- tdominey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not sure how much has changed w/ the product, but I installed this a few months ago and it completely hosed embedded QuickTime playback in a browser. I had to erase every last trace of it from my Library in order to get it back.
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't touch Flip4Mac. This thing seriously screws up Quicktime and anything that uses quicktime.
I discovered the hard way how Flip4Mac can screw up a system. Worse off, Flip4Mac's creators totally ignore and try to hide the problems with the product. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2.avi is not a video codec, it's a container. Usually, .avi's contain MPEG-4 data, but it really is up to the distributer. Thus, "we also need something that plays .avi files with no issues", means "we need something that can play anything with no issues" which is a tad bit more difficult than "we need something that plays MPEG-4s with no issues".
Of course, you can always use Mplayer or VLC and have absolutely no problems at all (except for WMV3s, but then again, if it's a wmv file, it has no business on my mac). - stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Usually, .avi's contain MPEG-4 data"
Umm, WHAT? That is ridiculous. That's like saying "Word documents are usually written in Spanish."
For example, most if not all Canon still cameras that shoot video create AVI files encoded with Motion-JPEG. Any major video-editing app (except Avid) on Windows captures AVIs using the codec of your choice, which would NEVER be MPEG-4 if you know anything about video.
And in fact, MPEG-4 itself isn't just a codec; it's an entire container specification like QuickTime or AVI. You can have video, 3-D models, text, and links in an MPEG-4 file.
People are greatly confused about what is a codec and what is simply a container. QuickTime, Windows Media, and MPEG-4 are containers. The only one that also has a default codec is MPEG-4. - BaldMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is good. I've tried the demo version of the codec and was waiting for my next paycheck to buy a license.
- hashkaran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DO NOT install this. It messed up me QuickTime player.
- benspicer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1to the people that says it messes up your computer:
its a microsoft product (well, actually its not, but hey, its their site) so fear not, it'll be stable, have no bugs whatsoever and do exactly what its supposed to do ;) - seanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As far as I know, AAC is not an Apple codec at all (it stands for Advanced Audio Coding), so there is nothing stopping MS from adding AAC support to Windows Media Player.
- -neon-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nifty, hopefully this will play all the wmv files that choke vlc :)
- tomscott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The program crashes firefox when i try to play a wmv in it, it does the same to safari. When i'd preview a wmv in the finder it would even crash that. After attempting to uninstall and reinstall wmv9 twice, i finally got past the "plugin not found" errors in the browser...
oh did i mention it would crash quicktime randomly (even when i wasn't playing a wmv)?
It isn't the fact that it doesn't work that bothers me, its the fact it screwed up at least 3 other programs, and it took a while to get things back to normal..
And it isn't just me who has these problems, A LOT of other people have had similar or worse issues. Sure it may or may not work for you, but when it doesn't you are screwed. - seanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there are a lot of wmv files out there, it's kind of hard to just ignore them all. i usually pick .mov or .mpg files whenever I can, but sometimes you just have to use media player or flip4mac. It's a good thing Flip4Mac is free now.
- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i've been using this for about a year and it works flawless.
ignor the above poster. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is very welcome news. Perhaps MS feel responsible for the terrible media player they gave us :) But I forgive them as now I can play WM9 etc without having to pay money.
- balazs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How the hell does a dupe make front page!
also it works fine for me. - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This new version allows me to export from QT Pro to another format. The interesting part is that the last version only exported video but not the audio. This version does both!
- WillyWonka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there a version of this for windows? I hate media players lack of a frame by frame advance.
- Prod_Deity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed, but we also need something that plays .avi files with no issues.
- ultimind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CNN Pipeline does ===NOT=== work with this plugin... i kept Windows Media Player installed and have to use Firefox to play back the streaming WMV9 stuff form CNN Pipeline feeds
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0works fine.
both vlc and quicktime player. - rabidjester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Works fairly well, better the Window Media Player for the codecs VLC/Mplayer can't handle. I'm having issues getting CNN Pipeline or Comedy Central clips to play without using Media Player :( No truthiness for me.
- standsolid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*****! $10 for two weeks of use.
- machine82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did nothing but crash safari ever time I ran it. But it's Microsoft so I really didn't expect much anyways.
- G00mper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you have an older Mac, stick with Media Player for wmv files; files definitly take a performance hit when played in quicktime.
- galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course, this may mean the death of WMP for the Mac, too... just a thought (and it wouldn't disappoint me in the least).
