- schroeder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if someone created a spy/adware program that spread like a virus but was within the legal limitations of the nastiest spy/adware and used it to infect corporate/government systems... would that be illegal?
- 4z4z3l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0spybot is the way to go but come on SpyFerret ? that just doesnt sound right
- tribalsun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice find, thanks. Although it's true Microsoft has been very lax in the past about security the best course of action IMO is to educate the masses. Most people will happily click yes on anything that pops up on their screen without realising what they have just done.
- arcman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy hell, that is one big pile of *****.
- Oriole27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Spyware is a huge huge problem for Windows. Any plans for M$ to do something about this in Vista? Maybe built in anti-spyware would be a great first step.
- _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apparently, there will be built in anti-spyware/virus technology in Vista :)
As for the article, great stuff to know. - soulcages01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's like saying "lets make spam illegal" - its too widespread to control.
- auricomnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no spyware for me MacOSX.

http://SpywareRemovalTools.notlong.com - The_Dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"make it faster than the day you got it..." (the Veloz ad) sounds like false advertising to me.
- suicidal-kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I knew that that veloz thing a fake.
- FyberOptic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Spyware and adware has become as intrusive, disruptive, and damaging as your common virus, with the only difference being the payload of ads. Why it hasn't become illegal yet, I'll never know.
- simX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0List of operating systems so badly made that they are affected not only by spyware, but by fake anti-spyware: Windows.
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 After reading those names does anyone else thinking of some fast talking, slick dude in a bad suit laughing?
- dfgdetreter, on 01/26/2009, -0/+0Nice list of links to avoid! I also find some userful info about spyware at http://www.anti-spywaresreview.com
- Packetpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had no idea there were that many...thanks for the info.
- Fantt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow - this is extremely useful. Next time a noob family member has problems, this will be the place to look for help!
- jon_k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" Most people will happily click yes on anything that pops up on their screen without realising what they have just done."
Well most people should realize that if a dialog opens up the computer wants INPUT and yes isn't always the best answer. Morons like that should be shot. - pussyWagon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been coming to this site for a while - good one.
- browwiw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now, that's what I call a Trojan Horse (in the tactical sense...I don't want some anal retentive geek explaining the difference between spyware and trogans to me...meh).
Dugg. - CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great Digg... thanks
- oldgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Spyware keeps me in business. I still don't like it.
- male73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you very much tunnel for this info. Dugg.
- rrobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice list of links to avoid! Big Digg from me.

Most adware is viral-like in terms of getting rid of it, however. That's mostly what I'm referring to. If you didn't agree to installing it (especially when it installs via an exploit), and/or they don't allow you to fully uninstall it, then it's no better than a virus, and should be considered as such if you ask me. - doctechnical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Although it's true Microsoft has been very lax in the past about security the best course of action IMO is to educate the masses."
From "The Six Dumbest Ideas in Computer Security (http://www.ranum.com/security/computer_security/editorials/dumb/), Number 5: Educating Users.
Doesn't work. Pure and simple. If it did, people wouldn't still be clicking on this crap hoping to get naked pictures of Brittany Spears, would they? Human nature dictates that humans will do stupid things, over and over and over and over again. Therefore the burden on a secure OS is to not LET them do stupid things, or at least not let them do them easily. "User Education", much like teaching a pig to sing, wastes your time and just makes the user mad.
Things will not get noticeably better for Windows users in the forseeable future, for the simple reason that it's not a priority for Microsoft to create a secure operating system (they've already got 90%+ of the market now with their crash-happy virus magnet of an OS, why should they spend money making it more secure?)
Microsoft will, however, spend millions upon millions trying to kill the iPod and take it's market share. That's their priority: ubitquity in all digital media experiences. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While I don't like MS Antispyware myself, I have been installing it on family and friends PC's, because it is actually very easy to use and pretty much fully automatic. It installs with all the protections enabled, so it's easy to setup. I've not seen a false positive yet, which is pretty good considering that I'm installing it for people who I don't want calling me all the time.
I recommend it for non-advanced users. - tj9991, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't use a spyware program advertised in a popup, if they really are anti-spyware, they won't support annoying popups, because they want to make the web better
Or at least I would hope... - houseofgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good site. Dugg.
I'm adding all of the websites that are in this list to my hosts file and giving them IP's of 127.0.0.1. That way, my computer cannot connect to them to download the crap. You can get a very good modified hosts file from the following web site.
www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
I use that hosts file, AVG, Firefox, and MS anti-Spyware. I'm also behind my DSL router/firewall. I have not had a spyware or virus infection in I don't know how long.
I don't care much for Microsoft, but the anti-spyware app is pretty good. - planticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** dog!
What isn't on that list.
1-5 Karls. - PhotoStory, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Does anyone still think referring to Microsoft as M$ is cute or funny? Ok, just checking. Welcome to this decade. Enjoy your stay.
Yes, I love Microsoft.
