- benwaterworth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15yes. i'm going to trust microsoft with my data. i can't even trust microsoft's software to look after my data when it's in my own house!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'm not sure what application this will be useful with. Google pages gives me 100 megs of storage space, gmail gives me 10 x 230 megs, all for free. The problem is - if you need more than this you need a nice fat pipe and most home users will not.
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Nice. Now MS dosen't have to build back doors into its OS to get to our data.

No, I don't put anything on GDrive either. - kylebeckman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Encrypt it with TrueCrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org)
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15If it's true to the MS name, it'll be short on features, short on capacity, the userbase will be perpetually screwed, but they will never actually leave for something better because it'd be too challenging.
- pacificdave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11nice... obviously competition brings innovation. Go Gdrive Rumor!
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Makes sense... when MS was trying out OSX to get ideas for Vista they noticed that .MAC was pretty cool.
I can't wait for the mPod, mPod Video and mPod Nano. - benwaterworth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8i can see the use for it as i have a laptop which i use at various places connecting to the net. home, friends, uni, work.
so not having to take around a 250gb hard drive is pretty handy.
i'd just rather a service i could trust - benwaterworth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7.Mac? been around for quite a while
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wonder if or when they go forward that the server farms will end up having linux run them. heheh
- Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Microsoft and Yahoo handed over all the data that the US government recently requested of them without any fight.
Google was the only one that fought for the privacy of it's users.
People are more excited about Google offering a service like this with good reason. - DragonQuester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i wonder how long it would take for someone to hack into that and steal everyones personal data...that would suck.
- blaksaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No thanks. I'll wait for gDrive.
- detrux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Microsoft's new business plan: copy Google.
- peterjhill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6apple iDisk? webdav is so 2 years ago msn.. welcome to internet services world
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'll trust Google with my data but NOT Microsoft.
- aptmunich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3.mac says what?
- ers35, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Google Drive anyone?
- ghast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6so microsoft is providing an innovative new way to access your data which has been available to mac users for years in the form of .mac?
- radixus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That and also they won't have to write laws granting them permission to gather any sort of information on you. They'll just be able to access it on your virtual drive. Just pop in the correct writting in the EULA agreement and they'll be golden :)
- Kuipo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Possibly that nowhere in the story does it mention .mac that's already been doing this for a while now, but it DOES mention Gdrive... a service still in development.
- mp817, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This sounds similar to something we use on Apples in school...Universal Locker. Holds One gig of information I believe. We use it to store all of our documents that we need for classses.
- Kuipo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Watch it only work for registered users of a version of WindowsXP or above.. when Google rolls out Gdrive and anyone on any OS can use it.
- birdwatcher3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hardware Firewall
- SonnyW, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Depending on how reliable it will be, this could be awesome for backing up stuff.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder if they can some how use this to expand the 360 storage. It would be great to get to any of my game files or arcade games from any ones 360 by logging on to my account.
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft once again proves that they can't innovate; only copy. I swear, they're like the cheap Chinese knock-off of online services.
- wideawakewesley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They've been developing this for longer than Google have (apparently), so who's copying who?
Just because you get your press release out first does not mean you were the company who came up with the idea first. - mephitix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6"this board is so kneejerk biased against MS sometimes it's ridiculous"
- totally agree. As much as people bash MS for their security issues and whatnot and "oogle over google" for their various services, they also fail to realize that MS has had lots of success. MS also knows its users very well. That's why you see Windows XP on almost any PC you see out there -- because their stuff is usable and intuitive. Sure, there are some shortcomings, I'll consent to that. But if you're talking about 'userbase', go and look at Microsoft's userbase and tell me that a ***** of people don't use Windows XP. Go play an X-Box and tell me it's short on capacity. Go try Office 12 and tell me that it's short on features.
