- tabledesk, on 10/12/2007, -14/+42It's called Quicksilver and it does a ***** more:
http://quicksilver.blacktree.com
It's totally changed the way I use computers. - nathanmock, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Very neat!
I love using my computer without having to use the mouse :) - tehvsx, on 10/12/2007, -15/+30"Everyone Digg it, Kevinrose submitted it! Who cares about the article!"
Didn't even notice he submitted it until you said it :p
What's wrong with the site? - GuyHitByTruck, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19I'm not totally impressed by the fact that Kevin is submitting an article. What is impressive, however, is the fact that the article he's submitting is about a Windows program! OMFG!!!
- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19This is what I'm talking about
http://img331.imageshack.us/img331/7484/untitled8rj.jpg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Ironically Launchy's installer asks if you want to install desktop and quicklaunch icons.
- ll350, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I don't know why people are modding down Colibri, it might not work quite as good, but I think it's a vialble alternative:
http://colibri.leetspeak.org/ - iamdw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9can't speak for everyone, but i actually use this program (after needing something similar to LaunchBar on OSX) and didn't just Digg it because Kevin did... these types of apps are extremely time saving and were sorely needed on Windows OS. In my opinion, Lanchy does it best on Windows...
- canadianguy33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9funny, I submitted this yesterday and it only got 3 diggs. Must've been the title.
http://digg.com/software/Cool_Download:_Launchy,_the_lightweight_program_and_doc_launcher - dwight0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8at first i thought it said keystroke logger.
- jhlong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Although, to be fair, wouldn't you have to do that for every program you wanted to launch that way? I think this app (or QuickSilver or Google Desktop) would be easier in that you can just type in any program.
- marcamillion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9If you haven't noticed, there is not much discussion. Just negativity most times. The majority of comments are usually negative.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Technically, Vista already has something just like this.
- RubberbandLN6, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I have been using this for a while and I have to say its great. Really slick and just an awesome way to open programs.
- ant1832, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm an Quicksilver user on my Mac at home, so not having it on my work pc laptop has been driving me insane. I tried approcket which was ok, but this is a lot nicer to look at and it's free.
Good Digg! - blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12I've been looking for something nice/free/fast/reliable like this for Windows ever since I bought my iBook. Thanks!
- edenlover, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5oooooooohhhhhhh my eyes!
- overaction, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4uTorrent doesn't (at least for me) put a .lnk file in the Start Menu directory, and launchy searches for .lnk files in that directory by default. I did something to add other things (like My Documents, My Pictures, uTorrent, and the Run command) to launchy this way:
1. Created a new directory to put other shortcut files in (to not clutter the start menu)
2. Copied all shortcuts that were missing into that folder. I made shortcuts of My Pictures and also My Documents. To do the run shortcut, just drag run from the start menu into your new folder. You can do this with all items in the start menu.
3. Right click on the launchy window and go to Directories, and add the directory where you've placed the shortcuts.
Now you can launch all the things that weren't in launchy by default. - Elsan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Don't forget Katapult for KDE! I don't think it's as polished as Quicksilver(haven't tried it) but it works very well for music, bookmarks and apps!
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it burns!
It's possibly very functional, but it's ugly as sin. - Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4meh, not interested
If I wanted to be stuck in command lines, I'd use Linux.
Cue flame war... now - burnt1ce85, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7well everyone is not blessed with an apple. So we go for second best, Launchy. It's a cool app if you prefer to use the keyboard over the mouse.
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Because this one allows you to more quickly access ANY program that is listed in your Start menu, or anywhere else that you choose. And you Don't have to configure shortcuts beforehand, which would be too cumbersome to create shortcuts for every single item.
Launchy is also faster than using the run command for certain items that you don't remember the executable's name. If you don't remember the exe of Window's syncronize program (mobsync.exe), just type 'sync' and most people are right there. - sl4x0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3nice, i had an old version of this...it was called _DOS_ =P
seriously though, i miss command line interfaces, and this looks really useful. - wiggly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed! I love Find and Run Robot. Useful, low overhead and rock-solid reliable.
I have so many programs installed, it's nearly impossible to find one by browsing through my Start Menu. With Find and Run Robot, I just hit [Pause/Break] and start typing a few characters from the program name.
