- Plopfish, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Don't you mean "You're an Idiot" .....
- fbriggs, on 10/11/2007, -9/+22i have a joost beta. running in mac os x, it is extremely buggy and unreliable. i have tried several times, but so far, have not been able to watch a single complete video clip without it crashing, or suddenly declaring the program unavailable. its a cool idea, but they have a long way to go, especially on mac.
- squenix1221, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I have joost running on OSX and other than a few bugs, it runs fairly smoothly. I have been able to watch several shows flawlessly. The only reason I have only used it a couple times is simply because the variety and quality of content doesn't match what I can get by just turning on the tv at any given time.
- Cederosa, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13On the other hand I have had no problems running it under Windows XP after I got my ports opened up. It does exactly what's suppose it, it looks great, and has tons of potential. It's still in beta so it's going to have bugs, but if any of you haven't tried it out yet do yourself a favor and find an invite (existing users can invite as many people as they like, so it shouldn't be too hard to track one down).
http://www.joost.com - wounded625, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7A Joost client for the xbox would be cool. That would make XBMC even better.
- dogstylee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7BUT THERE IS NOTHING TO WATCH!!
- JamesSaveker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You can get an invite from this page via an automated script : http://joost.com/presents/gigaom-newteevee/ save you asking / begging people for invites and works straight away.
- iWANTmySNback, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5why doesn't diggnation and revision3 get in joost?
- threepio, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Not only is the software buggy - but why the hell are we locking things out by region? It seems like everything I want to watch is blocked because I live in North America. I'll go back to downloading what I want until such time as I'm not discriminated against based on location.
- mrspin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I agree about the way Joost fights for the Apple Remote. It would be good if they could fix that. Might we see Joost embedded in the AppleTV or something similar?
- hexydes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Unfortunately Joost does not work in Ubuntu Linux, so I am not able to use it there.
- kibblesnbitz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Exactly! I've used Joost twice and both times I ended up just closing it because there is really nothing to watch.
- skitboxkilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I have had Joost running for weeks with only the occasional glitch: Joost forgets where home is, and can't get any video data. Aside from that, it's been pretty smooth since early betas. The only really annoying thing, is that it fights FrontRow for the remote!
- zadadka, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Use the standby button in Joost, then Right-Click-Exit on the system tray icon.
- Swift2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This is surely the Achilles heel of Joost: content. They use peer-to-peer so well in so many of their products -- legal or, now, illegal -- but they can't use it in programming. Therefore, they are looking for a number of commercial programmers to form partnerships with. Rather like a worldwide cable network. I think the backend of the program is very good. The content problem is what they can't solve in the current business environment.
- iarp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I don't know, from what I've seen using Joost, it's just a set amount of things to watch during the day, then once you've been through all the things that don't bore you, you kinda left with nothing. Sling-box is actual TV streamed to a computer anywhere. If you have digital cable, there's usually like what? 700+ channels now? then you're bound to find something.
Like look at Bugeye Music on Joost, that's the exact same things to watch/listen to since i got the invite about a month or two ago.
If I'm missing something, maybe i did miss reading something about them offering live TV and it's just not implemented yet but until then, I'd stick with a slingbox and it's one time payment. - NeoPlatonist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Joost is a good concept but it is drastically lacking in content. I wish the studios would get their heads out of their asses and allow Joost to air some show that aren't strictly 3rd rate.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I have it working just fine on OS X, on a Mac mini I use as a media center. However, I find the content very limited, and I was outraged when I found Joost does regional content - there are some cool looking channels from Europe I cannot get, and likewise people in Europe cannot get National Geographic.
The sense I get is that it's a corporate dogpile, where all the B stations from cable have come to aggregate in hopes that users wlll subscribe to them directly. Yes with things like regional controls, and lack of HD video, I don't see this being anything but a TV ghetto. There's no way I'd pay anything for it - I don't use it now, and I get it for free. Even with more content they are just obviously too beholden to the content owners wishes instead of puttin gthe foot down on a few things (like regional limitations). - mliving, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Joost is no Apple TV or SlingBox killer....
The content is far below what I thought it was going to be. Most of the content is OLD and fringe stuff.
Nothing mainstream, no live streaming, no custom streams, regional lockouts... boy sound an awful lot like cable tv on the internet... duh!
Oh and it's a HUGE MEMORY HOG! Slingbox Player does grind PCs to a near halt while loading or running. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2On windows: Alt+F4.
