
"As linux brethren, I diagree with you. If you had a choice between a circle and a square what would you assocciate with a man and what with a woman?"
I don't associate either with any gender.
"From my point of view, circles are "cute" and look feminine that is why I called macs design girlish."
Circles are cute? Hmmm clocks, compasses, wheels, car steering wheels, pistons, bladesaws, gears, poles, buckets, baseballs, basketballs, golf balls, tennis balls, footballs (ITS NOT CALLED SOCCER), a lot of "manly" things have circular shapes or is your conception of a can of oil "cute"? A lot of designs these days have curves. It doesn't necessarily make them girly.
"Monitors are rectangular , windows are rectangular why the heck some buttons are circles?"
1. Not all windows are retangular. A lot of special software interfaces aren't retangular. Look at Alienware's software, is that girly?
2. You offset patterns to show important features. Which is easier to spot a specific box out of a bunch of boxes or a circle out of a bunch of boxes.
I think its a pretty bad idea to associate shapes and colors to genders. You know what assumptions make right? - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hah, good luck implementing these on X-Windows.
- zackarya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry frosted. I didn't get to read your original post but I read some of the
comments about it. We can see the main problem with the "mob rules" mentality.
From the comments I can assume that you prefer a different window manager
environment than the zealots here. Shame on you! Don't you know that we
are not allowed to have our own opinions?
For the record, I PREFER KDE. If you don't like it, I don't care.
Zackarya - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man, those are some pretty ugly screens. i sure hope the finished product looks better than that.
- cuby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i haven't used KDE in years, but these look pretty neat. i only have two questions, with the understanding that these are mockups:
1) why does the resolution settings control panel show iMacs?
and 2) why is the "Hardware" icon the unaltered logo for Propellerhead Reason software? what's with all the biting? - PradaPete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really liked the MOTIF GUI design They should bring that back as an option.
Today I only use Gnome, because on Linux I somehow don't want a cute GUI, especially if it's not as perfectly done as OSX or Vista. - hibern8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I see Linux developers are continuing their great tradition of copying the latest and the "greatest" from MS/Apple ... when I first glanced at those shots all I could think of was ... Vista ... ugly ... puke!
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ahawks : that is only if you have no taste.
clearly you dont -
