- Zephiron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8When Microsoft does it, its bad business.
When Firefox does it, it's clever. - himey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Finally. It really pissed me off that Microsoft obviously designed it not to work with Firefox. Great to now have that ability. Thanks digitalgopher!!
- jakebechtold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6That was such a pain when I bought my reader. Problem solved.
+ Digg - detrux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4but is it secure? I get nervous using a 3rd party extension that can potentially copy all of my passwords.. biometric or other
- jakv5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Fingerprinting security measures are a bad idea. If someone steals your credit card Visa issues you a new one, if you loose your keys you change the locks and get new keys.
What happens if someone steals your fingerprint? Are you going to chop off your finger and wait for Microsoft to send you a new one? How long before someone makes a fingerprint logger similar to a keystroke logger?
How can one steal your fingerprint? Read this:

- ServAce85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've downloaded and installed multiple times and restarted firefox and my computer multiple times... it's still not working. Any ideas? i dont see a fingerfox thing at the bottom of firefox but in the extensions menu it says that it is loaded and it "Permits the use of the MS Fingerprint Reader with Firefox," translated from french. Help please.
- jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Before microsoft bought (it from?) the company that originally made it, it worked just fine with 3rd party apps including firefox.
- tange1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FINALLY, this is what was holding me back from buying one.
- nathanmock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Clicking the link seems to just open the 'open dialog' menu. Those looking to install, can just save it to their desktop and drag it into Firefox.
By the way, here's a direct link to the english version of the author's page of the extension:

- bmooney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fingerfox does work... Been using it for a few days now... Once installed, be sure to restart firefox or even possibly reboot... but once it works, it works...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I wish the finger print reader worked with my mac. Stupid Microsoft
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2kept mine on a box for 1 year waiting for something like this to come out.
- porkmonkeys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It doesnt seem that this works with the Thinkpad fingerprint reader.... Does anyone know an extension that will work with the Thinkpad reader?
- orangekid13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the page links to a google-translated instruction page
It works, but it is pretty screwy... you click the "fingerfox" thing on your bottom toolbar and then use your fingerprint wizard to have it fill that in, and it will launch the window automatically if you want. It's not a full integration, it's just, as they put it, a "workaround".
I lock my computer when i walk away or it locks itself on screensaver, and i use my fingerprint reader to log back in, and just have firefox remember all my passwords. I keep my dorm locked so security isn't a huge deal for me - raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Looks like microsoft only.
- tange1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Could anyone verify it works, it doesn't appear to be in english...
- rwheeler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1will this work with my thinkpad's fingerprint reader, or is this for MS only?
- pufuwozu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too bad the fingerprint reader doesn't encrypt the fingerprint data.
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1wrong, ms didn't encrypt it. its not secure. its for convenience only, not security.
- tange1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In response to the guy who posted about 'stealing your finger print':
I dont think you understand the technology. When your finger is registered a algorithim is apply'd to it and its stored as points (not as a finger print that you or I would think of). If for some reason that one was stolen all you would have to do is re-register your finger print and it would be slightly different. Different enough that the old one would no longer be accepted. Yes I know this sounds like BS but i've done a lot of work on biometrics recently. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool! I've been eyeing off that fingerprint reader for some time! Finally, an excuse to buy one!
(I must say though, I've always been amused by the fine print on the box (in the Australian versions at least) that says something to the effect of "you shouldn't use this fingerprint reader for anything that you *really* need to keep secure"!!!)

I'm doing a Masters degree at an Australian University, researching
business adoption of Free and Open Source Software. Please help by
taking my survey at survey.threefiddy.com. Thanks! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any idea if the reader can be used to work with Roboform from www.roboform.com?
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1His dad needs to use firefox so he can use the fingerprint password to protect people form your comment.
- TheOneill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm the developer of that little extension, I see that some of you (maybe most of you :) are experiencing problems with Fingerfox. I've just opened a forum here http://redoneill.free.fr/fingerfox/forum/ so that users can expose their problems. As Fingerfox is in early phase of development, I guess it may be buggy... So feel free to post in that forum or to send me an email (see email address at the bottom of Fingerfox home page) it will help me to improve that tool.
Bye ! - SKYNETRP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, so call me stupid, but someone PLEASE explain to me how to "drag" the software into Firefox? And what exactly do I "drag"? There is NO .exe file.
One more thing you guys may not have thought about............who is this guy who made this extension? If he is a good programmer, he could have easily placed a "sniffer" in this extension and is getting ALL of your passwords.......ever thought of that? It's the ONLY way to break the security of this reader. The original reader made by the original company cannot be hacked like this one can due to the fact that the fingerprint is encrypted BEFORE it is sent to the computer, making it a very secure reader. Microsoft made a HUGE mistake by not encrypting the fingerprint.
So lets hear your comments, and please tell me what I need to do to get it to work with Firefox, thanks. - geona1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone know if any other brand of fingerprint reader works with Firefox besides the Microsoft one with the workaround?
- hlynch1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1kinda ghetto but i like it
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's because Microsoft also redesigned it to work better with their software and OS for obvious reasons. They didn't have to put in Firefox support so they didn't. Not like they prevented an extension like this from being made though, so why do people bitch? =(
- evanm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2doesn't really work.. the app was poory written. others have been having problems with this (see gizmodo)
- SKYNETRP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, I have another question.....is there a way that WE can encrypt the fingerprint before it is sent to the computer? Is there software that can do that?
- Chelli, on 10/25/2007, -0/+0I downloaded and installed the extension above for firefov and it still doesn't work get the same logon screen error msg
- Chelli, on 10/25/2007, -0/+0well will it ever be used with roboforn data so it doesn't need to retyped all over again
- SKYNETRP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want to add this to the facts about the reader and stealing fingerprints.........you cannot take a print off of a can or bottle and use it, nor can you digitally reproduce the print........they are both considered "latent" prints and the software has a security system that will not allow latent fingerprints. You MUST place your finger on the reader for it to even be considered by the software. And from what I understand, even if you are hacked by a sniffer, the hacker has to physically connect a second computer (not via PC NOW or a trojan or anything like that) to your computer to get it to work..........that sounds pretty damned secure to me.
- willij, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I sold mine on ebay because it did not work with Firefox.
- wiltonr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0There's a new fingerprint password manager extension for Firefox: check out http://www.fingerauth.com.
- Dangeresque, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The article's short and not clear. So does this prompt for a fingerprint when the app is started, or when you enter a password, because if the user was prompted for a fingerprint when a password was required, wouldn't it become very unsecure, simply because people could uninstall the extention before surfing?
- longzheng, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4It's called common sense.
You don't do things that will benefit your competitors.
And also, Microsoft didn't DESIGN it not to work with Firefox. It was designed to work with the Windows Security Logon window, which is used by Internet Explorer. Obviously Firefox didn't that, therefore, incompatiability. However, Microsoft didn't lock-out any third party tools that tried to add functionality, like this one in particular. - cmacb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Someone gave me one of these after I'd already dumped Windows. So I had to find a Windows luser (errr user) to pass it on to. Looked like a nice toy otherwise.