- sdwashu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ARRRRG!@! I just bought this 4 days ago!
- einsteindesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had hella troubles with it, but I suspect I'm in the minority. Their other products are great (WMV export via Pro). Too many codecs on my system, methinks.
- jdryyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Before I actually download the link on Microsoft's page, are they providing the trial version or the full release? I have the demo on my PM G5 dual 1.8 and it does what is claims to do, but playback is rather choppy, especially on the HD file I tried. Hopefully, it will get better with age.
Just thought of something-- since iTunes interfaces with Quicktime, does this mean it will be possible to playback .wma files directly in iTunes now? - sdenike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah this works fine for me...
- brentz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is exactly what I've been looking for! My school (Case Western) records a good amount of their lecture classes and posts them online for streaming... but the only problem is that they only stream wmv files! With this plugin I can finally watch the videos on my powerbook!
- paulmetzger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0heh, i dugg the original story and both dupes... still havne't tried it tho.. anyone got any cool wmv files to watch?
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ultimid-
http://img290.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture72db.png - DPowers08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Same problem with me. I've tried playing WMV movies in Safari. They play, but once I press back Safari quits unexpectedly. They don't work in Quicktime correctly either, as that quits after a movie is played. Hopefully a fix will be in effect soon, since this is obviously a problem affecting a decent percentage of users.
- redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I seemed to get really skippy playback on my 1.2 ghz ibook I ended up just going back to windows media player.
- Wings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On Telestream's forums there is a notice that they are aware of some issues in vers 2.0 just released and are working on a fix. The problem, at least in my case, is that it causes QT player to abort when you close the window that the movie is, or was, playing in. Also, exporting the movie generates an error (QT Pro). This is with MacOS 10.4.4 and QT 7.0.4, but perhaps it works fine in previous versions, I dunno.
- SpazMuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When ever I try to close a WMV video playing in Quicktime, not only does the window close but Quicktime unexpectedly closes. Does this happen to any one else?
- cplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is not cool at all. Its just Microsoft doing whatever they can to promote their private format. Could we all please just use standard video formats!
- coldfireonice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah it happened to me! i was watching a movie and l clicked the back button in Safari and it killed safari so i opened it again and tried a different video and it did the same thing
- ham_man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bought this software for 10 dollars when it cost and do not regret it. This is a necessity for any Mac user...
- galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It works for me here (Mac OS X 10.4.4, QT Pro 7.0.4), both in Safari and in QT (perhaps my Pro version is the reason I am not having trouble, but I doubt it somehow). This is just the playback function, not the importer, etc. You can purchase the importer in order to edit, etc., in QT or FInal Cut, etc., but this plug-in will not do that. All things considered, though, it hasn't choked on any of the .wmv I've thrown at it. Kinda cool. Apple should make this one of the resources at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html for folks looking to expand QT's abilities.
- kirktastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bought this last week and got an email from them last night with the announcement of v2 and a coupon code to use with the upgrade within the app for $20 off the version that lets you import it.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I purchased only the playback plug-in awhile back. As long as it can decode the video and audio thru the F4M module, I don't see the problem. With the aid of QT pro I exported the file to divx very easily.
Windows Media Audio 9 Standard, Stereo, 44.100 kHz
Windows Media Video 9 Standard, 320 x 240, Millions - Hidekatsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just the thing I was looking for!!!
- newdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome find, there was no way i was playing $10 bucks for this. dugg
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now all I need is an easy way to play wma, ogg, and flac in iTunes.
- seanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To all those who have had troubles with it, there is a new update released (2.01) - http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17787
- shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great product loving it and now for free BARGAIN!!
- metric152, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They didn't pull media player for mac. It's still available for download.
I'm also having problems using the plug-in. I tested it at gamespot.com. It will play one video fine, but when I try to play another it will crash the browser. I hope they fix this, so far it seems like a really good idea that kinda works. - decades, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"When ever I try to close a WMV video playing in Quicktime, not only does the window close but Quicktime unexpectedly closes. Does this happen to any one else?" (SpazMuffin)
Exactly the same thing happens to me. I'm running 10.4.4 with all the latest trimmings, and Quicktime has never given me any problems before... - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Despite the hatred towards them by the mac community, I think that's extremely cool of Microsoft. By contrast, Apple's in a similar situation with AAC files in WMP, but has done nothing about it.
