- ssam, on 10/11/2007, -3/+42lets me watch youtube on amd64 and powerpc linux without the flash plugin.
- cdmarcus, on 11/05/2007, -1/+19I haven't tried it yet, but I remember Democracy Player being pretty slow as well. It probably has to do with it using Mozilla's XUL runtime, which isn't the fastest thing in the world.
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17The thing is, they're for completely different purposes. Democracy is an RSS/Bittorrent video downloader, manager, and viewer, while VLC is just a viewer. I'm not going to start Democracy to watch a movie I just downloaded to my desktop, but I will use it to watch movies downloaded from video podcasts by its RSS reader.
- elmargol, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18I love it!!!
Watch the screencast at http://www.getmiro.com/screencasts/ - elmargol, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Miro doesn't try to replace VLC, in fact Miro uses VLC on Windows to play videos. It's just a different gui + a download client for podcasts.
- Nowheredan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Nope, still 0.9.8.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Why assume? Is free software too expensive for you?
- aserer511, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Kim Jong Il protests- claims player encroaches on the market of his,"TOTALITARIANISM PLAYER"
- nihility, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I doubt it, looks too busy for my taste. Plus VLC does everything I need (usually). I don't think any VLC/MPC users will be switching, they like their minimalist, ugly, get things done interfaces.
- barbobot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8This isn't trying to be vlc, they both play video, that's about the only thing they have in common.
- molecool, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Tried it twice - it's always been a slow memory hog (and buggy). Will give it a bit more time until I see positive reviews.
- stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6It IS VLC. Miro uses VLC as the backend. It's basically VLC + Firefox for the main components.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html - meepus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6what about the memory leak problems from before? are those gone yet? I've been waiting to become a regular user of this program until the memory leaks are stopped...
- Nowheredan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7What's with the mediocre name change? Can a system of government sue for trademark infringement?
- size13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'm pretty sure the Miro brand is owned by Pinnacle Video. They bought them over in the late nineties if I remember correctly. Surely this would represent a trademark infringement?
- gauthierm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'm sure the developers who worked hard on this project will appreciate your asinine comment.
- NeoRicen, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Dled it and it is running EXTREMELY slow, anyone know why?
- matrox212, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I've never had much luck with Democracy Player on both Windows and Linux so if I had to bet I'd say it's a buggy POS but that's just speculation. Still probably a good bet.
- Malachai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Any video podcast that uses RSS feeds can be used.
- ravrore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5those have been fixed
- ravrore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5yes, i think it's quite good now
- BrickSprickly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4dugg because this app has a lot of potential. sure, the content isn't all there and it's got some bugs (uhh beta?), but it runs fine under OS X for me and i really like how you can aggregate torrents with it (the torrent support needs work, though). tvrss + miro is the most convenient way for my non-cable-having ass to see that stuff.
for those of you bitching about about memory hog issues, it's nowhere near as bad as firefox and it's not even at 1.0 yet. geezus. and how can you compare miro with media player classic and vlc when the latter are simply players and miro is aiming to be much more, with a content directory, search of every popular video site, and the aforementioned torrent features? - leksdraven, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5When Democracy Player launched back in February 2006, the feedback received was that the name evoked different, yet equally negative responses. For many Americans it conjured up an image of yet another left wing media project, and to the rest of the world it was, rather bizarrely, being associated with the policies of the Bush administration. In contrast, the new name is purposely abstract.

- ScornForSega, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Did they fix the atrocious codec support?
- theonlyvlad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This happened to me every time I tried any of the builds before. I guess it's just Something In The Code (tm)
- JEmerson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Crashing for me in linux. Can anyone confirm if the linux version still looks different than the windows and osx versions? Always seems to look pretty slick on those platforms while on linux it's just the normal xul gtk look and feel.
- rediknight, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I've been using Democracy Player at work and I absolutely love it. To the guy who said there is no easy way to close the program....smh......you do the same thing you do in a lot of programs....File -> Exit. I suggest that when you install it, don't have it search for videos already on your computer. Just set it to be the default player for the common video file types. Then anytime you click on a local video it will open it in Miro and add it to your collection. I love the youtube search built-in and the ability to automatically download new shows as they hit the net like Diggnation and Pixel Perfect. Also do a channel search for "thebroken" if you haven't seen it.
- WNW3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Like? Baby I LOVE my minimalist, ugly, get things done interface.
- loconet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Installed their ubuntu version. It has a regular app look. No black theme like on the screenshots
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Does their repo have a signing key?
- pyrophire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2But it doesnt download them for you to watch at a later time w/o having to manually add the stream.
- knuppel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3i've fooled around just a bit with this and so far it seems AWESOME.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5For any and all using Miro and who like video games, be sure to check out the 1UP Show. It's well produced, they get lots of inside scoops with video of projects under development, and the staff is pretty witty and hip. They also give lots of love to PC gaming which I respect.
I'm sure you can download this show without Miro, but it's far more convenient using the client. It makes it easy to get old episodes. - shaolinpunks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2can you set your own upload and download torrent settings yet?
didn't like that you couldn't do that before. - miyamotofreak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think this and Firefox just need to stop and focus on cleaning up their apps and getting the best performance (firefox on my g5 takes half a minute to load).
- TheRealPod, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Democracy is a heavy program, but it was much improved a couple revisions ago. If you DLed a while back it might be worth trying again. I just upgraded and Democracy has become my go to video podcast client.
- pyrophire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Wow your Spanish grammar is horrible. Don't try to translate if you don't understand the language.
You meant to say "Yo miro la television" trns: I watch the television.
What you said was "me gusta miro la televisor" which translates to "I like watch the television set" - stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Nice troll. There are instructions on how to fetch deb and rpm packages on their website.
- adolfojp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I've downloaded it a few times and every time I uninstall it for the same reason. Its a memory hog.
- m0bilitee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's sad that a "feature" is stability.
- spacefreak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So am I the only one who thinks the new icon looks like a misshapen M&M? Cause every time I look at it, I really start craving some M&Ms.
- Malachai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I believe this is because Linux apps tend to stress uniformity. Also, theming in Linux is much, much easier than theming in Windows or OSX.
- TheRealToma, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Did the codecs fix their atrocious licenses?
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1looks like democracy player is STILL a buggy p.o.s.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1... just like digg!
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1For me, Joost is slower than Miro. It's not that all XUL apps are slow. It does depend on the app. However, many are slow.
- AlexMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1In theory, it seems neat, but it seems to have the same problem that normal TV has, there's nothing good on. It touts streams like Discovery Science, but it seems like the big names only give up the goods once a month or so. In addition, whatever it is using to play Youtube flash video looks like crap. And the only video blog I truely care about, Epileptic Gaming, isn't on there.
So...yeah. - ubersolid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3FFS, do these idiots not test their app on multi monitor setups? If I maximize it on monitor 2 it ***** maximises off the side of the screen and becomes impossible to get it back. -< halftw ....vlc does that, on linux anyways, dunno about windows, and, u get it for free, be greatful for what u get.
- elmargol, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yes you can
