- mccord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i just use this cool little script, just as effective as personal firewalls:
#!/bin/bash
echo -n Starting firewall.
while true; do
sleep 1
echo -n .
if [ $(($RANDOM%13)) -eq 2 ]; then
break;
fi
done
echo
echo Your system is now secure!
while true; do
sleep $(($RANDOM%53))
echo "Blocked attack from host $(($RANDOM%256)).$(($RANDOM%256)).$(($RANDOM%256)) .$(($RANDOM%255+1)) on port $(($RANDOM%65535+1))!!!"
done

But why would I want to even bother when I can already get a damn good one for free? - gscharf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whoever said Ad-Aware was the best spyware removal tool?
- Batiu-Drami, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3But, its not free.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reported as spam. If it was free, it might be a different story.

no thanks. ill stick with my free zone alarm. - acidronin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@batiu-drami ''But, its not free''
Yes it is free. But you have to go here to get it http://www.download.com/Lavasoft-Personal-Firewall/3640-10435_4-10460860.html?tag=tab_ur
For some reason Lavasoft won't give out free versions of there software on there site but they will on download.com. Oh well Zone Alarm is still better. - riddlebox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha the best spyware removal my ass. You have to run it along with spybot, just to get OKAY results. Webroot is by far the best removal tool. And is worth the money to get it. Spybot by itself is better then ***** ad-aware. I use Ad-aware, and Spybot right now, but eventually will get Webroot because all the warez I get have they keys blocked by Webroot. Surf with Firefox, use AVG, and use Spybot along with Ad-Aware for a 75% efficent defense system. Along maybe zone alarm.
- geeoye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The best anti Spyware tool i know is the Microsoft one. No Diggg
- shreky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am not getting anything from lavasoft since they sold out to spywares company, the same ones their software was supposed to protect us against...no DIGG
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*pay* for a software-based firewall? hah.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Sygate _does_ have a free firewall, I'm using it right now, it's the Personal version."
So am i, but the company got bought out and they are discontinuing sygate personal firewall, so dont expect any updates..... ever. - Nanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Meh-Spybot would make a far more efficient one.
- mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kerio 2.15 +++++
- nytechy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like Sygates free personal firewall. It's extremely easy to configure.
- Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, when is someone going to do something really useful like finding a site that clearly describes how to configure firewalls and hardware DMZs in layman's terms? No firewall is that hot if it's not set up properly.
Boy, THAT page would be digg-worthy! - klinean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just do Google search on 'Sygate 5.6' and you'll see plenty of 'old' versions out there. Symantec swallowed them up, but their firewall is still around. So snag it up while you still can.
I've tested out Tiny Firewall, Symantec, Zone Alarms, and Kerio...and they were just too intrusive for me. I'd give Tiny the nod in this lot...though it'll cost you a few bucks.
I often switch on and off Sygate and Windows native firewall...and I've never had an intrusion problem with either.
Of course, everyone should be behind a NAT router. That's actually the best firewall protection, and the most important. People that plug their computers straight into their modem are just.....dumb ignoramouses!!!! Shame on the ISP's for not telling them better -- I don't get it. - moggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0checking it out now not bad I like it so far
- kc7gr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd hardly say "just released." I got the news about it a little before Christmas 2005.
Because of that, and because it's $30/year, no digg from me. - drycounty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't Kerio used to be free? Anyone know of a good _free_ firewall that is not Linux or Linux-based?
- freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont think this is new - ive seen it as a combo / bundle option on their website for months now
they've had a deal where you get the firewall and pro version of ad-aware client for like $5 off... - oceandead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nytechy wrote: "I like Sygates free personal firewall. It's extremely easy to configure."
I _loved_ Sygate. However, seeing as how they were recently bought by Norton, you might want to start looking for another one, I already switched.
NAT/Router
#1 Windows PC w/ ZoneAlarm (better for outgoing connections than XP's), Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster (can stop _some_ spyware from getting on your machine in the first place).
#2 Ubuntu 5.10 w/ Firestarter
#3 Same as above
I know it's overkill but I'm a tin-foil-hat type, what can I say? ;) - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sunbelt Counter Spy is the best spyware removal app.....20.00 but well worth it....highest detection rate of any spyware app.
- ahoier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old news.