I like google and I think the stuff they release is amazing (I love Google Calendar, btw) but come on, competition drives innovation. Don't knock something before it gets released. That's just sad. - wideawakewesley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Live Drive is a Windows Live service. Windows Live services when released will run in any web browser (yes, even standards compliant ones) and therefore this service will be available to anyone with a Windows Live ID (aka the new Microsoft Passport system), which is NOT reliant on you have a hotmail/windows live mail account.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yeah, good thing Digg is a British website.
- illfollowyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that would be good b/c you can access it from any where
- humbledstrength, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that man needs to buy some pants!
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/437967.stm
- oyourmom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it just me or is "Life Drive" already copyrighted by Palm! I guess M$ will buy that also...
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4i suspect that its just microsoft playing catch up to apple. .mac service is great because my mom can click one button in iphoto and publish a picture and send a note to anyone that cares.
MS seees apple building the new data center so that means one thing. apple is jumping out front of the next rev. web. it must be frustrating to be stinking rich and be able to buy anyone or anything (except a Mac users) and still put out a cluttered gaudy OS thats leaky as a sieve. so... microsoft had a meeting this morning and made an annoucement. they'll figure it out later. i mean... if apple and google can do it... :D :D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I fail to see the point in the service... be it M$, Google or whatever.... Are people just having a hard time holding all of their pron or pictures of the pet dog? How much is a HDD running? What about CD-Rs or DVD-Rs? Or even an USB thumb drive? What reason would I need to outsource my storage when it can be done by myself for pennies?
- Kermee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4As with any "Live Drive" service, I'm crossing my fingers that someone will write a nice "plug-in" to transparently PGP/GPG real-time your data before it's "copied" to your "live drive". I'd help support development of that.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very inspired of them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm picturing the go-ahead meeting on this...
"iDrive? Live Disk? Ah, I've got it! Live Drive!" - Overdo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5You think something like this can be developed in such a short period of time after a competitor announces it?
- whiteboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Quit with all the "boohoo, like I'd trust Microsoft with my personal data" *****. You shouldn't keep stuff _that_ important on an "internet drive" anyways. I support Microsoft for whatever they might do. Why isn't there another operating system as dominant as Windows? Because Microsoft made a fantastic product. Windows rules, and you know it. So stop all your Microsoft bitching, it's so old...
- diggrags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0online storage is nothing new. It has been around for many years now. Larger players have tried to exploit this field (remember briefcase by yahoo?) to limited success. The issue is not really that there are no takers. There are plenty. But with the slow internet upload bandwidth inspite of widespread adoptation of broadband, very little data be pushed. It is no comparison to moving data around on your LAN. Only services like IBackup (http://www.ibackup.com) have had some degree of success with their optimizing technologies to push maximum data through the slow upload pipes by doing wire compression, patching and offering a variety of options to manipulate data on the web. My point is that Microsoft's livedrive or google's gdrive will have limited success for many years until the underlying infrastructure actually picks up and is able to push large amount of data, either way.
- sheared, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The more places that I can back up family pictures and video, the better. I'll be uploading to as many free services as I can find (especially ones that don't try to share them with the world).
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3maybe google always beats their competitors so they will relase like 3 GBs of free storage when this comes out
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Way to go, Microsoft. This is an area that has been overlooked for too long. This should stir up some competition from Google and others and in the end the user will always benefit.
Very exciting. - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7But I can't put my warez there...
What the hell is the use of this? - toxicredm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's probably why it's "Live Drive" not "Life Drive"
- templest, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Can you really trust Microsoft to store your data on-line securely? And I'm not just talking about hackers or virii, I don't trust them to store my personal files on their servers and it maintaining complete privacy. Some things are just not meant to go on-line. Besides, on-line storage isn't practicle yet. Slow / unstable connections, etc. This reminds me of the whole AJAX-based word-processors. Sure, they're handy, and nice, but if your net goes down: No word-processing for you.
- pbromberg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2If you are smart, pal, you won't trust ANYBODY with your data. It ain't about Microsoft vs. Google.
