- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Dont liek the mac stories? remove the Apple section from your views. then you can justly complain when something shows up in the wrong catagory.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15DiggMac? are you insane
it will be iDigg ofcourse - nostartnoend, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Apple computer users might only be a small percentage of the PC market share, but I find that they often tend to be the most willing to experiment with practical new technology and paradigms and usher them into the mainstream. Which might explain their overwhelming presence here on Digg.
- satansbanjo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Transmission is ok, but we seriously need some better OS X bittorrent apps - like uTorrent but for Mac. And it needs to be universal
- fenster8, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Agreed. Although this week I started using uTorrent via crossover and got better speeds than transmission.
First post ever - shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I never reallized how good utorrent is until I didn't have it on the mac, it may actually be the reason I still have a PC. Broadcatching baby.
- noliberalbull, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, transmission is my default. Azureus is way to slow for me on Mac... it drives me nuts. Bits on Wheels I used for awhile, and I like the visuals, but, as they mentioned, it hasn't been updated in forever, and it desperately needs it.
- ShiverMeBoner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you have a server or extra desktop computer you can install Azureus on it and then remotely control it on your Mac with a widget. This works great if you have a laptop.
http://andrewdupont.net/azureus/
I do this and it works great because I don't pause my download every time I close my MBP. - Sheir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I use Transmission, Azureus has an annoying interface and uses up a decent amount of RAM, plus I don't need any special features.
Something about the article bugged me, it said that Transmission had been occasionally banned from Demonoid. I've been using Transmission since I got my Mac, as well as Demonoid, and I've never had problems. Mind you, it's only been a few months, but I wouldn't worry about it. - siMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Talking about Mac apps here. It's relatively simple, please try to keep up.
- Sheir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, Transmission scans for peers too often, to get you the best possible speeds. The problem with this is that it puts a strain on the server. They should really fix this, but honestly, OiNK is filled with pretentious douche bags, so ***** 'em.
Wow that got really mean towards the end, there. - Dakoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oink banned it because transmission wasnt blocking peers that constantly send bad data, therefore wasting bandwidth (one example said something like a client downloaded 2GB of bad data for a 20MB torrent)
this bug was fixed though, although i dont use oink so i dont know if its still banned - NonPC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it's all very subjective. I've used them all and I find Bits On Wheels to be the best.
- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Like charts. Charts are incredibly useful for getting files onto your computer. (not)
- adam84a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just tried out bits on wheels yesterday, and it worked pretty well.
- dethl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Azureus wins hands down simply because of the encryption. I'm behind a campus firewall and packet shaper. With encryption on I get speeds of over 100k/sec where it used to be around 10k/sec due to filtering.
- ShiverMeBoner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Dakoman,
That's why you are just running a widget on your Mac, which takes up practicaly zero resources. Azureus is running on your extra desktop computer that does all the work. - wphj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use Transmission, but I'm going to check out Bits on Wheels.
All I need is an app that quickly and easily downloads what I need. - noliberalbull, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5stick with transmission then. BoW is interesting, and its okay to use, but Transmission is certainly simpler, and more stable.
- Dakoman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i still prefer running transmission. when im runnin azureus im constantly thinking "if i quit azureus my system would be running so much faster right now"
with transmission, even when i've got three 4GB torrents seeding, its using 25mb of ram and 3.5% CPU. - snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The last time i checked OiNK had banned Transmission, quite a shame really for such a nice application to have one real flaw which renders it unusable on many of the best trackers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"DiggMac? are you insane
it will be iDigg ofcourse"
or MacDigg Pro - mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Besides that problem, which was obviously an error, Oink and Demonoid both ban Transmission for the same reason (something like): it asks for an updated tracker list too frequently, and supposedly this hammers the tracker. The programmers of Transmission say this is done on purpose, and that the only thing it will result in is faster downloads for the users, but Oink believes it causes unnecessary hammering of their trackers and bandwdith.
What I know is that, though it may result in faster downloads, no other bittorrent client does this, and so I don't think Transmission should. Downloads seem fast enough on other clients too. Hopefully everyone will ban Transmission until the developers change their ways, and let it be accepted into the community again. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use azureus, mainly because i've got 2gb of ram and i'm on a macbook pro so speed isn't really a problem. It handles azureus plus a load of other apps no sweat.