Get Outpost Firewall Pro instead. From what I've read over at phoenixlabs.org, there must have been some deal between Agnitum and Lavasoft, and I guess lavasoft wanted/s to put some of it's anti-spyware features into the firewall. Which is no new thing...ZoneAlarm has this, the antivirus thing, the privacy cleanup, and the kitchen sink.
Firewalls are becoming too bloated. - aoeu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Dlink Router with Firewall and WEP Encryption + Windows Firewall + Microsoft AntiSpyware + AVG Free Edition + Lavasoft AdAware + IF I WANTED 6mo. of Norton with Google Pack = Very damn good."
Haha, that's a good one. And your WEP is definitely the most secure one, the 64 scary bits, am I not right? Yeah, and Windows Firewall has some really good outgoing blocking mechanisms, nothing gets past that too. - biko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice find, I'd love to see some screenshots.
- colin7151, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dose anyone else miss the days of Sygates free firewall ? it seemed like it was the nicest free software firewall out without all the micky mouse features of Zone Alarm
- n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"NAT Router/firewall + Kerio PF (free) + Windows firewall = pretty damn good protection."
no, that = overkill. maybe you need to change you surfing habits. - bullium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"personally thought Webroot Spysweeper took the cake"
I'm going to agree with you jafojsharp. I had a nasty piece of spyware about a month and a half ago, and got it right in the middle of some important school work. I didn't have time to mess with all the reboots and Hijackthis and such. Spybot, MSAntispy and Adaware missed the spyware I had. Payed for a two year subscription to webroot, and killed the spyware on the first shot, no problems since. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, btw, it's a cut down version of Outpost Pro. It is cheaper though and would probably be lighter on system resources, so that sounds good to me :)
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is really old. It's been around for at least a month.
- nick491, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lavasoft has always had a firewall dumbass, I've had it for at least 2 months!
- daonlyfreez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is old...
And it's a rebranded version of Agnitum Outpost, yes:
http://www.agnitum.com/about/partners.php
Agnitum Outpost is btw the best tested firewall in many tests, including the highly respected German Stiftung Warentest:
http://www.stiftung-warentest.de/online/computer_telefon/test/1234812/1234812/1237171.html (German)
http://www.agnitum.com/news/awards.php
I'm not affiliated, but this is the only software I ever payd for ;-), and it's worth every penny (in comparison it's cheap)... - stimpack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This post is an advert. Non free firewall, hmm no thanks. It bad enough my ***** gaming rig needs a firewall (linux doesnt, no ports open), but to pay for one, hahahaha rofl.
- RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"But, its not free."
Why does everything needs to be free these days? - aoeu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
"It is aoeu, I was part of a discussion about this on the outpost beta mailing list. They licensed just some of the outpost bits, mostly just the firewall parts. So you are basically buying just the firewall, no spyware scanning ( outpost 3.0 does this ) or plugin support. I'm not sure it does component protection or anything like that either."
Although Outpost seems to be the best firewall there is ATM, I give it a rating of 5 out of 10. Support blows, spyware scanning is IMO poor, the module itself seems to produce blue screens, it's either the spyware module or the firewall itself. Plenty of threads in the forum, and my machine's crashed plenty of times in the night.
The best part it, that it's component control randomly goes out and blocks programs. No previous 'new DLL' window either. Breaks Firefox and Thunderbird the second you edit its settings (in the firewall -> Options -> Firefox.exe -> and click OK afterwards) and so on.
New component detected? No need to click OK, just let the window stay there, because traffic CAN move until you click Block, very very bad design.
Overall a firewall that seems to be made by teenagers as a summer vacation project.
I wouldn't suggest buying, trialing and cracking would be sufficient, not worth the money. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://digg.com/software/Lavasoft_Personal_Firewall_1.0

- pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kiero crashed when i ran utorrent, or when i tired to enable it while running utorrent. Too bad about sygate.
- d3bruts1d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old news. Lavasoft released this last year. No digg... here is the press release datae Nov 4, 2005. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/news/product/firewall.shtml
- petehenneberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find the SP2 Firewall and my NAT/Router Firewall is more than adequate....
- pigonthewing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sygate _does_ have a free firewall, I'm using it right now, it's the Personal version.
All the people saying things like "unplugging your computer is the best firewall" need to find something better to do with your time. It's true that you won't get hacked if you never go online, and that your car will never crash if you don't take it out of the garage, but these things happen and people need a solution for it. - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://m0n0.ch/wall