Mac: AppleKey + Q - dignon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I've been in the Joost beta program for a long time and, honestly, it sucks. Quality is crap, frequent buffering problems, no content worth watching, and THEY INSERT COMMERCIALS. Gawd, Just what I was looking for... a buggier, crappier, version of the television I already have. Podcasting is a much smarter way to get content (better quality, no lag/buffering issues) and if there are ads, its usually limited to one at the beginning or end (not scattered throughout). Joost... I don't get it.
- Cuja, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I love JOOST but I want to try out Bablegum too! Pretty soon there will be a box (from China) that will run the PS3 OS, Wii OS, Joost, GOOGLife, and what ever else they want to throw on it and sell it for 499. Mark my words.
- tenkenaid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Can someone tell me how to exit out of Joost without having to go to the task manager and ending the program? I can't find any place on the screen that will let you exit.
- Rorduruk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1As a platform it has amazing potential. It runs well, does what its supposed to and is very slickly presented, and could run, like the article says on almost anything with net access and a screen.
The content sucks. Some of it looks as good as broadcast TV, some pixelated. What is good is in short supply and once you watch it, that's it for that.
If they can just get the content there the delivery mechanism is ready for it. - ryanspahn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks and to the person below...this is my bedroom.
Yeah do need a new chair, but i like technology over furniture. The TV only cost $800, rather then thousands. - Submerge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It would be cool, but has no live tv. Something would be nice similar to http://channelking.com
- mrspin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The content is even more sparse outside of the USA.
- dpace32, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1if you are still looking for a joost invite check out: http://www.apacsweb.com/blog/?page_id=29
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Cool set up
- CoreBurn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's the button that's shaped like a power button.
- aethyrnaut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I like joost and was watching it in a small window next to my browser when I came across this article. The best thing about it is that I don't have to search for content, I just fire it up and it plays. There's enough content on there to last several days straight at least. It crashes occasionally but it's BETA. The commercials pay the bills, and it's legal. My main problem with the program is its sluggish and often confusing interface. Hope there's tons more content at final release.
- ronin691, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1A dedicated piece of Joost hardware would defeat its purpose - INTERACTIVITY. Will the supposed Joost "set top box" include a remote control QWERTY keyboard? Hiring a big legit CEO from Cisco is a good idea, going head-to-head with TiVo, ComCast /Motorola and AppleTV is suicide.
Buried as Joost FUD and possibly stock price manipulation. - Radscott, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You know, I worked hard to find somebody to give me an invite. Looking at my inbox, I see I received my invite on May 9th. I still haven't opened my account! I keep waiting to hear why I should check out Joost.
- krikoko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1In Joost there is nothing to watch, even better is http://www.lordoftv.com
- kd1s, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If you click once in the black area next to the video, it'll bring up the controls. The control on the bottom has a little interrupted circle with a vertical bar through the upper portion. Click it - Joost then fades out to a little dot and then you're back at your desktop.
Alt-tab works too but Joost player is still running.
You can also double-click in that black area to minimize Joost to a smaller screen. - kd1s, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm running it on an XP SP2 laptop. Works great, has occasional glitching but nothing I can't tolerate. I've invited a ton of friends and they all love it.
The main complaint I have is that certain channels don't update content that frequently, like AXN, Logo, etc. - CoreBurn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why do you need someone else's opinion? If you have an invite, go decide for yourself whether you like it or not.
- cwcentral, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Joost beta runs excellent on my MBP 15" under WLAN.
Incredibly terrible on my SFF AMD semp64 3000+ with Unichrome under hardline LAN. It's all in the graphics card folks. - dragonopolis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0doesn't offer anything different from anybody else, has little content, and is the most unstable beta player I have tested so far.
- DarthTurducken, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Agreed. I think i finally used Alt+Tab.
- iarp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Forgot to add i'm in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, soo if they reduce whats shown outside. Then that just may be why it's not soo good for me.
- mysterychips, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Atlantic Alliance Sci-Fi are showing Lexx. That's good enough for me.
- mrspin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Now that would be cool!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I would like a joost invite, so i can check it out. Sucks they are so hard to find, guess i will never know. I'm sure they plan on charging to use it at somepoint
- splattnik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Seems like awkwardtv has made it work..
http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Joost - Focher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0That place just looks plain sad. Instead of spending a couple thousand on a TV, maybe buy a new chair that doesn't require itself to be covered by a blanket. And also get a place where a living room chair can be put in the ... living room.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Yeah it runs absolutely perfectly on XP for me and has since I started in the beta way back when they opened it up. Sure it's buggy here and there and I'll get a few jitters on a less popular show, but for the most part it's a dream for a guy with no cable connection.
- mrspin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Very cool setup :)
- ryanspahn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Set top boxes and alike are coool , but wouldnt you prefer to be able to surf the net on your TV and watch Joost also?
