- HungryMedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2real perdy ... kinda like OS X Finder ;P
- redivider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Waaaaahhh.... MS just updated the look of XP and call it a new OS!
Waaaaahhh... I judge a new OS just by looking at a few screenshots right after I complained that all MS is doing is updating the look of the OS!!!
Waaaaaahhh... I've never used Vista or seen anything it can do outside of the screenshots but I know that its a ripoff of OS X, which is obviously the original OS and didn't borrow any of its own ideas and features from other OSes!
Waaaaahhhh... I want a completely new way to interact with my computer and I've decided that MS is responsible for giving it to me, regardless of the fact that they have to consider the other 800 million people out there that use the OS and may have a different opinion than me. As long as I'm happy with it, they'll just have to deal with the other 99.9999% of the users not being happy! - Jicksta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's funny is a lot of these guys posting here calling Microsoft "M$," complaining about the icons, using the word "thier" instead of "they're," and calling it "a joke" are going to be the exact people that become Vista fan boys when it debuts. When it's released, it'll become a fashion trend for computers -- something that's "cool" to have for flashiness and bragging rights.
I'm content with Linux's small market share. We get fewer morons. - Panzerfaust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0,1205,l=&s=26945&a=156757&po=1,00.asp
Good grief. Are they intent to make setting up proper user accounts a major pain in the ass? Is is THAT hard to ask for the admin password right there and then? Come on.
Same *****, different OS. - Smoktiludy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I need more than this to switch.
- diciodoins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can I borrow someones MSDN subscription to download this?
- scorwitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What the hell is it, Longhorn or Vista?!
- BulkHedd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Panzer, look at this one:

- dfj225, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From what I know about Vista right now, I'm really kind of dissapointed. It doesn't seem like Microsoft is really innovating on any front any more.
The only real category that I seem them ahead of everyone else is the tabletPC market. Only there does their software really seem better than anything else that you can get.
I guess I'll have to wait until some beta testers check this out to see what features are really in there, but from the first glance, it really doesn't seem like they updated anything. The new interface does look better than XP to me, but in the one shot with lots of open windows, it seems to me that it is hard to see where one stops and the other begins because the borders are transparent.
Microsoft, where is the innovation that you talk about? Not in Vista it seems. - oxigen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's so painfully obvious how with vista, microsoft is completely copying from MacOS X. I mean, come on, check out the explorer windows now. Virtual folders - swiped from apple. At least windows users will get a better OS. Anyone know how much it will cost? $500 maybe?
- bobetr, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0Wow. I really like it, it looks nice and clean. And more stable. But thats just looks. And the only screens I've seen seem to be from a laptop because of the power icon in the corner. What I want to see is it on a desktop, with startup, and use. Like a video. But not in wmv format. In h.264. As well as all of the requirments and installation. I wan tot see all of it. I want to see someone try to install an old game, and install a new game. I want it all from Microsoft.
- phi0x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well for anyone who cares about the Vista Beta 1 release I have setup a nice package for either adding the package to the ISO image if you have one of Vista Beta 1 or to just download it and have the basic stuff to get your Vista Beta 1 system setup properly and running with the right software/drivers. Here is the link to my package: http://www.omegaservers.com/vista.zip
It has ati drivers, nvidia video card drivers, nvidia mobo drivers, audio drivers, a Vista tweaking program which has cool features such as for people with directx - ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow that Xp beta looked like crap...lol...I def. think we all need to chill, its a ***** beta 1 jesus. Everyone is so god damn quick to bash Microsoft. I think theres a few promising features that may set it apart from XP. Its so damn trendy to trash Microsoft...
- wileefilmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Installed it which took ~90minutes. The interface is slightly better than XP, but besides that I can't seem to find the 4+ years worth of improvements. My network adaptor was not recognized so I "switched" back to XP.
- mrmatchgame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't really see the diffrence(few here and there), I'll stick with XP for a while.
- reeprflame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows Server 2k3 was based on Windows XP with almost the same codebase - so in short, no it won't be much more secure.
- diggity_dank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ProAm500: "Its so damn trendy to trash Microsoft"
Yeah poor old Microsoft... so hard done by! It's not a "trend" anymore if it's been around for 10+ years.
They've done it to themselves by subjecting us to utterly craptacular bloatware, by being megalomaniacal morons, and by trying to force everyone to their standards instead of adopting industry standards that help everyone.
It's only "trendy" to bash M$ because they are so damn bash-worthy! - Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my only complaint is...WHY DOES THE RECYCLE BIN LOOK LIKE A DAMN CUP!?
the transparent window borders are starting to grow on me though.. - kydd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks like crap!!, xp looks way better, i hope it performs much better, or ill be sticking with xp, untill they force me over to vista, thats when i transfer to mac.
- persecuted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like a skinned version of Xp with a few MINOR changes. Its windoze ME all over again.
