- Fallout75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Vista came with software similar to iLife and wasn't such a bloated install, it might be ok. It seems like MAC OSX is light, white and easy where as Vista seems to be dark, heavy, confusing. I'm a windows user, but I think MS could make more of an effort to make the os more exciting.

This is great news, I'll be able to run all 8 versions of Vista on eight separate partitions. Coupled with Sony's rootkits, this will be an awesome user experience. One different flavor of Vista per day. - ketha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is not a repost, as such, but a follow-up. The story is about the post, not the information in the post.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Windows Vista Ultimate - This one is going to be the most expensive, most feature-packed, and perhaps the most pirated edition of Vista. It’ll include new and unique features such as Game Performance Tweaker, Podcast creation utility, online “Club” services and privileged product support. This edition will be perfect for Windows fanboys."
Lol, who wrote that. Digg++ - dotwhynot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>What do they have currently, XP Home, XP Pro, XP Starter, XP Home N, XP Pro N, so whats that 5?
Plus XP MCE and XP Tablet and XP Pro x64. It's 8 editions today. - hordak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think it was widely know, but I definately know that it wasn't a secret that there would be MANY different versions of Vista.
- PercyKittenz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The guys who wrote this article should do some better fact checking. Besides this information having been announced months ago, they also say that Windows is Microsoft's biggest cash cow. To my knowledge, Microsoft makes more money from Office.
- warwicker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We have waited long enough for an updated OS from Microsoft and so far Vista looks like its going to be an awsome upgrade..
- Josephtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The idea of a business version seem cool but 3 consumer versions then an enterprise, then another version of enterprise and business, why can't they make an all in one windows vista? What happened to windows media edition?
- andocom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What do they have currently, XP Home, XP Pro, XP Starter, XP Home N, XP Pro N, so whats that 5?
I really don't see a big deal here, people are talking about this complicating things, such as support and I don't know if I agree, if you have one of the lesser versions you simply wont have some functionality, honestly has there been that much confusion between XP Home and Pro? Not to mention MS will love people calling up wanting extra functionality, pay for it online, and its quickly unlocked.
A lot of people are talking about the various linux distros, you get absolutely everything included, which made me think, well yeah, and how is that working out for them? At the end of the day, if there is one thing I think MS knows how to do its sell their OS to the masses.
Besides, wasn't this known about like 4 months ago via winsupersite? - OperatorNo9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is it here that's news?
Vista reported to have a nightmarish 8 versions? We've know for months.
Microsoft blundered? Nope. Not news.
No news. No digg. - WDot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought it was bad that there was both a WinXP Home and WinXP Professional. Now there's going to be EIGHT versions? But of course everyone's going to want the more expensive ones. I'm going full-time Linux when Vista's released.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"why can't they make an all in one windows vista?"
vista ultimate, it's right there buddy.
.. and who cares, they aren't even final. - CalgaryTechGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Vista = Windows ME 2006
At least there will be a few more Linux and Mac users in the coming years. - ethergy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty much the same info:
http://australianit.news.com.au/articles/0,7204,18234197%5E15306%5E%5Enbv%5E,00.html - relinquish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anybody got this indexed?
- krschuerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will do wonders to help the confusion of regular users. Why can't there just be two (maybe three Home, Pro, Server) versions of Windows? On of the things about OSX that appeals to me is that there are just two versions which makes discussing it and helping people much easier.
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the phrase "much anticipated" is a bit of an overstatement. Given the cost and hardware requirements, as well as it including the next generation of DRM (read, ever more restrictive), I don't see people en masse rushing out to buy it.
- Madguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft will release Vista, but the quantities will be very limited and you'll see auctions on Ebay for $1200 for a copy of Vista.. everyone will be drooling at even getting a glimpse...
...from Bill Gates' fantasy dream...
Reality will be more like a nightmare... Vista released with major security holes, unstable, and less popular than Windows ME. - hellb0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yesterday I got told it was the 3rd time this was posted and today its on the frontpage.. lol
No Digg - Zoplax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
I'm sure this "blunder" was entirely accidental and reveals a whole lot of stuff that Microsoft doesn't want anyone to not hear. - cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0New OS. What ever. Is this thing gonna be better? Dont know. Secure OS. Probably not. Im sticking to XP as long as I can.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't I mark this as lame yesterday... everyone knows that there are going to be multiple version. How is this leak any new information?
- xyritheon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0didnt we already know this??
- bunzai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nothing Microsoft does is by accident. This is another marketing release tactic to hype up Vista. "Oh so I may not need that high performance system to run Vista after all, a light version will be available" blah blah blah...This is to calm the beasts at Microsoft's door step...
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This is great news, I'll be able to run all 8 versions of Vista on eight separate partitions. Coupled with Sony's rootkits, this will be an awesome user experience. One different flavor of Vista per day."
Yes, eight is too many. I'm sure there will be one version that has all the features of all the others. The reason for all the different versions is probably due to a few different factors.
1. The OS will probably come in DVD form, therefore a version must be made CD only.
2. They want to make money off of Home/Pro again, obviously.
3. Dual core version?
4. 64 bit version?
5. Another Media Center Edition?
6. A server edition?
If you look at those, it should be easy to figure out how they might have managed to come up with eight different versions. - mikeod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is old news. They forgot to mention the new 8 flavors of DRM.
- Plopfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is really old news, October 2005 old.....
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2577
Even CNN Money thinks this is news.....wtf.....
http://money.cnn.com/2006/02/21/technology/microsoft_vista_blunder.reut/index.htm?cnn=yes
Also, won't these all be in 32bit or 64bit flavors.....so we're up to 18, maybe 20 versions by now. - tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly, I think it has been know for a while that there were going to be several versions... a few months ago they listed the 8 sku's for it, so this isn't new.... Microsoft trying to mkae money anyway it can.....
- jdaytona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait for it....
media hype.
Who really cares? - j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guess this wasn't the first thing Bill Gates has ever released prematurely.
=) - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1So Vista itself isn't the blunder?
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Shares of Microsoft fell 26 cents to $26.44 in afternoon trade, in line with a near 1 percent decline on the Nasdaq."
Leak. Yeah right. This ain't no leak, he was testing the waters. - Elohir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Oh yeah this'll be an awesome upgrade, just like XP, but with more DRM.
: /
I'll stick to 2k thanks. - soapdev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0http://feedjeff.com/2006/02/21/8-editions-of-microsoft-vista-leaked/
also there - JohnTheLutheran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Interesting. I read the original story last week and people were saying that MS had described it as "inaccurate".
I looked up "inaccurate" in the Encarta Dictionary and got the following definition:
"inaccurate (adj): disclosed in an embarrassing and unwanted manner, and therefore needing to be discredited by misleading public denials". - mikes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I like digg as much as the next guy but do all the storys have to be stolen from slashdot and make it to the homepage the next day? come on
