- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51Certainly an improvement over the old one. Im sure people with lower system specs will be glad.
- MikeSD34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34I have to wonder though, how does the blue fit in with the black task-bar? Seems rather inconsistent.
- JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Have they not heard of image thumbnails?
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Looks slightly better. Anything's better than the mess they shipped in beta 2
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15@jer2eydevil88
any reason for the gaussian blur on your screenshot? - techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Umm, I'm still wondering what the big deal is about being able to see thru the title bar of windows.
Heh. Only things I see useful in Aero are the Expose-like things. Finding windows etc. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Because, you know, nothing has changed since the release of Windows XP. Nothing at all.
- DiGiTaLFX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Better but I don't think its uniform enough. Why aren't the close/max/min buttons in the same place on the 2 themes? Surely they should try make them look identical in all ways excluding things such as transparency.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Exceeeeept no distro ships with that.
- pipdip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Was I drunk when I wrote that? So many errors. :) English is my first language, I swear.
- t3hj03, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Its a bit ironic that the screenshot they forgot to resize has a folder open displaying.... image thumbnails. What a concept!
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Thanks for showing off your ignorance. I'm sure someone will provide you with about 50 links showing the restructured kernel, etc in Vista.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -13/+20Incoming Windows-bashing open source fanboys in 3..2..1..
- dergachev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Note that you can access "full screen" screenshots by simply dragging the image to the location bar. These images have been resized in HTML to fit on the page, and as a result look distorted. For the lazy, in full size goodness:

- kmgrant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm not sure why Microsoft went to all the trouble to make changes, when they still haven't addressed core usability problems. They're still too focused on making it look "cool" to compete with Apple.
One *huge* problem is that active and inactive windows look exactly the same to me. Someone should post a screenshot with 20 windows open and this would be, er, clear. - emlodnaor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10i am the only one still using the windows classic theme, and don't like any of that "eye-candy"... simplicity is best...
- bieber, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I think it's just ***** JPEG compression...
- theonlyvlad, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12actually agreed. I've been a windows user most of my life, use macs at school for video editing and such, and have been usuing Ubuntu for the past 2 months. My favorite GUI right now is Gnome, actually, for its simplicity, and visual look (i found a theme i liked too). Add XGL to that, and mmmm... Vista in my opinion is also very pretty, although a bit too cluttered -- ie, if oyu have a hi rez monitor you don't care, but... Mac, well, OSX never struck me as particularly appealing. Yet this is an opinion of taste, similar to "I like chocolate"
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Still, the only GUI that rivals Vista's is Xgl/Compiz (admittedly, that one might even be a little bit better).
That said, I don't think BioCS.Nerd himself thinks that Windows is ugly. Now, if it were to suddenly become open source, then, somehow, it would look a lot nicer, wouldn't it? - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Any improvement is nice, but it would be better if you could just put in your own themes or put in downloaded themes, without having to hack Windows.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14It looks awful. I'm just glad that I am upgrading my computer at around the time Vista comes out anyway (the upgrade is unrelated to Vista, it just happened to coincide) so I won't be stuck with that bare design.
The glass theme is a tiny bit better, but is also not very good. I've tried a clone using WIndowBlinds (looks exactly the same, except instead of transparent blurring of Aero, the titlebars use simple alpha transparency), and the usability is just awful. - chris86wm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8hopefully we will continue to see improvements.
- fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Im pretty sure their graphics team dosent work on the code.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+21Still ugly.
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well you can modify almost any aspect of the GUI in XP so I would bet that you will be able to modify Vista's look one way or another.
Right now my XP looks like this:
http://img343.imageshack.us/img343/351/untitled17do.jpg - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I wouldn't say it is prettier, but it's certainly close or as pretty. I haven't had a chance to use Vista properly yet, so I'm not sure if the transparent window surrounds will bug me or not, so this is just my first impression.
- Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There are options in Aero to specify ANY color you want. There are several presets you can choose from, plus there are sliders to pick the hue and transparency and something else I can't remember now (saturation, probably) to pick anything you want. The white was just default. So it looks like they changed the default a little bit. It looks neat, but I kinda liked the old one....
oops, wanted to edit, no time - Latka, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Yes, slightly better... the previous one was very awful, and this one is just awful.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think it looks really bad.