Just be careful what you put in your Start Menu. I had a junction ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_junction_point ) on my Start Menu pointing to My Documents and F&RR went into orbit trying to index everything. Junction removed (which was probably a good idea anyway) and F&RR has been bulletproof ever since. - JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6digger twit, you've been modded down enough, but would you like to explain to me what was wrong with the link from the digg? it's the OFFICIAL WEBSITE.
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Try again;
That's right click on EVERY shortcut in your start menu and find a key combo for it, you've obviously not tried or used the application. The joy of applications like this, is you can just remember what the program is called, not some obscure Key combo.
I've personally been using Colibri which had promise of options for applications, both running and on launch (ctrl-space foo to launch foobar to open up options select playback style) - munkt0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2quicksilver windows at last.... warning : it looks ***** on windows 2000
- sigUVa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"My eyes! Zee goggles, zay do nussing!"
- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11You can configure Windows to launch almost anything with combiniations that you choose, you don't need an external application
- FooledByRamen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is a really important step for computers, because it's inevitably going to segway to efficient voice commands. it jsut needs a little more widespread use for people to accept the idea that they can almot listerally just tell their computer what to do, instead of navigating thru cumbersome menus. maybe i just love the fact that it's almost like playing a classic sierra adventure game. w00t.
- bloodroot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Approcket is not free. $18
I don't know if it's better, but it's treated me very well. - adamsitting, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is an extension for yahoo widget konfabulator that is supposed to be better, but it never worked for me, and I didn't want the overhead. I love Launchy
- budrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2gmrun is what you want.
http://www.bazon.net/mishoo/gmrun.epl - budrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Strange choice of default keystroke. That's already the "known" access key for window menus.
- forever200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this makes work on my laptop so much better.. I hate laptop mouse pads and this just cut that out of the picture for most stuff.. got my vote good find and I will be digging this
- Tricky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Isn't this exactly like Colibri? And aren't these all based on the exact same Mac equivalent?
Still, they all RULE! I've gotten rid of my desktop. =) - Spazkake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2for us windows customizers this is better looking than anything I've seen (for this function at least)
- NippleNutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Step 6. Alt I
LOL
If they Step 6. Alt "L" instead of Step 6. Alt "i" they will delete their entire path variable. - CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After reading thru, and looking at, all the suggestions in this thread, I chose to install Launchy because it is Open Source. It's slick, intuitive, and looks nice. You can change the HotKey if you want.
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I love Quicksilver, I can't use a computer without it, and it seems Launchy will do the job on Windows.
But does anyone know of any decent keystroke launchers for Linux/GNOME that *aren't* Gnome-launch-box or Deskbar? - Bloekie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's a program which is called Colibri that does the same and works very fine for me!
- ChippyLasticko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Find and run Robot probably blows away most all of the suggestions (above). Its extremely powerful, and you can do your own "scoring system" on directories and types of files (i.e. give .bak files a -500 score so they rarely show up, but give .lnk and .exe files a +200 score so they always hit at the TOP of the list) :
http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/findrun/index.html
Launchy seems to be just a more simplistic (read: less powerful) version of Find and Run Robot. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This program puts PROGRAMS first and foremost. Actually, that's all it does. And it's great.
Maybe Google Desktop will steal the idea and make this functionality at least optional. - TransmitThis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very easy to use. nice and stylish and clean looking also.
Thanks Kevin def a winner when surfing in bed and no where to put the mouse - cyberprashant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a good program but esp for websites I use a Free Windows tray launcher instead called KlikTray - http://www.kliktray.com - launch websites, emails, or applications or copy/paste text
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great. It's like Google desktop search, but a billon times better.
- VirgoanVenom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Step 1. Run Command: sysdm.cpl / Windows Key Pause/Break
Step 2. Control Tab to the Advanced tab.
Step 3. Alt N
Step 4. Alt S
Step 5. P
Step 6. Alt I
Step 7. End
Step 8. Append ";" to the list and add a directory that contains your .bat files.
Seriously, I don't use "icons" on the "desktop", or navigate the start menu. Making a .bat file for something is very easy and doesn't require an additional program. - salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Colibri has the neat, and unfortunately unused "options" feature for programs
- ruimoura, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That's really smart !!! and then you have to memorize hundreds of shortcuts to your favotites programs !!! Very smart indeed !!! Lame ...