- roundy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As it says in the comments to the article, Transmission misreports your upload/download statistics. It got my account disabled from one members-only tracker before I figured it out. My statistics was something like 900gb uploaded. After using Transmission for a few weeks, the tracker had my upload amount recorded as 20megs. I went from a 1.8 ratio to 0.002. Apparently, this bug is known to Transmissions developers and they don't want to fix it.
Anyway, Transmission is a nice torrent app. I really liked it until I got bit by this stupid bug. I'm back to Azureus now. FWTW, I haven't noticed Transmission to be any faster or slower than Azureus in downloading torrents. I do think that Azureus is a bit of overkill for many users. Too many features. Bad interface. On the other hand, I think Transmission is a bit too simple. No control over individual torrent upload/download speeds, for example.
Bottomline is, if you are on a private tracker, stay away from Transmission. - ravenscry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I only use transmission. no alternative.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3were you using a more recent nightly build? its updated pretty frequently
http://chucker.mystfans.com/opensource/transmission/ - chix0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Transmission was way too slow for me...It would never start popular well seeded torrents b/c demonoid blocked them. I found this annoying, so I went to the new BitComet (not mentioned in this article b/c it was not out yet) which was insanely slow, so now i'm trying the official BitTorrent one with little success of even getting the torrents to start! I'm thinking of just going back to Transmission and just use Bittorrent for the demonoid torrents.
- adam84a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That looks pretty friggin cool
- Skeets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't read anything about encryption. Is there a light weight BitTorrent client for MacOSX that offers this feature?
- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Thats about right...
I tried Transmission for a while, but now I'm back on Azureus... the interface is slow, but there are so many useful features that I can't get away from it. - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Azureus on the Mac is slow(er), but if you right-click the dock icon and select hide, it just disappears and its memory usage also drops. It's like minimizing on Windows, but better.
- mackdaddy187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I installed the Crossover beta on my mac just to use uTorrent. I used every mac client and because my ISP (Rogers) throttles the speeds down, I would barely get over 20 KB/s of total download speed. And my package is a 5 Mbps download one. Now i get decent speeds. And if I am lucky the speeds go over 100KB/s once in a while.
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tomato Torrent is the *****, if only it would dl when I click on a torrent link in browser. Bit on wheels is okay, Azuerues is the best but too slow for my old mac.
- modian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd use BoW in a second if the developer would ever get around to updating it.
- Sp1k3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I use Transmission on my Ubuntu box. It pwnz ;)
- diversionmary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thx for the azureus dashboard widget link, this looks great!
- davidd009, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Transmission is my favorite OS X client, really wished it had RSS support though and would much prefer a OS X port of uTorrent
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to use TT, but since i got my Intel iMac i needed a UB application, so i switched to Transmission.
- dragazis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmm. I wish the the developer of BoW would release his source to developers considering he doesn't work on it anymore. I'm sure if he did someone would pick it up and improve on it. I think it has the best chance to be a uTorrent type of client on OSX.
- jamms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i use transmission. it's by far the fastest torrent downloader i have used on my mac. i have tried to use acquisition many times, but the application just won't work with the torrents. shame, as it's one of my favorite mac apps.
- mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BoW is accepted again, or you could use mainline.
- antini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Check out aria2 (http://aria2.sourceforge.net/) for Unix, its a great low resource command line client.
- mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea, you could do that, or try torrentflux, which is created specifically for this reason.
- vertice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The killer feature for me in azureus is being able to select specific files within a torrent to download instead.
I am also gonna do the azureus widget thing, just as soon as i have a linux box running somewhere again. - TERRANCIO, on 09/09/2008, -0/+0i think you are color blind my friend, isnt the frog Blue?
- ausdigger, on 09/15/2009, -0/+0actually i've noticed many sites banning transmission.
its not that transmission doesnt work with those sites, but if they find u they might ban u.
specially on private trackers. Transmission seems to stuff up the ratio calculations as i understand. - hfdratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried Transmission (pretty but slow) and Bittorrent and settled on Azureus which is very friendly and loyal as a green frog should be. Acquisition, great for P2P has an "open torrent" command that has never opened anything. I tried and trashed Opera as slow and useless overall. Back to Firefox. No torrent but, then, it's a browser. Azureus gets my vote.
Nice article and comparison. Thanks. - badtz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i always end up b ack at the official client. Mostly because the other clients lack global and individual upload throttling on torrents. That's the main thing I look for. Along with a nice interface.