1. Too many colors. Black, blue, red, rainbow gradients. MS, do you have a colorblind GUI designer?
2. The rectangular buttons don't look right. They should be full-sized like in XP. Or round like in OS X. But MS can't exactly do that, can they? Why did they put the buttons in the center anyway? Why not keep them the same as Aero? Is that a "feature"?
3. Watercolor was the best theme MS ever made. It was well suited for the Windows identity. Simple, clean, professional. It's been downhill ever since--first XP's romper room look, now Vista's WTF? look. - cavicster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I use the classic theme as well. I cannot stand the Fisher Price theme.
- SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/vista/kernel-en.mspx
get off his nuts - kortiz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I think its fine, but then again Im not a whiny little girl
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4all they would have to do is re-render the bitmaps with the new hue/saturating upon clicking "ok". that would cause a short before the new theme appear. afterwords it would not tax the system any more than the standard theme colors did.
- farr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'd be happy if they just ditch all the freaking teal everywhere... =|
- traviswalters, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You're welcome. Seriously though, name a feature that's new and exciting you couldn't do before? I've been playing with Vista and I was literally most excited about the new clock, just because I can have 3 and they don't look like the clocks from Windows 3.1.
- palakt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6doom 2?
- dSlifer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I was worried that they were going to stick with that boring gray, I thought it was like Win XP, either how you had the playskool bar, or the Classic bar, which was a boring tan unless you changed the colors yourself....
I'm just waiting for the screenshots of people already running Vista to apply Vista skins with WinCustomize because they don't know the Aero-Glass backdoor and Vista rates their system low.... At least I think it will be funny... - joeysafe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I wish you could choose from the two, but it sounds like you can't. I sort of like the old one, but I would definitely like to try them both out and then pick...
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3want to know something interesting ? in none of those screenshots is a window selected, the person has just clicked somewhere on the desktop.
how can i tell ? i've tested some betas and if you look in the taskbar, both app titles look the same, yet when one is the 'active' window, it looks different in the taskbar.
do you -honestly- think they would miss something as obvious as the user knowing which window was the active one ? they've known since win 3.1, seriously. - diggeddugg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How do you get these effects (e.g. taskbar). Thanks.
- kmgrant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Are you comparing to any particular version of Mac OS X, or all of them? I'm just curious, as Apple's visuals have changed significantly in 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4. I have tended to like Mac OS X's look better with each revision.
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks. Nice to see that people agree with my taste :)
The BG was made by me. It can be found on my deviantart page here: http://www.deviantart.com/view/27048607/
To get the windows theme, you need to download and install this package: http://www.tcmagazine.info/modules.php?modid=4&action=show&id=403
Contrary to the name, it is not just vista themes. It has a whole bunch. The one I'm using is called Luna. The installer also comes with a little app that makes glass, and one for the vista sidebar, but I chose not to use them. The icons are part of the theme. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2beta site
- Fett101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's sad that people actually thumbs down these comments. Some people prefer usability and speed over pretty taskbars. Gray boxes look good to me. I get more usable screen space and free resources with classic.
- burjzyntski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had one of the Longhorn alpha builds and I liked the standard theme that came with it. It was a nice shade of gray-blue, not transparent like this one, but it looked better IMO.
- luchid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Me likey.... Care to share you BG, icons and theme, please? :D
- iandotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MS really needs to get into gear for the Aero Basic theme, keeping the equal amount of work thats been put into the glass. Looking at the high specs required to get the glass-effects on, and the amount of everyday computer users who would be looking to upgrade or cough up for a new computer, it might be in high use. The screenshots show a really good revision though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Same here. First thing I do when I have to use a Windows box is go into the preferences and disable the "XP" styled theme. I go back to classic (no rounded corners or shiny *****). Then I select the "classic" color thing (that you're familiar with from Windows 95/NT/etc).
For one thing, you get a lot more real-estate that way. -
