- steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -18/+94Ironically this is also the only 10 times that Linux has ever crashed. Ever.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -7/+74Cool, but a few of those aren't crashes per se:
The nintendo one shows a perfectly normal and successful boot, and the time horton's one shows it while booting.
The only clear shot from the airline shows that it was definitely NOT a kernel panic, and was a crash of either X, svgalib, or the company's software.
The subway one doesn't seem to have panicked yet, but one of the warning messages there (could not mount /dev/hda2 as /: no such device) show that something went terribly wrong. - AM088, on 10/12/2007, -5/+49FYI at least a third of them are photos of Linux booting up. The fact that the screen is black with white letters does not mean that the system crashed. It just means the windowing system did not start yet.
#3 - Yes it crashed.
#8, 9, and especially #10 (look what it says for yourself) are in the process of booting. (DS in #9 booted and is waiting for user to login)
Others are too blurry to read.
Marked inaccurate... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+54Linux is capable of surviving being severely crippled. I've screwed around with configuration files in a bad way and still, with everything failing, not mounting, not succeeding to start, I managed to get a login shell and fix it. It's tough as Chuck Norris.
That being said: You almost can't crash Linux in a way that Linux is responsible for it. - mannymix03, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47the DS running linux didnt crash, that is its normal boot and login screen
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+44Apparently the submitter/blogger thinks any time Linux displays text it has crashed:

Particularly the DS Linux...that's how it's _supposed_ to look. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39Well, except for the one that is a kernel panic.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35Yeah, I have DS Linux, and thats all it looks like. Thats not a crash, but what you see when you first boot up DSLinux
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27most of those crashes are simply showing the command line...
i guess to a windows user that looks like a crash... :S - shadstein, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25the subway one looks like possible hardware failure
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Dude....I just checked your Digg profile...
Did someone from Microsoft hire you to join Digg (today, btw) to troll Linux threads? - harlowsmonkeys, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21OK, here's a tip for developers of airline in-flight internet applications for passengers: don't name your application "engine.cram/airsurf". When a passenger sees a computer error involving "engine", they are not likely to take it the right way!
- netcrusher88, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22yeah and the smartphone one isn't even linux...
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20awesome shirt!
- Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26I've had OSX lock up on me a few times while leaving it to a task for hours I currently can't tell weather its a bad memory leak with camino or some other problem. The mouse still moves on the screen but nothing seems to respond and I can't open Activity monitor to see the problem.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Could not mount /dev/hda2 shows misconfiguration. =)
- xturmn8r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I've seen linux repeatedly rebooting at a bar with those touch screen game things they have there to occupy the single - drunken bar goers. I doubt, however, this was the fault of the linux, but rather the rather abused looking gaming machine.
- DeadPain, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20heh, I only saw 1 actual crash in all those images, most of them were Linux booting up.
- REpler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17#7 looks like an NT 4.0 crash.
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Those particular screens were part of the airplane's in-flight entertainment systems. What's really concerning is that some airport navigation systems still use Windows 2000.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Yet another reason why not to bother getting a passport. All this fuss about terrorists and they run win98. . thanks a lot man I feel REAL SAFE.
- theotherme, on 10/12/2007, -13/+24man, i've never seen so many linux geeks get their panties in a twist
- dentarthurdent1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11i took the photo of the tim horton's crash, and for the record, it was a crash. the machine would boot, play 1/2 of the video it was supposed to play and then crash and reboot. which you would have known if the author had credited my photo. which he didn't.
incidentally, if the author is reading this, please credit my photo by at the very least linking to my flickr page where you got it from. thanks! http://www.flickr.com/photos/colinmassicotte/216423873/ - falcon707, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14At least the linux crash screen is a lot more interesting than the Windows blue screen of death...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Nr. 7 is a Windows NT BSOD.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Weird, I always felt that there was a strange, unspoken, unholy alliance between Mac and Linux users
- Crucifix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I was just going to say the same thing. They show an X server crash... wtf does that have to do with Linux? I've crashed X on more OSes than I can count.
The 'extort LD_LIBRARY_PATH' though... that's just classic... - Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Not one kernel panic?
- Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Windows 2000?
I've seen some still running 98. - coxon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Something good about Tim Hortons..They use Linux!
They should send kids to camp to learn linux. I would donate to that. - iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Why does it feel like a Windows fanboy wrote this? ;-P
- VikOlliver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Two of those at least are hardware failures, most are standard boot screens, and one isn't even Linux. Flagged inaccurate.
- lampshade, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13most of these are linux just booting
marked as freaking inaccurate - killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yeah, the one on the airplane was put on digg about 8 months ago. it was a real high res version and you can see that it is the inflight entertainment booting up
- gmallard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6LOL. I see the problem with the one system. The console shows:
extort LD_LIBRARY_PATH=............ - cer0s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5...and if it looks like a woman, and walks like a woman. Oh wait, that's a man!!!
Buried as inaccurate. Just because it looks like a crash doesn't make it a crash. About seven of those images just showed the normal operation of linux booting up. - fatalfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love Tim Hortons
- xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5then read the comments under the story!
- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7No one asked what Tim Hortons was?
I guess were all canadians eh! - Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@mannymix03
Have you used it before, I was thinking of getting a ds lite and putting linux on it and using it for games. Can you still play games with linux on it, and is there a gui and some apps for it? - DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5DUDE I WANT THAT SHIRT
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Linux didn't cause 9/11 - Windows did.
- soccerpmn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hell yea man. Mark this story as inaccurate. If you look at the comments below the article, you find out only one of them is a real, severe crash.
- VaKo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Its just funny that if its windows, its because it sucks more ass than a cheap hooker. If its linux however, then it can be explained, or its nothing major, or somone is lieing, or the gods were angered. Nothing is bullet proof, not even linux, and if Joe Public has been using it, then it will probally crash in ways you've never dreamed possible before.
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I want to know where to buy that shirt too!
- xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5amen. Even though that screen is their (LCD TV that shows in store Tim Hortons ads, pretty redundant if you ask me) booting up, which my brother sees every morning, because he manages the store.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Lame... barely any of them are crashes of the operating system. and some of them are outright nonsense, like the Nintendo DS... it's supposed to look that way, because its under development
must be one of those dumb windows users who dont know the difference but is trying to get revenge on all those poopular blue screen of deaths lists - Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Try Mac fanboy.
- freexe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3About as funny as the pilot joking about the landing gear not working
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3News flash! Cameras nowadays have shutter speeds < 30s, we in fact DO have the technology to take a picture of a computer booting!
Hooray! -