- digit9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"When it's released, it'll become a fashion trend for computers -- something that's "cool" to have for flashiness and bragging rights." Jicksta, are you serious? Do you think Vista will become trendy? Maybe in a MTV kind of way.
IMO, I am still not gee whizzed by Vista and it's not just the screenshots.
So what's under the hood of this beast? Did I read somewhere that they are removing CMD and moving to another shell that's more easily scriptable? For me that's what sold me on the Mac and OSX is that I have a strong OS under the hood. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Beautiful GUI
- mikelorette, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0woot, looks mighty flashy
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks good to me. It's built from Windows 2003, not XP, so that should get some more security features, at least I hope.
- gtskhaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. $300 for Spotlight and translucent windows. The marketing team is going to need to order plenty of Windows Vista Logo Beach Towels to soak up the flop sweat in Redmond.
- maxmojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just a thought, if you don't like the look, don't but it. Saves you $299.00 and saves me from hearing you bitch that it doesn't look like windows 2000. In short, you minimalist bitches can suck it.
- tanker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys are neglecting to note that Beta 1 releases of all Microsoft OS only tests the engine and code. The UI is updated later.
- achtunga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0,1205,l=&s=26945&a=156757&po=40,00.asp
Pure proof they gave XP a face lift. =D
I'm a big fan of Linux and use it, but I'm not one of those people that say Windows/Microsoft sucks because everyone else does. I think they do an OK/decent job on some things. Although, I have no idea how Longhorn Beta/Vista is, because I don't have the beta. By the way, the XP+face lift was a joke.
http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0,1205,l=&s=26945&a=156757&po=16,00.asp is kind of funny. I don't know why, it just is. - _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just like someone on Neowin said, I think some people need to see what Beta 1 of XP looked like:
http://winsupersite.com/images/reviews/whistler_beta1_0001.gif
Things change dramatically before release. Don't judge too much based on these screenshots. - vincenzothavise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to everyone who is saying "it looks tight" or "it looks pretty"
yeah it does. but it doesn't look too much different than what you can do with styleXP today. So yeah, i hope performance disgusting...meaning SUPER. - searse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what ^ said
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Other than the cosmetic changes, it looks like Microsoft has done absolutley nothing at all to change the functionality of the OS. It really, really looks like somebody just skinned the thing. What happened to our fully 3-d, immersive OS? That's it, I'm going to Apple
- thetonio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0,1205,l=&s=26945&a=156757&po=16,00.asp
I like that screenshot. Perhaps this time around, Windows will be smarter, and will try to solve a problem that may be hanging a program, instead of just killing it off.
THAT would be innovative, and I'm hoping it works well, and that there are more things like this in the OS. - thetonio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For all of you who were complaining about having to sign in to your Administrative account...
http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0,1205,l=&s=26945&a=156757&po=26,00.asp
Looks like you'll be able to do it within your user. - thetonio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sure, I've skinned it to look like that, but there's a lot more to those screenshots that add to the aesthetics that aren't in styleXP.
- matriculated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, my eyes hurt...
- phoenixd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Forevergeek.com has a mirror of some of the images as well.
Looks like the Longhorn release (though I guess the longhorn pictures that came out a while back were for a later release). - TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Until you try it, don't rag on it. The os is easy to get in to and features several changes that are new to Windows.
- tallguy14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks pretty good to me...but we'll see how the performace is
- pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know much but, i have heard a lot of you talk about this search feature. Wouldn't it make sense just to keep your stuff organized in the first place? Sure it looks cool but who cares. I am sure a lot do. I think a lot of people are thinking whats the big deal? As am I. I have not heard anything about handy new features, So it's 3D, so it has different search function. And what else?
- xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My god that looks UGLY...
- modeps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll be sticking with XP for a while.
- suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0new name stille ugly
- darrenism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think Vista is revolutionary enough to warranty large-scale upgrading. In my opinion, too much glitz on the desktop leads to confusion for the average user in a corporate environment. If it is actually SECURE and IE won't get constantly hijacked then I would use it, but the same fixes should be applied to XP anyways. Waste of $
- darrenism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol Jicksta.. I like that Linux slogan.
- pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And yes that was firefox.
- sovereign3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am less than impressed. The GUI is eerily similar to XP (can anyone point out any differences?). The nifty little folders are cool feature, but it's all frills and doesn't do much else. It seems as though it's a hash of everything that's cool about non-Microsoft products, i.e. live folders. Years of unwarranted hype and development and this is what we get? I'm glad it's not very impressive right now. I don't look foward to having to buy a new computer just so I can have the latest OS from Microsoft.
I'll be sticking with XP for a while. Heck, I'd go with Linux before switching to this new Vista.
-JB - keefer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just looks like XP with a facelift IMHO.
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks better than XP, but that's not a stretch. It better have some serious unseen improvements, because these screenshots show nothing new but different eye candy.
