- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16aucally a good but short list
- rpardee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I've never used gimp, but I really love paint.net for graphics editing:
http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/
I turn my 5 year-old loose with it when I need some time to myself--it's that easy to use. - symmet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"I don't see what is the hype about open-source programs when everyone is riding the free wave off torrents and acquiring quality and I dare say, better (in most cases) close-sourced programs. How ironic. They even mention bit torrent clients."
Some people actually like to get their software legally. And bittorrent doesn't have to be used illegally. - fluoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6BitTorrent isn't used exclusively for piracy, dumbass. It's just a file transfer program. People used to pirate ***** with ftp, but you wouldn't have gotten stupid comments like that for seeing a cool ftp client on a list like this.
- farkninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't believe that uTorrent is open-source. That's the only reason it isn't on there, but I do agree that uTorrent is a better client.
- arzdb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Nothing that I haven't seen before on the list, but certainly very useful for anyone who hasn't seen all of them. I have probably 80% of those installed and am happy with most.
FileZilla is really great except it takes a HELL of a long time to start up for some reason (if it even starts up at all). Still worth the look though. - zouhair, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Short and nice
- mattramos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's already been said, I've seen all of these programs before.
It's still good, though, because some haven't and It'll help them out. Who knows, they may someday join the community and help us out. I always tell my family about programs like this and send them to sites like this. - nlogax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4so you think closed source is better (in most cases), but still not good enough to pay for?
if you don't want to pay for it, then you don't think it's worth the asking price.
but you can always use a free/open source alternative, and contribute in some way, money or other.
and as noted, bittorrent works just as well with legal files. - Chimichanga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Which is a pretty good reason to not be on an OSS list.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I have pretty much every program on that list, or atleast one from every catagory.
- reets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'd say it does, I've used all 3.
- CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thanks for posting this nice list.
eMail your suggestions for improvements to hi@opensourcemac.org - cecil_t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes it is the same guy, I did a whois on both domains.
- Schwecke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Great list of open source applications. It doesn't have any junk or fillers, only the best which I really like. Dugg.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It looks very similar to the RSS interface in thunderbird, so I think it would make more sense to just use thunderbird. Have your email and RSS feeds in 1 application.
- supergwiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would add Programmer's Notepad.
http://www.pnotepad.org/ - djmdave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Heh, I've been looking for a site like this for ages, but I've ended up using all those apps anyway. definitely a good place to start
- LuckyPhil, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Nice list.
Best? Hmmm..... Dunno. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Which.... isn't open source
- michaelbuddy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4It's not opensource, but if you are on Windows, use Artweaver if you want a good photoshop / paintshop competitor. Well done and free.
This list isn't that great. He's missing quite a few good ones, Freemind for starters. Why is this on the front page when there are listible and other sites that blow this list away. - DuckFOO, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Just like this site:
http://www.opensourcemac.org/
Hope it's that same guy. - dilbert, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5It's a shame that Pain.NET uses the .NET framework. I'll give GIMP a try as I'm using Paint Shop Pro and that one is getting bigger (longer start-up time) with every new release.
- ErifNeerg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2uh... alot of that stuff i don't think i would ever use. anything that i would use isn't free/the full version
- drwiii, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Gaim? GAIM? Someone tell these people about Miranda IM.
- MrStylz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm a fan of Paint.NET as well, it's the only thing I use. I don't do anything that would require PS' real advantages. .net is super easy and loads up quickly. It keeps a lot of the functionality that PS has and the menu structure is pretty similar, which makes it nice.
- pedershk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Well.. If I've ever seen an "ad-sense poster site" this is it, but digg for usability. Nice to give away to less computer literate friends and family :)
- sknits4g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love your list, ramsinks
- cazamova, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2if you think this list is to incomplete, try this:
http://osswin.sourceforge.net/
http://tacfug.org/blog/index.cfm?mode=entry&entry=C1205F0E-36D1-E29A-8C7F6B19CDB0060F - cwcheang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Is RSSOwl any good?
- nkthen, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1This is a great list for users and would help distribute such software to more windows desktop
http://www.osdw.org - minitechnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sadly mp3bookhelper hasn't been updated for ages :(
mp3tag is not opensource, but a fine freeware. - akinder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@rigbymatt: "heh, its free"
Gimp is a great tool, I use it moreso than Photoshop, mostly because I'm a terrible designer, and just need to do light work on images. I'm just saying that it's more a PSP killer than on Photoshop's level. I'm not a professional designer though, PS just looks too confusing for people like me. - volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's a pretty 'dee dee dee' thing to say about adding a freeware program to an OSS list.
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ya. Is there a good open source backup software people use?(backing up files from one computer to anoteror a SAN or a FTP server?)
Thanks,
Chipp - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just want to say, Gaim sucks. Nobody like trillian?
- McoreD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thank you! This is the URL I had forgotten (the top one).
- izzyb412, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I use gaim and love it. I am currently using the 2.0 beta 2 which, although buggy, is quite nice.
- giverson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Here you go: http://www.cdburnerxp.se/
CDBurnerXP Pro. - skizatch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Paint.NET starts up really fast, too
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1excellent
- drwiii, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yes, it is open source under the GNU GPL. You must mean it doesn't run under Linux, which it doesn't, because it's a Windows program (doesn't stop anyone from porting it). Which is the purpose of their list. The best of Windows Open Source software. Which Miranda IM is.
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1notepad2
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would add Jedit, Scite, Freemind.
yeah i love editors that support folding. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think Shareaza deserved to be listed
- xtreamzion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0xchat isn't free for windows
- johnnyspade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Haven't we seen this list a dozen times already? The site looks like a Google adword farm to me. Just my .02.
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2oh god I know exactly what you mean. EVERY one of these lists mention gaim and fail to mention Miranda.
I guess downloading and installing a PORT of an app and another PORT of libraries (GTK+) is a lot easier than download and unzipping a native app that's less then one megabyte.
also, miranda is infinitely more configurable than gaim, infinitely - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oooo. 12 apps!
or all.
http://www.ramsinks.com/software.asp - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Your right - they do make it difficult to find the proper download spot for many novice users. Would be nice to have a big button for windows users.
